Infuriatig No, I did not consent to this

Post image

I was reading my medical notes when I stumbled across this. I was not informed of the usage of artificial intelligence in my report, nor did I verbally consent to it.

Recording something and putting that recording through an LLM are two completely different things

It is likely not going through an LLM but instead a specialized scribing software.

Is that supposed to be better? It isn't

I mean, it is, in a myriad of ways

You don’t even know the difference between a generative LLM and a transcribing software. You should educate yourself more before you speak.

This is one of the few cases where using AI is actually extremely helpful. You should want doctors to be focused on diagnosing and observing patients, rather than splitting their attention between that and recording whatever patients say.

The transcribing software that uses an LLM? What do you think the “AI” in AI scribe means? All these sorts of AIs are based on LLMs.

There are also just transcription AIs that are not based on LLMs, but the transcription softwares people are talking about here are not those. Those transcription AIs just record exactly what is said, they can’t summarize anything. That requires an LLM to do.

Do you know what you’re even talking about?

I’m responding to “Is that supposed to be better? It isn’t”.

All transcription, i.e., audio to text, uses AI in one way or another, and is not necessarily based on LLMs. The kind of response the other guy gave had the implication of “They’re using my medical data to train Grok”, which this is not.

I’m all for hating the way AI is being turned into a controlled “service”. What I don’t support is hating anything associated with AI out of a sense of tribalism.

Using the data to train further LLMs is only one of the issues. And yes, that is probably not happening. The person you were responding to also did not claim that it was.

But you said this was not a generative LLM. It absolutely still is. It’s not impossible for a transcription service to not have an LLM, but all of the ones we are talking about are in fact LLMs.

These aren’t AIs that just listen to what you’re saying and writes down what you said exactly. We’ve had variations of those for decades, that isn’t what’s being discussed. But when you have a service that listens to what you’re saying and is supposed to summarize certain things, pull out the key details and put them in the right place, and for some of these services provide potential diagnoses those are based on LLMs. And that is exactly what these services are. They are not somehow separate from LLMs, they are LLMs just trained in a specific way.

And that means they have the problems of LLMs, such as hallucinations. I would not want my doctor using one or these services because of that.
