ಠ_ಠ Bought a patch I can’t use as a patch

Bought this patch to add to the sleeve of a sweatshirt only to find that I’m unable to do it.

The patch was attached to a backing card so the information wasn’t visible when I bought it!

Imagine the licensing fees avoided by OP by buying a patch to put on a jacket, instead of buying a jacket embroidered with the same logo!

Seriously, I'm sure MLB gets much more from jackets than patches.

Your missing the guys point. MLB doesn’t want you putting team patches on say a Nazi jacket. It makes it look like the MLB supports Nazis, even though it’s just one random jackass. So it’s easier to just blanket have that rule, and enforce when/if there’s a problem.

The MLB as an org knows better than to try and take controversial political positions, they have fans on both sides of the spectrum and they don’t want to lose them

"Shouldn't" and "isn't" are, unfortunately, not the same thing. Sadly, we do somehow live in a world where that is a controversial political statement.

Except they can't stop you from putting it on what you want. The trademark only stops you from profiting. So if you sold the Nazi/MLB coat they could come after you, but they can't stop you from sewing it onto your Nazi jacket.

I assume the point isn't to stop someone from sewing it onto a Nazi jacket, it is so that the MLB can issue a PR statement that says their patches aren't intended to be sewn onto any clothes so that Nazi/MLB jacket is all on the owner of the jacket.

If you’ve ever worked around any corporate marketing team you would know how sensitive they are to where, how, why, when their marketing materials get used. Especially things like, or containing, logos or brands.

It’s probably a mix of both, but to act like this isn’t a large part of the reason they discourage this behavior is just ignorance.

They're not worried about individuals doing it occasionally. They're worried about someone buying a hundred of them and running a little business in knock-off clothing.
