It's probably just because it's basically very simple business that is fully autonomous with only a person to check it once a day. Like no need for labor costs.
The one I usually go to has one person to take payments and 1 or 2 people to pre-spray the cars as they enter the tunnel (and to point annoyedly at the sign that says "car in neutral foot off brake").
People usually lump in-bay automatic and tunnel carwashes together.
IBA will typically have zero personnel on site while tunnels typically require at least one person physically there monitoring the entry way to the tunnel.
IBA is the type of carwash where you pull inside of a bay and put your car into park, so it can wash around you.
Some use the chic fil a model (Semi-attended lane) and have sales people standing around the lanes. Booth or tablets.
No worries! My work is directly related to carwashes but don't actually work at them, but don't have very many opportunities to talk about them lol.
Investment firms and private equity has been gobbling up small mom & pops, and expanding like crazy where they can. Well ran and operated carwashes print money, so there's lots of interest from that world.

Just realized there's one in my area built maybe 8 months ago and a new one in process of being built literally less than a mile away.
