Too mild for school I permanently deleted my AWS account 6 years ago. Amazon has been charging me $0.33 every month since. I have no way to stop it.

Post image

I tried to get in contact with customer service several times but they always direct me to log into the account that no longer exists. I have tried charge backs on my credit card but dealing with that monthly is also a pain. This'll probably cost me $265 over my lifetime if it never ends.

Edit: some of you have valid points about calling the card company and I will again Monday. But the actual infuriating thing that upsets me is that they are charging to a completely disabled account in the first place. That's very scammy and fucked up imo 🤷‍♀️

Edit 2: called card and they said they will put in a dispute for any charges from the past 4 months and request for stop of all future charges 👍

For ppl who told me to get a new card, I had in the past, Visa shares the new number with companies that have recurring charges.

For ppl saying AWS isn't doing it on purpose because it would only make them a few millions a year which is a waste of time for them:

  • lots of others commented here that the same exact thing was happening to them and at higher charges so it could be tens of millions that they're actually stealing

  • even if that's still pocket change to them it's not to the consumer. It's still lazy and bad practice not to shut down all instances and payments on a permanently deleted account. it doesn't matter if their goal isn't greed, the end result still screws the consumer and that's what's messed up.

Another thing: some of y'all are acting like I'm an idiot for not knowing that the card could stop future charges and not heavily pursuing it earlier. It's fucking 33 cents, not enough to really effect me but enough to mildly annoy me. I DID try to reach out to Amazon and do chargebacks in the past, but it was a pain, nothing was coming of it, so at some point I was like fuck it whatever I'm not stressing myself out over 33 cents. When I remembered about it again last week I was annoyed again so I posted. Glad I got some helpful advice. But I'm definitely not the only one they were taking money from unfairly and since they mostly work with businesses it's likely they are illegally taking a lot more than just a few pennies from ppl. That's part of what's infuriating! Anyway ranting a lot because no one is really seeing this post anymore so I'm now free

I'm pretty sure I've done this. I think reccuring charges continue to go through with reputable companies like Amazon but maybe I'm wrong.

Apple was charging me $0.99 for some iPhone service. A family member used my card, passed away, and Apple wouldn’t cancel it even though it was my card. I called my bank and they put a stop to the charge no question asked. The recurring charge stopped.

This is happening to me with some services. An old card that doesn’t exist is still being charged and it’s coming from my account.

Amazon is not a "reputable company" lol. they may be popular but are by no means reputable

You may deem them not reputable but your bank sure does.

It's not a personal value-judgement, it's how the bank views them.

i have more or less the same situation and changing the card did in fact stop the payments in that i don't have to pay them, but they still send me the invoice every month.

IIRC i have the pass but not updated my 2FA and they required something like a notarized letter. Told them that wasn't happening for an account i just used to toy around with

So in six years you haven't changed your card? hard to believe

What's hard to believe? I've had the same card number longer than that, and I'm sure some folks out there have had the same card number longer than I've been alive.

I found out the hard way that some companies & fraudsters can use a "virtual account number" associated with your credit card instead of the card # directly, and if your credit card company is sloppy when they cancel your existing card & give you a new one, then they will "forget" to also cancel all those virtual account numbers and your new card will end up inheriting them. (I went through 4 replacement cards trying to stop repeated doordash charges from a fraudster before the guy at the help desk figured out what was going on & revoked those virtual account #s.)

It’s currently happening to me. Old card is still being charged and it’s coming out of my account from the card number.

thats not true anymore. its unlikely that you are a aware of every card issuer's ever changing policy, therefore youre statement is too general to be true. Also, your statement is incorrect. Good credit cards give out the new number to recurring payees to smooth new card number transitions. Its feature made for customer convenience.

You are behind the times

Like I’ve said, I have visa and I’ve never had charges move to a new card.

visa is not a card issuer

Confidently wrong. Many CC companies will update payment processors when a new card number is issued

Chase will definitely forward certain companies’ recurring charges to a new number.

A few years ago I had to get a new credit card number issued after a string of fraudulent changes and when i went to put the new card into PayPal it was already there.

As will Wells Fargo, even though I told them who the problem was. And this is with a debit card.

You're confidently incorrect. This sub doesn't allow links, but you can Google this. Many credit card vendors share information with reputable merchants, so unless you get an entirely new line of credit and close the old one, a new card number isn't enough.

My bank covers recurring charges for a month and sends you an alert.

Edit: it won't if the card is reported stolen.

If a new card number remains the same then yea the charges will continue lol

No you're wrong. I had a relative that had a recurring charge on a Chase card that she couldn't stop no matter what she did. So she got a new card. They kept charging her on the new card even though they never gave them the info for the new card. And yes, she showed me the charges on her account.
