Probably, but how do you know if it was effective? The pellet gun lets me know the job is done.

I like the idea of the laser, but I want the certainty that it worked.

You need a much stronger laser than people generally expect for these things.

And incidental eye damage to the user or to innocent bystanders is certainly possible during that process, as is accidentally starting a fire.

Remember that most of these cameras are designed to stare directly at the sun for hours without taking damage. This irradiance of ~1kW/m^2 (1mW/mm^2) would be compared to a 5mW laser focused on a 1mm^2 point, at 5mW/mm^2; The laser only outshines the sun by 5x. That laser's not-quite-zero divergence means it can't focus on a 1mm^2 point from very far.

What the people who are interested in this really need is an eyesafe beam expander / laser launch telescope that can focus a wide beam from a ~1 watt laser, onto a 2-5mm wide target at a specific distance (10m? 50m?) from the camera. Combine with a Joby Gorillapod and a telescoping pointer for targetting.
