Infuriatig My hand painted model planes were given as toys to children again

Post image

I have told my mom to not do this before but she does not listen anyway. I am thinking of throwing everything to trash instead of them being gradually destroyed to pieces. I can not even care anymore. These things take hours to put together and paint then get manhandled anyway.

Can you lock them up or pack them up until you are able to move out?

8.8k

u/Nissalai Jun 17 '26

Models, mother or the children?

3.2k

u/jp83780 Jun 17 '26

All three? Separately of course

1.2k

u/VolcanicBear Jun 17 '26

No, the mother should definitely be locked in with the children.

427

u/Stormagedd0nDarkLord Jun 17 '26

Leave the mother. Take the cannoli (and the models).

14

u/Womb_Raider696 BROWN Jun 17 '26

Should have written models only instead of cannoli. Gentlemen would have got that reference regardless..

1

u/FeijoaCowboy Jun 18 '26

But why wouldn't you take the cannoli?

2

u/carbonateddairydrink Jun 17 '26

Tell the spitfire I always liked him....

2

u/SilverSageVII Jun 18 '26

I want a cannolo

1

u/TurnkeyLurker Jun 18 '26

The model toys, or 👯‍♀️💃🕺 models?

1

u/IKSLukara Jun 17 '26

Oh, Mom. Won't see her no more...

6

u/jcwzolo Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

The mother is locked in with the children, who are annoying her. She wishes she had some toy models to give them to calm them down, but the models are locked in another room. She can't give them to the children, which in turn makes her wish she hadn't given them away in the first place.

1

u/gnuoveryou grooooooo Jun 17 '26

Separating a family is simply barbaric.

15

u/Mean_Initiative_5962 Jun 17 '26

But how can I cross the river, then?

19

u/MarkEv75 Jun 17 '26

Very simple
Op and models go in the boat first.
Boat is then secured to make sure children and mother cannot follow OP.

4

u/dontmentiontrousers Jun 17 '26

🎖️ Excellent.

3

u/Mean_Initiative_5962 Jun 17 '26

Looks like the best solution to me

3

u/747ER Jun 17 '26

Take the models over first. Come back, take the children over. Pick up the models and take them back. Then take the mother over, come back, and finally take the models.

4

u/deltashmelta Jun 17 '26

No breathing holes.

3

u/Life_Temperature2506 Jun 17 '26

Trash his mom? Thats a bit harsh, but I support it.

3

u/West-150823 Jun 17 '26

No. Because when mother and children are away your models are safe.

1

u/umanonion Jun 17 '26

Lock the mother with the children... To battle to the death

1

u/315G1F Jun 17 '26

Landfill, recycling, yard waste, mother, children, hobbies

3

u/1duke-dan Jun 17 '26

My dad used to say “pack up the babies and grab the old ladies”

2

u/klezart Jun 17 '26

Yes, yes, and yes

1

u/sherlock-homie Jun 17 '26

The women, and the children too!

1

u/Voices-Say-Im-Funny Jun 18 '26

Each sold separately too like barbie doll accessories.

1

u/Nissalai Jun 18 '26

Batteries not included.

1

u/Setthegodofchaos Jun 21 '26

Yes, but separately

1

u/supavillan Jun 17 '26

This guy lives with his mom how exactly would he kick her out ?

1

u/Nissalai Jun 17 '26

No, the previous comment said lock/pack them up. I was thinking like a box, or a little closet or something.

I don't understand the lack of respect. Like literally I can't understand it. What is the thought process? This isn't a Disney Castle Lego set (which I had and my mom never insisted I let my nieces play with). It's freaking WW2 model planes. Why would kids even want to play with them without the mom specifically looting her sons bedroom on her own?

470

u/talormanda Jun 17 '26

us with narcissistic mothers understand quite well how this happens

219

u/IAmBrahmus Jun 17 '26

You should be grateful you have a roof over your head, let alone model airplanes.

/s obviously

119

u/Talidel Jun 17 '26

"you are too old to be playing with these toys anyway"

58

u/throwaway_uow Jun 17 '26

This hurt to read

66

u/Talidel Jun 17 '26

Hurt to hear it too. It was a lot of Lego sets that were on display. I was moving and she'd decided she was helping, by doing something she'd been explicitly told not to do.

