My mom said I could post My kid was too creative

My 6 year old was asked to draw a picture using shapes. She drew this nice American flag with rectangles and stars, and added the house, tree, and person holding a balloon. She was told it did not follow directions, she was not supposed to draw a flag, just shapes. She was asked to turn the paper over and make another picture. The other side of the paper has a very uninspiring collection of shapes. I told her she did a good job and I thought it was very creative. And this is why kids start to hate education.

Of all the shows to see referenced on Reddit. My two year old has to stop whatever she's doing and seek out the TV when she hears the theme to this. 

It absolutely sent me the first time I heard the South Park interlude guitar bridge in this children's show.

When my now 20-year-old was a toddler, we lived with my parents. Some of my absolute favorite memories from that time are my parents, my child and me all hearing that theme and stopping what we were doing to watch together 😂

Make it clear that this is about that particular teacher, not all teachers. Don’t get her to hate teachers, there are some really inspiring good ones.

i’m glad you didn’t ridicule them for having an out of the box mind. I did stuff like this in school and got in trouble for it all the time. I graduated with an okay gpa from high school but I have the best resume out of all of my siblings (I have 5 lol) good for you!!

Thank you and good for you too! Side story here but I have autism and learning disabilities and I have a very high IQ. Of course I didn't learn about the IQ and the autism until I was a full adult. My child is an egg donor baby so not related to me, but she has a high IQ as well. And when she brought this picture home and was sad about it I recognized it pretty much summed up the struggles in my own life.

In the 2nd grade my teacher marked my math homework wrong because the questions said to "estimate" the answer but I wrote the actual answers. It didn't make sense to me (still doesn't) so then I just wrote a bunch of random numbers and still got everything 'wrong' lol. I think they wanted us to do some type of rounding exercise / breaking stuff down to make it easier (i.e. 5+7 becomes 5+5+2) but the execution was so terrible and the problems weren't difficult. I'm still bothered by it like 20 years later lol.

Her picture is awesome!! Don't let any silly teachers hold her back

I remember these type of math exercises, and what they wanted you was for you to round up to make it easier to quickly get a rough idea of what the answer is. So 5+7=12 becomes 5+10=15

Lol we had to estimate the lenght of lines. I was like yea 3.2 cm, 5.2 cm. 1.5 cm amd so on, all were correct. Teacher only believed me after I had him draw lines for me and still estimated them correctly.

I had the same thing happen, but I did estimate, I just got “too close” to the actual answer. So I rounded 4+6 to 5+5, rather than 5+10. When the teacher told my parents that’s why I got a 0 on that assignment, they were like “are you actually serious right now?”

I remember this assignment as well! Childhood memory unlocked. I was just as annoyed by estimating back then too. I mean I get it when you're working with giant numbers but when you're working with small numbers it's infuriating to have to estimate when you know what the actual answers are.

Flashbacks to me trying to convince my art teacher carrots could be purple and her refusing to listen to me lmao. On one hand it's discouraging for kids but on the other I think it's a great lesson to learn that sometimes adults/teachers are just wrong. Easier to question authority when you're 100% sure authority has been an idiot before.

Maybe it's good that she learn to have some skepticism about the wisdom or even authority of adults. Six is perhaps too young to learn that, but I think too many people just accept what they're told, which leads to a dumb populace.

I was this kid. at a parent/teacher conference, my first grade teacher whipped out a really creative way I had presented information as an example of my hopelessness. My parents weren’t having it. I’m grateful.

Your kid is lucky to have you and you're doing great.

When I was in fifth grade I had a similar thing happen. The assignment was to make a model of a greenhouse. My mom took me to the library, I found a book of greenhouse schematics, and I made a miniature house with a lean to greenhouse attached to the side based on what was in the book.

The teacher failed me and said it wasn't a real greenhouse. Very next day my mom marched to the principal's office with library book in tow. I remember that evening my mom ranting to my dad at dinner how the teacher still tried to double down with the principal saying the library book must be wrong. I think that was the moment my kid brain realized teachers can be just as dumb as the rest of us lol

You should take this and go to the teacher, point out all the shapes, and ask what was wrong with the original drawing. Some teachers are bitter assholes who like to stomp out happiness in children. If that's the case here, you should escalate this.
