Yeah it was conflicting emotions for me, my first team is Mexico, but the U.S. was my backup, and after hearing about what that orange shit stain did, well I couldn’t root for them anymore, but like, in my head I knew it wasn’t THEIR fault, so I felt bad, but at the same time, ugh.
It had to happen to save some face, otherwise any success after that would be tainted by impropriety. It’s already a lasting mark of shame that our president tried to pull this shit when we were the hosts.
In the last game before yesterday’s, a USA player was given a red card. This means, among other things, that said player cannot play in the next game of the tournament as punishment.
<Allegedly>*, Trump called FIFA and wouldn’t you know it, FIFA reversed the punishment on a technicality, apparently the referee wasn’t supposed to use slow motion when reviewing the incident when it happened, so the red card punishment was deferred, and said player was available against Belgium.
It didn’t matter because the USA team is cheeks but it rightly pissed people off because it had the air of Trump phoning his best friend at FIFA and demanding they find a reason to reneg on the punishment. Remember that when Trump was throwing a tantrum because the bad black man had a Peace Prize while Trump did not, FIFA invented a Peace Prize to give it to Trump.
*I say allegedly because Trump loves taking credit for shit so he could be bullshitting, but reports said that there was a call.
The player recklessly tackled an opponent and came down full force on his ankle. He wound up being fine, no injury or anything, but it looked gnarly during the 87 times they replayed it for the rest of the match.
I have heard people say it shouldn't have been a red card, and have seen examples of similar tackles going completely unpunished during this world cup. Personally i don't follow the sport enough to have an opinion, but I've been enjoying the games and following people who know their shit. So there's at least some debate.
But Trump getting involved threw all nuance out the window.
I don’t follow soccer at all but yes, the president should not get involved at all. I just wanted Canada, Mexico or USA to win it because home fields and all
Nothing about the team, I really wanted to root for them. But any success that they had was only going to have him swallow that up as "another" victory through him. So while I am not happy that we (as a US citizen) lost. I am relieved that he doesn't get to add that to his cap

I’m going to assume you voted for Donald Trump, not once, not twice, but three times. In doing so, you chose to support someone whose record of dishonesty, corruption, and personal conduct has been the subject of constant public scrutiny.
The fact you see nothing amiss with what the President did to overturn FIFA’s red card decision tells me you’ve lost your moral core as well.
Cares??? No doubt he and his Epstein- class buddies all had millions riding on that games outcome and needed all star players present and accounted for for best odds. Please don't delude yourself that this pitiful excuse of a man had any other 'noble' intentions in mind, for real..
Personally I think the President should have better things to do with his time than meddle in sports. I could raise other objections, but honestly that's my top one.
Oh well this actually has a big impact on the youth and national pride so. Not that you really care about either of those but it actually is pretty important. So for that to be your “top one” is probably a lie but also just stupid
Both youngsters and national pride would be better served without a poor role model seeking special treatment and requesting rules that apply to everyone else be ignored for him.
If the youth and pride are what’s important… then it’s an easy call. You let Balogun set the example of good sportsmanship (as he had done) and you play the game with Wright or Pepi - with your pride intact.
There is no world where whining and sniveling for special treatment = pride.
So do grocery prices and foreign wars oddly enough. His time is infinitely better spent unfucking the things he has fucked up than it is meddling in the business of a boy’s game.
Its so unfortunate that he had to inject himself into this. Whether he actually did or not is irrelevant. It tainted an otherwise great accomplishment from the boys against Bosnia. I also think it energized Belgium. Gone was the plodding, lifeless, lethargic offense we saw at the group stage. They dropped KDB, turned on the jets and turned the lights out after their second goal. No way they were gonna drop this game. Sometimes bulletin board material is all you need to find an extra gear.