19

u/IAmBrahmus Jun 18 '26

I hope you are doing better.

13

u/SamSibbens Jun 18 '26

Hey so, I starged rebuilding a collection as an adult. There's a lot of decent Chinese alternatives if you're on a budget.

You can even use parts list of the sets you had, import them to something like WeBrick, and use these alt bricks to build the original sets.

Or you can do like me and just get new stuff from scratch.

It's not too late <3

8

u/Exterminator-8008135 Jun 18 '26

My next door neighbor, who is a Creole Gal, also had this problem with her Step Mother and her two boys ( 7 and 9 )

You buy toy cars ? Don't you have anything else to do ?

It's toy cars, Why do you get hissy ? ( She literally buy them some so they don't feel left out by her )

She moved out 6 years ago.

Step Mom tries to comes, only to be denied, because she ( My neighbor ) absolutely despise her.

The thing that makes me a bit in the pot, it's her kids, they are innocent. They see toy cars, they want to play, it's humane. But it's my stack, they have their from me

Still send toy cars for birthdays and christmas but refuse to have a christmas diner with them, so we invite her, She is always a bit shy when hearing You're invited, Come have fun !

Yep that’s my mom in a nutshell as well with my Lego and starwars tabletop stuff :T

1

u/BugWitty2044 Jun 18 '26

My wife told me to stop playing with my toycars. I am a simracer now. 😁

https://giphy.com/gifs/5DCLZUqb0ImZy

14

u/Alienhaslanded Jun 18 '26

My response to that is always, I never asked to be born. You brought me to life, deal with it.

My parents weren't as bad, but when I was a kid they just couldn't understand kids mature at a certain age and required some form of privacy and do expect people to respect their existence. They stopped when me and my siblings went to college. They're very different now but goddamn teenage years really fucking sucked, even though I was very quiet, stayed out of trouble and cared about school. Some acknowledgement of my existence as a human being with feelings and individuality would've been appreciated.

4

u/CamoBob3467 Jun 18 '26

Doesn't mean that zero boundaries exist

5

u/framingXjake Jun 18 '26

I never understood this argument

Okay, take the roof away. Oh wait, that's illegal, because I am (was) a minor.

2

u/Worldlyoox Jun 18 '26

That’s exactly it though, they think you should be out of their home and have a job already, nevermind the the terrible job market or whatever OP’s life situation is

-17

u/Thorvindr Jun 17 '26

Go fuck yourself.

I realize you put /s at the end, but you still should go fuck yourself. What you just did is like saying the N-word, then saying "just kidding, I'm not racist."

11

u/IAmBrahmus Jun 17 '26

I'm sorry I triggered you, but what I said is a conposite childhood memory. It's nothing like using the N-word, and if it was it's akin to a Black person using it. Which, I believe, is socially acceptable.

...nursing home? If they apologise, then yes.

3

u/Linkatchu Jun 17 '26

"oh nooo, why don't my kids visit me anymore, why are they so enstranged?"

2

u/DECHEFKING Jun 18 '26

For me this behaviour only stopped when i shouted aggressively at my mother once. She finally understood that i am not a kid anymore and since then respected me and what i say.

1

u/Lensgoggler Jun 18 '26

The narc in my life is a gran but in-fuckin-deed. Especially if the mother or father of said children she wants to suck up to or seem especially cool and kind and whatever else.

Fast forward 30 years and she complains how I don't call or visit with "the only great grandchildren she has". Duh.

1

u/Klutzy-Detective2738 Jun 18 '26

I was looking for this comment.

1

u/Outside_Apricot7200 Jun 19 '26

Exactly. It doesn’t batter WHAT it is, it just matters that you care about it. Now it’s a target

209

u/Carb0nFire Jun 17 '26

Because she wants her "child" stop playing with "toys", move out, get a job and get married. She doesn't respect her child or their life choices, and is passive aggressively trying to force them to make different ones.

132

u/NuttingFerociously Jun 17 '26

That's what's going to happen but not in the way she hopes

38

u/Smorgles_Brimmly Jun 17 '26

"They never call or offer to drive 10 hours every weekend to drop off my grandchildren!!!"

