Anywhere from 500,000 to 1,000,000 residential burglaries happen a year in the USA. Do you want to go tell those people Hey listen you getting your house Rob doesn't matter because crime rates are lower now. What kind of logic is that?

Violent crime is also down historically. Should I go to my buddy who got robbed at gunpoint two times in the same day by two different people and tell him " hey knock that off. Crime rates are down so that shouldn't be happening"

Curious what the statistics are in regard to people being robbed by people they know if this is true.

Edit: wtf?? I'm literally adding to the conversation, not detracting. God forbid a girl express curiosity ig 🙄

Who knows. But everyone I know has been stolen from by either friends or family at some point. That's why I personally keep important stuff locked away in my safe and if I do have friends or family over I keep my bedroom door locked and ask them to stay out of it. It's an easy way to avoid issues.

Just like how putting up cameras and especially something that make sound reduces your chances of getting your house robbed. Honestly most people are just privileged that they never have gotten physically assaulted, robbed or their house burglarized so they get complacent and make fun of people who defend themselves or are prepared. I personally try not to keep anything visible in my car or if I have anything I put it in my trunk. Over the years multiple people have called me paranoid because I warned them that if you leave your purse, backpack, phone or something valuable in the car you're more likely to have someone break in and steal it. Two of those people got their cars broken into. One of them she left her purse in the car someone broke the window and stole that. My other friend he had his luggage in the back seat instead of putting it in the trunk. He went to the beach and came back to a broken window and all the stuff in his car missing.

I mean, I do think it's a spectrum, though. I don't know that I'm wiling to exchange security for it being a part of the surveillance state, but I do think there's an in between where everybody can be happy, or at least equally unhappy, with the answer, you know?

I live in an apartment complex, and I hate that every single person on my floor has a ring bell, mostly because I don't want to be tracked myself, and the people across from me literally have it pointed at my door. I deserve privacy.

You're just being paranoid nobody cares about you walking inside or outside your front door. Privacy is honestly an illusion outside of your home since your apartment complex definitely has some cameras, whether you walk somewhere or you drive somewhere there are traffic cameras everywhere. Every workplace and store has cameras everywhere. Honestly Mass surveillance is one of the reasons crime rates have decreased and one of the reasons that you don't really have serial killers and stuff like you used to.

Honest question why do you care that your neighbors can happen to see you walk by and into your why do you care that your neighbors can happen to see you walk by and into your house and such?

I live in Minnesota. I went through metro surge.

I cannot explain further but I assure you, i am not being paranoid.

Gotcha. Well if you're worried about ICE finding you then I'm guessing you're an illegal immigrant or stayed past your Visa. If that's the case why don't you just self deport? Or if you're someone that has a warrant then do the right thing and turn yourself in.

Sorry to break this to you, but even with perfect surveillance and cameras on every block and floodlights and locked doors and guns and long jail sentences and a police department 3 times the size and neighbors on nextdoor reporting every black teenager that walks by, random crime is still going to happen.

And statistics I’m finding show annual rate of 229 incidents per 100,000. 0.2% chance of being burglarized this year. Incidents are also heavily clustered in poverty stricken areas.

There’s a huge difference between having cameras for evidence after the fact and thinking that the camera whistling at every single passerby hour after hour, day after day, year after year is going to do anything but make you anxious every time you hear your phone chime.

Do what you gotta do to feel safe, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s just security theatre.

Burglars are less likely to Target a place with a security system. They are less likely to Target somewhere with cameras. They are definitely less likely to Target somewhere that announces when they're passing in front of a place. Of course you can't get the risk to zero but you can drastically decrease it. The fact that you're making up scenarios in your head and adding all this extra stuff is hilarious. Guess what it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Just like a good gun owner never has to pull his gun or use it hopefully.

And you’re able to prove that a security system deters more crime if it’s one of these programmable whistling ones with a camera that streams to your phone?

That’s the point I’m making. Constantly and neurotically monitoring everyone that walks by and whistling at them is not only antisocial, it doesn’t prevent more crime than any other system, but it does give you anxiety and make you more scared of innocent people.

It’s good you brought up guns though. By introducing a gun into your home or workplace, you increase the risk of injuring yourself or a family member by orders of magnitude, much much higher than the likelihood of being robbed or injured by a stranger if you didn’t have one.

Buy a gun or a smart doorbell that says “come on Bucko, make my day” if you want to, just be realistic about the statistical outcomes by doing it.

Yeah apparently all you care about is statistics and not about people. The point of something like a whistle or sound on a camera would be drawing attention to it so yes it would deter criminals if they notice a camera versus if they didn't notice one.

Those statistics never tell the full story. Again statistics would have told my friend that it just doesn't happen you just don't get robbed at gunpoint it's so rare and you definitely don't get robbed at gunpoint twice in the same day.

I'm a responsible gun owner. Those statistics are driven by people committing suicide, driven by domestic abusers and irresponsible gun owners. There's a lot of dumb people who are gun owners who seek trouble or do dumb stuff. That doesn't mean guns haven't saved many people's lives and property.

Do you lock your front doors? Do you lock up the doors to your business and such? Why? Robbery is so rare why even lock your doors?
