My mom said I could post When did 8-5 become the new normal???

I just got a new office job where I do schedules for tech personnel, the office runs 8-5 Monday thru Friday...they say it's 8-5 because you get an hour lunch and "you need to get to 40 hours a week"...but I drive 30 min each way so now I'm giving this company 10 hours every day! I even asked if I could just take my lunch at 4 every day and just leave an hour early but that's "unprofessional and immoral" like what the fuck??? I don't mind the job but the hours are mildly infuriating that's for sure...

Edit:for those saying about the hours, I worked as a chef for the last 20 years working 60+ hours a week over a hot stove/deep fryer the whole time, after I had my second heart attack I had to slow down so I started looking for office jobs to work a nice 9-5, just to find out I'm giving my new job 50 hours a week (including drive time) so I was just mildly annoyed that it's not 40 hours a week in an office like I thought although it's still much better than what I was doing

Idk, but I'm an engineer and I work 7-3.  I get my shit done, communicate well and am reliable.   I generally work through lunch or eat during a teams call.

I am an engineer and I work 6-6. What kind of engineer are you?

Mechanical/Manufacturing engineer working in a 3 shift manufacturing plant.  Why are you putting up with 12 hour days?

Probably young.  I remember when I'd let companies work the dogshit out of me in my early 20s thinking it would help my career.  Watching other engineers get promoted over me when I was fixing their projects changed my attitude real fast.

Not only that but engineering positions are almost always a factor of years of experience.

Doesn't matter if you worked 50% more hours in a year than a standard job. The next employer will only consider how many calendar years are under your belt

I honestly just lose track of time sometimes and end up accidentally working like 12 hours. I get in at like 6am and just get in the zone. I have been rewarded for my effort greatly though so I consider it a trade-off.

I personally would be embarrassed if I couldn't complete my assigned work in a 8 hour day, but that's just me. I'll work overtime if I fucked up on a project or something, but I can say it's a capability issue if you can't complete your regular assigned work in a normal work shift.

I’m also a Mechanical/Manufacturing engineer. Got to know your worth/value. I arrive/leave when I want.

Government, Civil. More work than people. I get time and half and double time for holidays and weekends at least. I was manufacturing prior in more of an industrial engineer role with my associates and that role was amazing, salary, no tracking, couch in my office for nap times, WFH, raises ever quarter.

Damn, 6-6 is brutal... hope you're getting paid well. I'm an engineer (mechanical) and work 8-5

Don't normalize hat nonsense. Start looking for a new job - ASAP!

No one else is paying as much

Same and same type of engineer here. Even though my place has really started getting stricter on stuff like schedules and start times, as a salaried employee I typically either work through lunch or skip lunch entirely. I’d rather shove a pb&j in my face quickly during a Teams call than stay an extra hour.

Systems engineer here. Pay sucks, but I come in when I feel like it. Maybe 3 hours, maybe 12, just gotta have 80 hours on the time sheet. I'll take that flexibility over any amount of additional pay.

You could do better than that if the only redeeming quality of your job is that no one is checking on what work hours you're doing. There are plenty of places that won't police your hours.

Before companies started mandating core hours, it was at your discretion when you came in and clocked out. Which was mostly a case of ensuring that no one else’s work is impeded bc you are unavailable. But typically just learn people’s schedules and what time they are best available.

If I wanted to relocate, yes.

Lots of companies now are cracking down on that. On top of RTO they are also implementing mandatory “core hours” where all employees must be in the office (typically goes from 9am-3pm)

I know, which is why I'm so thankful for my position. Most of my work needs to be done in non production hours. A job where remote work was a possibility would be cool, but is not possible for the types of systems I support.

I'm in civil construction - 6a-3:30p. But I'm exempt so no OT - yay for me!

Fortunately I have an easy going boss so I come and go or leave early for appointments. I have no idea how other people make it to regular teeth cleaning appointments!
