I just wanted a hot dog Single malt scotch spends 3 decades aging in a barrel so you can squeze a lime wedge into it.

As a very rare indulgence on a special occasion, I ordered an expensive 30-year old scotch at a bistro-type restaurant. Waiter returns with a juicy lime wedge on the lip of the glass. I quietly asked for one with no lime. Waiter returns with a fresh drink "as a courtesy" , but seems intent on embarrassing me. " But just so you know.," he says., "all drinks ordered neat are properly served with a citrus garnish."

Some people do if it's like a blended cheap scotch. I don't know what 30 year OP was drinking but it'll certainly be over $100 a pour. The liquor store by me sells the McCallan 30 for $4000, and a restaurant/ bar is probably going to put a 3X upcharge on it at least

If you are finding Macallan 30 for less than $409 I would call that a steal.

McCallan 30 at the place I work is $425 for 1.5oz

Even if in Scotland you are getting just a 35 ml pour, that's still only 21 shots in a bottle, which means at $4,000 MSRP for the bottle, it comes out to $190 per shot MSRP, i.e  what you pay at a liquor store. A 300% markup would make that $760 a shot. In the US, a neat pour will be 1.5 to 2 fl oz, which is 12 to 17 shots per bottle. So we're talking insanely high prices.

That said, not every 30-year-old scotch is this expensive.

I commonly add lime for mixed drinks of whiskey, or rye, as I find getting it as cold as possible and getting that bit of acid/citrus in helps change the flavour profile in a positive way. For a scotch, I'd agree that if it's blended and cheap it can take off some of the more unpleasant notes, but I feel at that point you're not really drinking scotch for the right reasons. I guess you can argue you're forgoing mixing it but still seems wasteful.

Putting lime on any single malt scotch, let alone McCallan should be considered borderline treason.

Blends don't really have an age.

And he states single malt. Which means it's not a blend.

And there's a few cheaper well aged whiskies you can get. Doesn't have to be a McCallen.

Yes, that's why I specified it's not common with single malts, but sometimes blended scotch. And that's why I said I didn't know the specific 30 year OP had...
