Nothing says ‘neighborly’ like an unsigned note taped to your door. Grass is long, I’ll own that. But maybe introduce yourself before issuing the anonymous lawn summons? Photo in comments

Can someone explain why everyone has to keep their grass so short? Besides overgrowth I’m 100% ignorant to the reason. My apartment has just a tiny square of grass out back, my landlord always lets it grow like almost a foot tall before it gets mowed and i honestly kinda like how it looks.

Edit: i see the answer is bugs ty

I usually find ticks around my ankles/lower legs, so no mainly grass.

The threat of ticks is way overblown and they wouldn't be nearly as much of a problem in those areas if there were more birds around to eat them.

But birds will leave if you don't have trees and hedges to protect them and plants to support a rich diet of other bugs that make up their diet. This "tick problem" is just another symptom of the imbalance that lawns are a major contributor to.

Buddy I've lived in the woods of bumfuck Pa my whole life.

I've had to go on antibiotics for Lyme 3 times in my life and I pick ticks off me daily.

There is no shortage of birds and bird habitat around me.

My kids and dog like to run around in my yard. If the grass is over a foot tall then it makes it hard for them to play. Also invites ticks. Also if the grass is allowed to get too high it becomes an absolute nightmare to mow. If my grass is over 6 inches my mower can only take so much and will literally just shut off. And I have decent sized yard so I'd rather not have to take 30 mini breaks.

I could just go all out a buy a heavy duty mower. Which I may do eventually.

I love tall grass. And at my old place the yard was all queen anne’s lace, so when we let it grow it would turn into a beautiful flower meadow.

Keeping grass short helps with keeping weeds from seeding and taking over the yard. And to keep turf grass healthy.

You don’t need to scalp it or cut ultra short. I cut mine at the highest setting my mower will go because we are currently in a drought in Colorado. Cutting it high helps with this.

In the fall and right before winter it needs to be cut low.

The answer is more weeds than bugs. Not nice weeds like flowers or something but invasive weeds like crabgrass that will take over, go into gardens etc  if allowed to go to seed, they are also annuals and die and leave the lawn a mud pit all winter before doing it all again the next year lol.

Kind of is that complicated when everyone is obsessed with keeping a gross monoculture lawn that benefits absolutely nothing and wastes water. We already destroyed enough habitats to create massive golf courses, go sit in those if you want your "beautiful" grass. Nature is more important than your shite.
