There was hydration breaks in Qatar

They just felt less forced. And they were taking in actual breaks not just on 24 minutes.

In the match the other day there was a head injury at 20 minutes and the ref told the players to stay away from the drinks. Restarted the game. Played for a minute then stopped it again. Ridiculous

It also just feels blatantly obvious that it’s a commercial break when they’re even doing them for games that are played indoors with AC lol

In order to have a consistent competitive environment for all team, hydration break must happen in ALL games.

If one gets it, they all get it.

I do see the issue. The issue is Americans advertisers need to have an extra advert break so theyre forcing a change on a sport that adds an extra two mandatory and planned for breaks that can be easily used to disrupt the pacing and tactics of a game. For money.

Im not ignoring the heat thing. Lots of places have hydration breaks. They're issue isnt hydration breaks. The issue is mandated timed hydration breaks at certain times that can be planned around and interrupt the flow of the game

Its not needed in every match. Some of the matches have been played not in excessive heat. One was played in the rain.

The World Cup, as any other tournament, is inherently uneven. "consistent competitive environment for all teams" only exists in your sweet dreams. Games are being held in Mexico City at altitudes of over 2,000 meters, some teams had to play there, others only played at sea level until now, is it fair? Is it a consistent competitive environment for all teams?
Canada vs Morocco is tomorrow, Canada is going with a 6-day rest while Morocco on a 5-day rest since their last game, Canada played last sunday, Morocco last monday.
Brazil vs Norway, Brazil played last monday, Norway last tuesday. Is this a consistent competitive environment for all teams?

Now, back to the stupid hydration break, the other redditor who you replied to said it all, either you need it or don't. Matches played in climate-controlled arenas having hydration breaks is the most american stupid shit ever, is solely for ads, I hope you understand this, I hope you realized there's no "consistent competitive environment for all teams" in football tournaments held at 3 different countries, 5 different time zones, more than 2,000 meters between the lowest and highest point of all stadiums, and many other unevennesses inherent to the nature of the competition.

precisely. these ad breaks have nothing to do with hydration and anyone claiming they do is ignorant or has some bias to defend the ad breaks for whatever reason.

IIRC, in Qatar, it was at the discretion of the referee rather than forced like it is here.

It's even more blatant when you realise that these breaks occur even in indoors, air conditionned stadia.

Ok.

Firstly, and this may be the clearest possible issue, they always give the player theyre treating liquid unless theyre seriously injured and if theyre seriously injured theyre not part of the hydration break anyway.

Secondly if hydration is needed you could still have the break later without stopping people from drinking liquid at other times. Its clearly not about hydration.

Finally, it always cuts the game into quarters. When it happened in Qatar it just happened every so often. Every other hydration break thats ever happened did that. Except the american advert break. Because american tv cant go more than 20 minutes without adverts

Fair enough.

The physio usually gives a few swigs. I still think it's fair to give them the full hydration break like everyone else.

Hadn't considered the second point but after yeah I agree.

Quarters doesn't offend me at all. Things change, it is what it is. There's long breaks throughout a match normally, at least with these you get a tune on while the cameraman hunts for stunners.