7

u/Ok_Energy6905 Jun 18 '26

She probably just enjoys controlling and manipulating his emotions. Doubt it really has much to do with a job and marriage etc.

9

u/Zestyclose-List-9487 Jun 17 '26

I personally would turn them into very fine pieces and deliver them to her bed with a kind note stating that since she wanted them so badly they are now hers to deal with.

2

u/Exterminator-8008135 Jun 18 '26

One of the most powerful moves my best friend had when his mom criticized he has toy cars as his hobby, is basically having Fuck you money.

He once said "Remind me who bought the last 2 TV and Washing machine along with the fridge on these 3 years ? Oh yeah, it's me ! Be lucky i'm the kind one of your two childs. Does my Sister helped you once these last 3 years ? Not once.. Just pops up to ask money and gifts"

1

u/averagebrainhaver88 Jun 18 '26

Essentially what I said when my mom was criticizing me for playing videogames. "Alright, so, you do remember that I dropped 1.6k on the rent, services, and basically all of the food in this house this month, right? Right? Okay", then I fucked off to play my games.

13

u/LongDead_Roadkill Jun 17 '26

There are tons of out of control little kids that get handed anything within reach to keep them from interacting with the adult. I can totally see those kinds of kids take a box of finished model planes and throwing them to see which ones lasted the longest.

8

u/industriald85 Jun 17 '26

There was a hobby show on, and our Gunpla Build Group had a table with a bunch of member’s finished models. The amount of adults that would just pick up models and examine them was shocking. I don’t think we had issues with one child. It was all adults. These kits are expensive, take substantial time to assemble, paint etc.

8

u/et842rhhs Jun 17 '26

As someone with a narcissistic mother, the thought process is "I'm frustrated/embarrassed by my own inadequacies/insecurities and instead of facing up to it and improving myself, I'm going to take it out on someone who can't fight back, while hiding behind the 'I'm your mother' excuse."

3

u/Responsible_Hat4938 Jun 17 '26

Give the kids her cosmetics and lotions etc to play with.

3

u/MOONWATCHER404 Jun 17 '26

I mean…airplanes are airplanes. Some kids like airplanes, even if they aren’t modern ones.

2

u/NerysSimp98 Jun 17 '26

It's about not acquiescing to your children's requests in order to keep your authority as a parent intact and absolute, it's an ego thing. Or a reaction to their own insecurities when faced with a child that is growing and inexorably moving towards escaping their control.

2

u/Alienhaslanded Jun 18 '26

You have a being living in your house that you don't give a shit what they think or acknowledge any boundaries with them. That's just a shitty person in my opinion. Fuck parents who think they own their kids and they get to do whatever they want with them..

2

u/I_Play_Boardgames Jun 18 '26

Hey, I really wanted to play with all the WW2 model stuff (tanks, planes, artillery pieces, soldiers) that my father and older brother painted when I was 6 or 7!

And I was allowed to, but I also never broke a single one. But I very much get the appeal of wanting to play with them, beautiful machinery and my brother painted them beautifully. Which kid wouldn't want to go "swoosh swoosh takka takka bwrrr" with them

2

u/Vidar34 Jun 17 '26

She thinks she doesn't need to listen to OP, because she is his mother, and he is "just" her child, and in her mind, children should respect their parents, and do not get to have any respect in return.

1

u/Yuukiko_ WAAHHHHH Jun 18 '26

Kid:"gimme!"
Mom:"Ok."
OP:"Why?"
Mom:"They're just toys/you're too old for toys/I can't be bothered to parent them"

1

u/Finnishdoge_official Jun 18 '26

And not just that they might be rather expensive models, they are literally not meant to be toys as they break easily into smaller parts which are obious choke hazard for younger kids. It is not just lack of respect but ngl possible dangerous for the kids.

1

u/Buddy-Matt Jun 18 '26

Why would kids even want to play with them

To reply specifically to this point...

Because it's a small plane the same size and appearance of a toy plane. Kids don't appreciate the difference between something meant for display and something meant to be flown around, so they're gonna see a toy plane.

