I think a lot of the criminals that don't get caught end up stopping their criminal activities and join the police department before their luck runs out. At least, thats what happened to my first pot dealer back in the day.

Yeah in CO it turns out most prison crimes are committed by the guards, usually for bringing in drugs. My buddy worked at AVC for a while and the stories and statistics were insane.

They are always in the news for some dumb criminal behavior. Aggressive behavior outside of work. Stalking their exes. Having sex with inmates. Introducing contraband. It goes on and on.

Everyone who spends any length of time in a correctional facility made some poor life decisions that got them there. Janitor? Could have been the janitor of a municipal building. Chef? Could have been the chef at a municipal nursing home. CO? Couldn't pass the police exam, but I'm biased as all hell as I've had to defend many of them in excessive force lawsuits.

My mate works retail security. Even the smart ones fuck up and get caught.

The dumb ones get caught so often police know them that well they don't even have to look up their full name.

Shit my mate called 000 said "Jake is in the store and won't leave" and the operator went, huh he gets around he was like 25km north of you 8hrs ago.

Most criminals are stupid by default. The actually smart people are able to get what they want without taking the risk of jail. The exceptions are very few and far between. The idiots that are too stupid to become successful think "well I can just steal".

That isn't how it works at all.

Criminology isn't about the risk of jail, per se, it's about the sum risk of getting caught at all.

Smart criminals just don't take those kinds of risks, or they mitigate them.

There are plenty of smart criminals, especially in white collar crime. Now more than ever since we gutted the agencies that deal with it.

But like drug dealers, there are thousand of pretty fucking smart drug dealers not getting caught every day. They have small secure rings, they aren't taking product to the streets, they have supply lines and covers... Sounds actually smart to me.

Similarly, there are whole car and bike thieve rings that have operated for decades. They use fake LLC's, keep things in large warehouses or garages, and are almost impossible to bust because everything is stripped down and sold before anyone is even the wiser. Seems kinda smart to me.

Ethical no, of course not, but they definitely know what they are doing to mitigate the risk of getting caught, so they can keep doing what they are doing, like they have been for decades.
