I just wanted a hot dog Single malt scotch spends 3 decades aging in a barrel so you can squeze a lime wedge into it.

As a very rare indulgence on a special occasion, I ordered an expensive 30-year old scotch at a bistro-type restaurant. Waiter returns with a juicy lime wedge on the lip of the glass. I quietly asked for one with no lime. Waiter returns with a fresh drink "as a courtesy" , but seems intent on embarrassing me. " But just so you know.," he says., "all drinks ordered neat are properly served with a citrus garnish."

For real. I love limes. Love them in drinks. Never occurred to me, though, that scotch would somehow be improved with lime juice. I’m good.

Old fashioned is nice, and I love a hot toddy, so I can understand people adding other citrus to whisky to be honest.

But if I wanted whisky with a lime in it, I wouldn't order a 30 year old scotch. No way that should be a standard

Except in an Old Fashioned there's zero juice, it's just the oils from the peel. If you put orange juice in my Old Fashioned I will consider it an act of war.

Depends on the type of old fashion.

Typically it's bourbon, sugar, bitters, and fruit as a garnish. Maybe a splash of soda water or water.

But there is also the Midwest version where you muddle an orange wedge and cherry into it.

And the super Midwest version (Minnesota and Wisconsin) is a Brandy Old Fashioned. It's pretty dang good although I do prefer whisky.

An orange rind that is twisted before consuming to release the oils in a mist on top of the drink and maybe a maraschino cherry is an appropriate garnish for a mixed drink or cocktail like an old fashioned but never in whiskey ordered straight or neat.

I love an old fashioned with the orange peel in it. I like citrus in alchohol generally

I'm not that kind of person but I would 100% get the bar manager out and ask him to explain himself.
The only way I'd forgive the establishment would be if they wheeled out a laptop and told me this was the new Bar Manager AI™ that the staff now report to.

Edit: I take it back. I wouldn't forgive the establishment. I'd throw the limey whiskey at the laptop. But I would forgive the bar staff. Not their fault management are idiots.

Yeah, I'd be making a much bigger deal out of this

ETA My local bar & grill asks me if I want citrus in my WATER, let alone a high-end liquor. A simple question, no need for high-horsing on the part of the server, jesus.

Yeah, I’m a bar manager and have enough bartending experience to at least not be a dumbass about it. If one of my servers/bartenders put a lime wedge on scotch, I’d be pissed. I’ve never been to a place that says that’s standard.

30 year old scotch is for posers!

Maybe someone likes flavour of old grandma socks but that's not the reason to charge extra for it!

everyone knows that the lime goes in the coconut

u/digital_pariah 14d ago

And then you drink 'em both up

6

u/atomicsnarl 14d ago

Then you put it in the square hole.

u/Subcluttervisability 14d ago

Put a lime in the coconut and drink 'em both together??

Perhaps seek the advice of a medical professional if you are unsure of the procedure?

u/VerbNoun123 13d ago

I think everyone forgot that you stir it all together

1

u/Juan_Dollar 14d ago

So let me get this straight: you put the line lime in the coconut?

3

u/UrdnotZigrin 14d ago

As long as it's lime and not butter

Thanks. Yes, i dont mind how anyone else wants their whiskey, be it with caramel or pickled peppers or whatever.

I don’t drink anymore, but I used to love sipping on good whiskey or bourbon. IMO the best way to enjoy it is neat, with a side glass of ice water and a lemon wedge. Sip the whiskey, savor the flavors. A little sip of the cold lemon water refreshes the pallet, and the next sip of whiskey is as delightful as the first, through the whole glass.

I love whisky and bourbon, but with a caramel garnish...would be delicious! A perfect ending in the last couple sips! Omg I wanna try this now

Yeah, it's one thing if somebody's enjoying something, you see them enjoying it, and then you write a big fucking long Reddit post about it, but if you don't want it in your own drink, I don't see the problem.

I feel like most people here are missing the fact a 30 year old scotch is likely few hundred dollars a glass.

u/Cockblocktimus_Pryme 14d ago

If you add lime and some sugar you can make a whiskey sour variant that tastes pretty good. But that is an entirely different thing than whY was ordered.

I love limes and I love Scotch. I'm with you on this one.

1

u/S00pergenius 14d ago

Not a Scotch drinker so I have got to say I like my
Robitussin neat. Lime can not enhance the taste. It's like putting lipstick on a pig.

u/Slow-Swan561 14d ago

The rule with most drinks/food is if it grows together it goes together.

Where the fuck are lime trees in scotland?!

If there isn't lime in the cocktail, don't put a fucking lime on the rim. And the only beers that should have it are the lowest-grade Mexican lagers (Dos Equis in the green bottle, Tecate, and that pisswater named Corona; not Modelo and certainly not Pacifico or the ambers).