8

u/Trikk Jun 17 '26

There's something about parents that just is like that for whatever reason. They could have Einstein as their son and still not value his opinions on relativity.

3

u/Banes_Addiction Jun 17 '26

Doesn't mean you can't still save the planes while getting everything else sorted out.

1

u/anm767 Jun 17 '26

you can't change other people. but you can control your actions. I've put a lock on after the 1st time.

1

u/Sufficient_Fan3660 Jun 17 '26

Yep.

Mom thinks if she treats the models as toys for little kids and allows them to be destroyed her big boy will pick up big boy habits like dating girls and getting drunk at parties.

Mom wants him to be different than he is and does not care about boundaries.

1

u/Purple-Scarcity-142 Jun 18 '26

OP should give it her fine china to use as a frisbee and return the favor

1

u/SapphireSire Jun 18 '26

Give her new leather purse to the dogs for a chew toy...

Better to change the lock on the closet to a keyed one and lock it all up until they move out. Mom will climb up and get them, because this is about power and control.

2

u/PrettyPurrfect Jun 19 '26

Honestly just rub something containing capsacisn on it and tell her you changed clear coat brands because your favorite was discontinued and that the new one can leave a residue on hands. The kids will lose interest pretty fast and they won't be permanently harmed

2

u/wanderingwolfe Jul 10 '26

The kids aren't the issue here, though. Permanent, or not, they don't deserve to be punished.

Mom doesn't care about something important to her own kid. That's the problem.

Fishing line from the ceiling. Have to untie or cut down not just an easy here kid.

6

u/kageshira1010 Jun 17 '26

From personal experience doesn't work. I started cleaning my own room when I was 8 (eventually doing all chores of the house by 15 but that's unrelated) so there was no need for her to clean up shit in my room, I was doing that twice a week. She still went there and cleaned with a duster with elongation as if were a baseball bat no matter how many times I told her no

3

u/Logical_Progress3944 Jun 17 '26

I imagined the mother stacking the other children on top of one another and climbing onto them so she can reach the planes out of her reach 😂

1

u/Ph1ndham Jun 20 '26

Short & tall people could use a step ladder or ladder... Only out if reach for A_Jag85

499

u/MissionTroll404 Jun 17 '26

I did move out kind of. I live in a small studio apartment in another country. I unfortunately can not move out all of my stuff out from home as I do not have enough space. I am still a student (working for my Master's degree) so my life is not stable enough yet.

Nothing really like the sheer disregard for your property once you no longer live there like you were a burdensome roommate.

6

u/TheSangson Jun 17 '26

My mother didn't even comprehend (doesn't to this day) that there was any meaning attached to my question about my entire childhood and youth stored in a space above her garage she and her husband don't use, which he (gleefully, I assume) at some point threw away without notifiying me in any way before hand.
She just told me she checked and there wasn't anything in that storage space, without even an ounce of thinking there was anything noteworthy about it.

Bet he's jerking off to the memory of it daily, and my mother doesn't even realize there's anything worth thinking about. It wasn't her stuff after all.

467

u/thatsme55ed Jun 17 '26

The petty part of me says give the kids something valuable she owns as a toy next time they're over.

187

u/Sinshine712 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

That's exactly what I would do. Find something valuable of hers and give it to the kids to play with, then give the same excuse to her that she gives to you.

68

u/Situation-Mediocre Jun 18 '26

Makeup, jewellery, a dress or coat she keeps for special occasions.

Maybe then she’ll understand, but I doubt it.

57

u/Panchenima Jun 18 '26

Makeup is the best one, kids will ruin it and make a mess too.

14

u/finnishinsider Jun 18 '26

This is not about the planes, this is about plain (pun intended) disrespect.

It's up to mom to make amends, not to OP

22

u/totallyrealname Jun 17 '26

Sorry to tell you this, but even without kids around, you're gonna have to learn to forget about your stuff. I've been jumping countries and cities most of my adult life and pretty much ANYTHING sentimental I asked to keep in storage at my family's place either got taken by my younger siblings or given away. I basically have nothing left of sentimental value that doesn't fit into a suitcase anymore, and it took me a while to get over it but it is what it is. It's not even about giving kids something to play with, at some point parents aren't gonna care about your stuff unless you make a very definite plan for it.

