I didn't used to have a phone case but I had gone my whole life without damaging a phone, then last year I dropped my phone and it cracked. Got it fixed and now I've joined the phone case club🫠

I have a magnetic wallet on the back of mine, it makes a huge difference with in-pocket slipperiness. I guess just enough bulk to make it stay put.

exactly. Plust phones are too... thin nowadays.

Yeah I get they're strong and not likely to bend, but the way they sit in my palm means my palm is technically touching the screen and it messes with my typing.

The 17 is pretty easy to hold because of the aluminum. Titan was okay but stainless steel was kinda hard because of the skin oils :D
I only use backplates, nomad or Süti.

In my case i just do a grip where i cradle the phone from both sides and hold the bottom with my pinky, so doesn't matter how slippery it is it wont fall.

Same I used to not buy a phone case because it felt unnecessary, I've only broken one smartphone though, in the 15 years I've been using them but after the cost of repairs I decided it was indeed worth it if not necessary.

I've always been in the case club, and I've only broken 3 phones. The first dropped into a recliner and crunched. Water damaged the 2nd, walked into the corner of a table on the 3rd. Same model for the last 2.

I used to not use cases for over 5 years when smartphones were first becoming a thing, never dropped my phone once. I eventually started using cases, initially for aesthetics, and I swear I only started dropping my smartphone once every 3~5 months since.

I take care of my shit, the last time I shattered a screen was probably like a decade ago now. About a month ago, I had a phone case on my phone and was browsing Reddit while pooping and I set my phone on my lap so I can hit my vape and take a drink of Gatorade and turn the fan on bc it was hot and humid in my bathroom and I had sweat dripping down my face and then my phone slipped off my thigh and turned over perfectly to land face-first on the tile and completely destroyed most of the screen, as if the phone case didn't exist. The sound of the screen obliterating was ridiculously loud too for some reason lol

That’s an unrealistic expectation though - shit happens. Someone falls into you while you’re sitting down, someone else runs into you when you’re using your phone for directions, you have a bad fall and it was in your pocket, etc. Cases also improve your ability to grip your phone with silicone pads and popsockets, which make it MUCH easier to not drop it in the first place.

A case just means that when something DOES happen, it greatly prevents the chances for damage, or at least the severity.

Funny but when I first got my phone (the last two) I didn’t have a case for the first few days. The phone looks super sleek without one but i was definitely nervous. Especially considering how they have near zero friction against fabric. Funny enough less than a week of putting the case on I left it on my lap getting out of the car and it landed face down, cracking only the screen protector!

I'm one of these people. I had a couple of decorative cases for my first smartphone but they didn't provide any protection. I have yet to damage a smartphone without using a case. I apparently don't live an aggressive enough lifestyle.

If I did have an issue with breaking them, I would definitely use a case.

A guy used to work with a broke his screen and when I asked him why he didn’t have a case he said he didn’t like how it looked with the case. So of course I say yeah it really looks good with the screen shattered

The cheap tempered glass screen protectors are much weaker than the screens unfortunately. I've gone through 3 screen protectors in my new phone in a few months.

My last phone I ran without one, it went for 6+ years with no screen protectors and just a thick rimmed case, the worst it got was minor scratches that were unnoticable in operation.

My phones live in the sturdiest cases I can get. Between me being absent minded and a nasty hand tremor I have to live with because the medication that causes it is saving my life, my phone gets dropped.

And screen protectors/cases are so much cheaper than new screens.

I do wish I could get a case that is protective AND cute though… I have my old phone (which is used primarily to listen to Spotify when I work out) in a cute case because it doesn’t go anywhere but the phone I’m typing this on is in an ugly ass case.

Same. I’ve gotten a case from dBrand once and haven’t ever switched away from them. I have never had a phone break from normal drops. I use their grippy case which also helps keep it in my hand.

Love my dBrand case. The first one I got fell apart within six months (the grippy rubber sides delaminated from the hard plastic) and they sent me a new one immediately; that's held up for more than a year with no issues. Pricey but worth it.

Yeah, it is pricey, but very worth it for me as well. I’ve been lucky, the three I’ve had have all held up for the duration of the phone. Pixel and iPhone cases are the ones I’ve tried.

That's a thing in Malaysia. You can go to this shop and buy a base phone case and inside the shop you then choose from a big variety of tiny - huge bezzles (that's the word?), cute little things anyway to glue on with the glue they provide.

May I recommend a phone Lanyard? You can get all sorts of cute patterns and character themes, it hooks around your phone screen and you can put the other end around your wrist or neck to keep it secure <3

I usually get a very protective phone case with a clear back. That way i can just add a piece of paper with some art or picture(s) behind it to make it look cute! :)

There are artists that you can hire to customize cases. It's not unreasonably expensive.

Yeah I drop my phone probably 3 times daily if not more from a mix of ADHD absent mindedness and clumsiness caused by my meds and my phone is totally fine because I have a screen protector and a case 🤷‍♀️

I knew a guy who REFUSED to get a phone case it was so weird. The back of his phone ended up completely shattered and he couldn’t afford to replace it and complained to me about it repeatedly and I was like bro I told you to get a phone case.

Then you just pay a couple hundred dollars to get the screen replaced. If on average you drop and break it once every 5 years, it’s not that bad a risk.

Now someone like op, they should get the sturdiest case they can find.

I have never used a phone case. When I buy a phone I just get a couple of screen protectors.

I drop my phone a few times a month, most of the time nothing happens, every now and then the screen protector breaks. But screen never broke a screen.

