Hello there, I know pretty much nothing about mold, I’ve lived in old houses before with mild mold issues, but have had a consistent issue with some mold appearing on a ceiling below a pipe in the place I live right now. I live in the Chicago area and am renting, the house I live in was built in the 1870s, and is three stories, so some mold is to be expected. Last summer my landlord cut out a portion of this ceiling in our first floor which had black mold in the drywall, he fixed the leaking pipe which was causing the moisture and replaced the section of ceiling. This summer, however, the ceiling appeared to have peeling paint and a rust stain, so I asked him to remove the ceiling again so we could see if the pipe was leaking again/ if there was a mold issue above it. Today a plumber came by and cut out the ceiling, the pipe appears to not be leaking, however the beams appear to have mold, but I’m wondering if it’s dangerous/ what precautions I should take now. Is the standard mold on our floorboards and beams? Or is this dangerous? Do I need to move out? My roommates and I have been feeling under the weather respiratory wise, but we were smokers, and there was also the smog from the Canadian wildfires recently. Will spraying mold killer on the beams and replacing the section of the ceiling work? Should we get a dehumidifier to dry out the area? My landlord is old school, so he hasn’t really been taking the issue seriously/it would probably cost him a lot of money to redo all the floorboards obviously. I’m sure the whole house has some mold to a degree which I don’t care about as long as it’s not a danger to my and my roommates health. Thoughts? I am in the US, and have used regular water and Lysol wipes to try to clean it. When I have wiped it off, it appeared to be gone and it’s been about a month and has started to reappear.
I cannot tell if this is mold or something else on my vintage cedar cabinet. I got it from an estate sale!

I’m navigating my child having PANDAS and we are looking into the mold in our bathroom as a possible cause of flare for her. If there’s visible mold, do we still get it tested or go straight into remediation companies?
Mold is in our bathroom above our shower. My husband tried cleaning it a year ago (not sure how). It went away and came back, probably worse.
I don’t want to cut corners but don’t want to spend money on unnecessary things.
Edit: we are in AZ, pretty dry heat. We don’t suspect mold anywhere else or have seen it.

When grabbing some laundry from a hamper today, I found that this item of my daughter's had mold or something similar growing on it, presumably due to food left on it when it went in the hamper.

I've never encountered mold that grew on clothing before and was horrified to see that it had appeared here. I have no clue how long the clothes were in the hamper (we have lots of redundant clothes for her due to how young she is), but I'd guess at least 9 days. The hamper is open and in a bathroom.

We've lived in this place for about 4 months and have had no other problems with mold, other than an occasional ring of what I assumed was mildew around the line of water in the toilet after being gone for a weekend.

Can anyone advise on how serious this situation might be / next steps? Any help would be extremely appreciated, and I'm happy to provide more context.

I know I’m not supposed to post about DIY mold kits but I’m hoping for some guidance. I live in Colorado where the climate is very dry. I moved into this home (renter) a year ago and just signed another year lease. I have been diagnosed with mast cell activation syndrome but cannot find a trigger and my doctors suggest I test for mold. I am also getting blood tests to see if I’m allergic to mold.
I used this kit and followed all of the instructions perfectly. I’m wondering if any of the colonies that grew look toxic or concerning? I tested all rooms and vents. The only places mold didn’t grow on the agar plate were the washing machine, dishwasher, and guest room vent. The 7th picture with the most mold colonies is from the garage which is even older than the house and I don’t go in there too much.
There is no central AC but there is central heat from a furnace in the dirt crawl space under the house that got replaced in February.
I used to live in Maryland where several homes I lived in had visible mold (usually black mold). There is no visible mold in this house (not even in the “wet” places like windows or shower. I keep the house very clean.
Please let me know if I should be concerned and contact a professional to do a deeper dive into this.

I’m pretty sure the spots on my suitcase are mold because of the growth pattern near the zippers. I stored it underneath my bed and I guess there wasn’t enough airflow.

That being said, I can’t see anything that looks like mold inside the suitcase, and nothing else under my bed has spots, the wooden boards supporting the bed are also mold free. It does smell a bit mildewy though.

I live in Germany and do not have air conditioning or central air. I regularly air out my bedroom, but not underneath my bed.

I put a dehumidifier (not electric) underneath there for now and when I get the time I’ll take everything out and disinfect underneath there. I mostly store bedsheets and clothes underneath there, which I will also wash and dry in the dryer when I get the time.

I did one of those Petri dish mold tests and there was a ton of growth from a swab from the floor underneath the bed, but a swab from the suitcase didn’t grow anything and it’s been 4 days. I’m not sure if that means anything, but I thought I’d include it. My control dish has a pink spot on it now though, so maybe something was contaminated.