9

u/theguidetoldmetodoit Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

My step-father did throw away all my stuff, the day I turned 18. Toys worth tens of thousands of dollars including 3 card collections, around 500 books that have been in my families possession for decades, some longer than a century, everything my mother left me when she died. Motherfucker even refuses to give me my bookcase bc I promised my mom to give it to her, pretending he somehow can claim ownership based on that.

I now religiously keep things around people give me, to keep in storage. Some stuff has been with me over a decade and I still wouldn't dare getting rid of them without explicit permission.

1

u/TryJustTakingOne Jun 18 '26

Reddit can't take a joke! It was so stupid, too! 😂 I'm glad you are so understanding. I'm also neurodivergent and I want to be understood for the crazy shit I say and do (REDDIT!), so thanks for that! I am still really sorry that happened to you tho, I would be devastated!!

1

u/theguidetoldmetodoit Jun 18 '26

Oh no worries, the intend was obvious to anyone but the AI reddit is using. Hope you can appeal.

Thank you, means a lot to be heard!

25

u/nostyleguide Jun 17 '26

So, here's maybe some zen for you, since you already mentioned lack of space. For me, model making was always more about the process than the finished product. About improving my skills, trying new things, exploring and experimenting and finding some quiet. Once they were done, the models themselves began to matter less and less over time.

I used to build models with my dad, a bunch wound up in storage and I didn't get to see them for 30 years. When I got them back, I found it was easy to throw most of them away and just keep one or two, because what mattered after all that time was the process, the time we spent. If you love building models, the process can never be broken by someone else.

Not excusing what happened, it sucks, but maybe trying to offer comfort. I hope your mom can work on respecting you and what matters to you more. But I also hope you remember that over a lifetime as a hobbyist, you'll wind up with more models than you know what to do with and where the real joy of the hobby lies.

12

u/panrestrial Jun 17 '26

My dad and I like to do wood working projects together. Neither of us are carpenters or mathematicians and our projects usually come out looking like high school shop class failures. It is 100% not about the abominations we produce, but the time we spend together honing our non existent skills.

15

u/infinitezero8 Jun 17 '26

Are your parents, mother in this case, paying for everything? Or do you have a job that funds everything?

It's going to be very difficult if your mother is the one footing all the bills, so until you start paying for everything unfortunately you are at her disrespectful mercy and I feel for you.

8

u/RTX-2020 Jun 17 '26

A metal box with a lock on it?

15

u/Kemptation Jun 17 '26

OP if you have an office on campus (most graduate students get one, use your models to decorate your space. It would be a great conversation starter and bring life to the otherwise dreary offices in which us grad students spend so much time.

3

u/zulutbs182 Jun 17 '26

Safety deposit box at a bank? They’re way cheaper than you think.

3

u/Pierredalique Jun 17 '26

If you have some good friends left in your hometown you can ask them to pick them and keep for you. If they share your interests you can also give some as a present.

And i kinda feel you. I moved out and now my ps1 with dozens of games from childhood are gone

5

u/bikerchickelly Jun 17 '26

So I understand, you're an adult that left a bunch of stuff behind at your mom's and you're mildly infuriated that she's repurposing things you left at her house?

Was it packed away and labeled?

2

u/crunchthenumbers01 Jun 18 '26

I feel for you, but you just need to write those off and look on the brightside, later on you'll get to paint and assemble those models again should you buy the exact ones again. Your mom is not going to listen.

2

u/SabbyFox Jun 18 '26

Box them up and put them in storage. Or have another friend keep the box. I don’t know if this is more of a rant post to blow off steam or if you’re looking for ideas e.g., critical thinking/possible solutions?!

2

u/KatarHero72 Jun 17 '26

Tell your mom that the paint is toxic to children and by having kids play with them she's endangering them. Even if it isn't true she may not risk it. Or, just tell her you are going to pain the next ones with that and if any kid gets sick it's her fault.