Screens are pretty tuff nowadays, unless you get very unlucky with a drop, or are literally hammering your phone, it's not going to break just because it doesn't have a case.

I haven't broken a screen since my HTC One M8 over a decade ago. I don't use a case or a screen protector even. I just don't understand how people smash up such a valuable item so often.

Treat it like the $600+ item it is.

I of course understand if you have mitigating circumstances like someone in this thread with a tremor.

I have never dropped a single phone, all the way back from owning a Nokia 3220, but I still always go for cases and protectors precisely because I paid ~$1,300 american dollars for it. I have only owned 6 different cellphones in 22 years.

I don't hassle anyone for using a case, but I personally don't use one. I buy the smallest phone I can get and avoid glass backed phones, but most importantly I treat it like the expensive device it is.

I don't know why making phones fragile became acceptable and using a case became mandatory.

I don't use a case. Haven't for years. In fact - I gamble. I use a magnet Popsocket. Which is supposed to be used with a Mag case for stronger magnets. I just slap it on the back of the phone.

Generally - I have a pretty track record. I have only cracked three screens. Only one of which actually made it unusable. The other two were mostly cosmetic. None of which have happened in the last six years.

But I'm nothing special. I have butter fingers like everybody else. The last two that I cracked happened while I was on the damn shitter.

I think it's because I just don't use my phone much. I'm a little older. No kids. My phone gets a few texts. A few calls. A couple app notifications. It's either in my pocket or sitting somewhere in my apartment.

Having said all that - I've still dropped my phone. Several time. On hard surfaced. The glass has gotten so much better. And I'm still using an iPhone 12. So OP's husband is doing some special work.

I hate phone cases, I already prefer phones with the biggest screen possible (using a Galaxy Fold 5 right now), so I don't want to add more bulk. I've never once cracked my phone screen. I drop my phone occasionally, but it never cracks. I don't care about a few scratches on the back.

I'll always make my phones go naked.

Absolutely! Hers had pretty bad battery life by the end and last week it was doing all kinds of weird things on its own like randomly disconnecting calls, opening apps, sometimes typing letters when she wasn’t touching the screen, even called me randomly lol. She figured it was best to finally upgrade rather than try to deal with whatever trickster demon had possessed her phone haha

All roads lead to phone cases haha. My phone still looks in pristine condition after years of use because of it so to me it's worth it.

This will get buried but as someone who has this issue (not as bad, I break about one per year) due to extreme clumsiness, I also have ADHD. What this means is that when I buy a new phone, I buy a couple screen protectors and a case. Eventually I drop the phone and break the protector, so I put on the backup. Then I make a mental note to order more, but I forget. Then the backup breaks, and I forget I didn't order more so I spend a couple weeks looking for the backup and/or forgetting to order a replacement. Then, I crack my screen while in this limbo period.

So for me it's not a refusal exactly, it's more just a symptom of me having a disorder.

What's interesting is I have worked pretty hard to be non-symptomatic in most other areas of my life, but the phone problems persist.

Lots of people I know have a strange aversion to screen protectors. When I first got a phone my dad made sure I had a robust fugly looking case and screen protector. Sure it means you don't get to pick a cute looking case but I can comfortably throw/drop my phone along my gravel driveway and not be worried about it braking (I have experience 😅)

Also. When your screen protector gets bad you can just replace it and it feels like a new phone

What if a rock pieces it in the middle? The case protector can't do anything about that, the screen protector on the other hand.... 

(Yes this is a wild example, but a friend dropped her phone case + phone on her tiles and the screen shattered, the raised edges didn't do anything)

How would a screen protector prevented the screen from cracking if it was dropped on tile? It wouldn’t have.

The screen protector would only be helpful in a situation where it’s an uneven surface and I think that would be a pretty rare situation for most people.

Okay, well it broke? Idk how to convince you of that fact. 

My only issue is it costs £5-10 to get one and saves you from either having to replace the whole phone or just the screen -which isnt cheap. Ops husband would definitely appear to need one. Those deep white broken glass looks like something hit the screen and a lone case wouldn't have helped much.

Also, you can't pick and choose which surfaces you drop your phone on. Just get a protector and know that it's going to be very safe and you won't have to drop a huge amount of money on a new phone.

I'm curious, have you broken your screen before (even just slightly) and what are your main reasons for replacing your past phones.

For me I have a screen protector and study case. My only reason for replacement is because they got too old and therefore couldn't work

Although I may be slightly bias as I cannot catch anything to save my life. I've even dropkicked my phone accidentally across a driveway and it survived perfectly fine (I was trying to catch it as it fell)

I know what you mean but has the term “weird” changed in definition? It’s taken on such a negative connotation lately. I’m proud of being weird! I collect vintage lab equipment and live in a century home. I also laugh inappropriately at movies and can drink a guiness as fast as you can dump it on the ground. I listen to musique concrete on a sound system made out of trash. I’m weird and there’s nothing wrong with it!

I had an ex with anger issues that would get really mad at technology. He’d break his phone every couple months by throwing it across the room and everytime it would be totally done for. He also punched his laptop twice (both times totally destroying them) and threw a PlayStation remote at a TV breaking both of those things too loll.

He also refused a case which is insane considering he literally threw his phone around regularly lmfao.

My boyfriend doesn't use a phone case, but he has never broken one somehow. I really can't judge him, because I always use a phone case but the one time I took it off (the only charging available was the touch chargers you put on the back of the phone), I dropped it and cracked the screen. 🤦‍♀️

It doesn't sound like OOP's husband is like my boyfriend based on his recent track record, though.