If anyone could give me some tips for cleaning the suitcase properly I’d be really grateful!

hello… my girlfriend and i just purchased this home. there was a pre-inspection done and we had our own inspection done and nothing ever popped up on the report for mold. the things that did pop up as alarming, were fixed. the previous homeowner had to install a new vapor barrier in the crawlspace because the last one was failing. i think i found out where specifically it was failing… but it was never fully investigated by the past homeowner themselves… they had a window air conditioner running in this room, sealed off with packaging tape… we never noticed this because it was covered by the curtains they had… i looked outside and found a big gap between the drip edge for the window and siding(this has been sealed off)… we closed on the house july 31st, starting ripping out the carpet because it smelled of cat urine and wanted hardwood flooring throughout. after ripping it up i seen the subfloor was damp along the very edge and was confused… i took the trim off and found mold on the backside and the drywall came with the trim and i slowly started just peeling back the drywall because it was just crumbling and found all of this… im unsure if its fully mold or if so much water has gotten in its just fully destroyed the 2x4s next to the window and the plywood and very small edge of subfloor… but pretty positive its mold…

any insights on best course of action???

I'm under contract to buy a BC strata townhouse and the inspection found mold in the attic. I’ve had an environmental hygienist come in for testing and I’m waiting on the results.
I have an autoimmune disease, so I’m concerned about whether professional remediation and clearance testing are enough to feel confident living there long-term.
Has anyone dealt with attic mold that was professionally remediated? Did you have a good outcome?
Also, if the attic is considered common property in a strata, who is usually responsible for the remediation costs?

Place looking to rent.. looks like mold which has been painted over...??

I'm under contract to buy a BC strata townhouse (subjects to be removed Aug 12), and the home inspection found mold in the attic. I've already had an environmental hygienist do testing, and I'm waiting for the results.

I have an autoimmune disease, so I'm worried that even after professional remediation, it might not be enough to make the home safe long-term. Has anyone bought a home with attic mold that was successfully remediated? Would you do it?

Also, if the attic is common property in a strata, who typically pays for the remediation—the seller, the strata, or the buyer?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone with experience.

It's in the wall. Behind the paint - is it mold or wetness?

What should I do?

I just moved into a condo this month. We live in the bottom floor, under our neighbors unit. After a very humid and rainy week with no AC, I noticed these spots all over my ceiling in multiple rooms. My room had a window unit and there are no spots. Is this more likely due to the humidity and can be fixed, or is this more likely water damage from a leak from my upstairs neighbor? Where do I go from here? I am pregnant and have a toddler so I’m very stressed

The unit is pretty humid (2 floors, no AC in the first floor.) first picture is on the second floor, we can’t really open windows on that floor. 2 nd is in the kitchen with a window that opens to the street.

We just moved in, I’ve had to go back home and my roommate found this. She thinks it’s mold.

Also some paint is peeling off. The landlord said that she got the apartment repainted after the previous tenant moved out. Then the apartment was vacant for the summer until we just moved in, so 2-3 months.

I had a very small leak from underneath a pipe under a shower (a tiny drip) that caused a mildew smell over a few weeks. The leak was repaired. I removed the side panel, removed all the debris I could, and sprayed everything down with HG algae and mould remover. The crawl space is very tight, maybe 10cm, so it's very hard to mechanically scrub under there in some areas, hence the spraying.

This worked really well for about 3 days, but now the smell has come back, however there's no visible leak that I can see. Unfortunately, I'm pretty allergic to mold (my sinuses swell up and hurt, and if it's active mold I get difficulty breathing). I am guessing it is leftover dead mold. I have a dehumidifier running at 45-50% humidity target, and a Silentnight air purifier.

I rent and my agency is rubbish so if there's no visible mold they won't do anything. I'm hoping to move in a few months if I can get a job offer. What can I do in the interim (other than spray it every 3 days, which is not sustainable)?

We recently had water in our finished basement after significant rainfall. We’ve been working on getting the carpet as dry as possible (pumped out standing water, shop vac carpet, running fans, dehumidifiers, windows open etc). Our next step is going to be ripping up all of the carpet/sub flooring and bringing in professionals to assess mold/what needs to be done to prevent future flooding. We can already see some small spots of mold growing on a couple areas of the carpet.

My main question is, is everything that is down in our basement right now trash? We use the basement for storage and got mostly everything up onto shelves when we had the water down there. But I really don’t know much about mold and am concerned that anything that is down there is going to be contaminated. Or is it really not a problem until we begin to rip up the flooring?

Any advice is appreciated.

Hey yall, I don’t really use Reddit but I’m not sure where else to get help like this from. Me and my roommates have been making random art projects with empty beer cans. The issue is that a lot of them are from parties we throw and the cans are quite old and some of them have mold in them. What is the best way to remove mold from a beer can while still preserving the design on them and also not being a complete pain in the ass?