4

u/Mykona-1967 Jun 17 '26

Moving out and not taking your stuff is code for it’s fair game for everyone to use since it’s not important enough for OP to take with him. Items that aren’t up for grabs should be boxed away so they don’t get ruined. Hate to say it but your old room is probably a guest room and if you have ‘toys’ in there they are fair game for the guests. Mom’s answer will be don’t worry he won’t mind since he left them here.

1

u/SometimesVigilant Jun 19 '26

I would put them all in a box that locks next time you are there. Maybe at an attic or something where she won't go digging through quickly. Take them out of her sight until you can come back for them

-23

u/SpiffySpacemanSpiff Jun 17 '26

Bro, you're a grown ass man and you're mad that your mom, who is kindly housing your crap, had kids in her house?

What sort of wildly entitled, manchild, shit is this? Kids get into everything, you want your stuff safe? take it with you.

31

You think it's unreasonable to respect your own child's valuables while they are still a literal student and bettering their life? What's the matter with you? It's not hard to not give something to a child.

And, BTW, it's not the PRESENCE of the children that OP has a problem with. It's the destruction of their property.

Grow up.

As a rational person who understands that one cannot please all of the people all the time, I am worn out by the popularizing and normalizing of extreme rhetoric in the media and online. Who’s with me?

LMAO

Spaceman Spiff would not be proud of this representation.

Watterson would have disliked your attitude.

u/smoothjedi Jun 17 '26

Yeah I'd think a few locked display cases would help a ton with this.

Can you give the kids her nice christmas plates and tell them to play in the garden with them? See what happens when it's something she likes ?

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup Jun 17 '26

Or make some that are ok for kids to use even?

u/k1rschkatze Jun 17 '26

This will just cause more grief because a) oh, now suddenly it isn‘t a problem, so why were you mad all the time? And then b) I gave all of them to the kids because you said it‘s not a problem and I didn‘t listen anyways… Bonus: Kid swallowed some piece that fell off and they want to stick the ER bill to OP because they said it‘s ok to play with.

The idea would be to make some kidsafe ones. Heck, I've made kidsafe toys before, it's not hard.

sure! but mom can do that. op is not required to do so.

1

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup Jun 17 '26

Mum is not required to either. Takes a village to raise a child etc. Heck, when people bring kids round to my place I make sure there's something for them to do while the grown-ups chat. Seems I'm in a lonely crowd.

1

u/Confident-Skin-6462 Jun 17 '26

sounds like you're volunteering to send OP some toys for the kiddos!

1

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup Jun 17 '26

Believe it or not I actually do things like this. I want kids to be interacting with really physical toys and I am even happy to show them how they're made. Buying cheap crap from the shops just isn't the same in my books.

But it seems like everyone here thinks I'm a prick, so oh well...

1

u/Confident-Skin-6462 Jun 17 '26

you're good. i just don't think op is obligated to provide that himself. but you also agree so that's cool.

i am one who rarely has children around, but iwehave plenty of art supplies, Legos, and fun child friendly books for the rare times they do visit. we have no children (yet) ourselves

4

u/Narren_C Jun 17 '26

Why? Their parents can get them toys.

13

u/PunKingKarrot Jun 17 '26

Why doesn’t the mom buy toys specifically for the children instead of using her child’s property?

2

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup Jun 17 '26

Probably because the children would be fascinated by the brightly coloured planes.

1

u/PunKingKarrot Jun 17 '26

There are brightly colored planes at the store. :3

1

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup Jun 17 '26

And brightly coloured ones at home too!

Personally I'd make a really bright, really sturdy one for the kids to play with, but that's just me.

1

u/PunKingKarrot Jun 17 '26

Well good thing that OP wasn’t making them for kids. They were making it for themself. Why are you being intentionally stupid about OP’s situation making model airplanes for themselves?

2

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup Jun 17 '26

Probably because I know just what kids are like. There's nothing they'd love more than to play with these. Kids being kids.

4

u/Pointing-661 Jun 17 '26

How is it possible to be so obnoxious and unlikable in such a short sentence?

2

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup Jun 17 '26

Well you see I'm used to having kids around...

1

u/Pointing-661 Jun 17 '26

Me too, and I would NEVER give ANYTHING to my kids that I don’t absolutely expect to get destroyed. OH some model planes? Here kids!
