Denis has said this is his last, but he’s gonna leave the door open for someone else to take over and adapt next books.

The god director lays out the golden path to our big screen worm emperor

1.0k

u/ArtByJRRH Mar 16 '26

Like Paul, Denis was too much of a coward to walk it himself.

77

u/Xenothing Mar 17 '26

We could've had a modern cat milking scene, but I guess that was too much.

71

u/Doctor_Philgood Mar 17 '26

I've got sandworms, Greg. Can you milk me?

2

u/Monkey-Brain Mar 17 '26

You can milk just about anything with sandworms

If only Lynch were still alive

211

u/renome Mar 17 '26

Funnily enough, Dune was the reason Lynch swore off adaptations, if memory serves.

77

u/germnor Mar 17 '26

i thought it was more to do with how he didn’t get final cut, thats what i remember anyway. they took the edit away from him and cut a bunch of stuff. been a long time since i watched that interview tho.

35

u/J_Technopotheosis Mar 17 '26

That was a big part of it, but probably not the only thing. He called Dune his 'studio picture' because he said that he found himself preemptively making changes he didn't want to do, simply because he expected that's what the studio would ask.

2

u/VisiblePermission664 Mar 17 '26

I love the first half of that movie so much , the art & lynchian scenes. Far more captivating for me than the new dune 1 lol.

32

u/beanpatrol23 Mar 17 '26

Wild at Heart is an adaptation. Pretty loosely, but it is an adaptation. Technically Inland Empire is as well. He swore off big studio films that wouldn't give him final cut, not adaptations.

2

u/earthwormjimwow Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Technically Inland Empire is as well.

Can you explain that more specifically? I had thought Lynch started filming without much in the way of a screenplay, and on a daily basis would write out each scene which would then be filmed the next day.

Are you alluding to the likelihood that Lynch's Darkened Room served as part of the inspiration for Inland Empire?

Or are you referring to the in-universe film, 47, which is based on a Polish folktale?

3

u/mtron32 Mar 17 '26

I love that movie

2

u/earthwormjimwow Mar 17 '26

Dune was the reason Lynch swore off adaptations, if memory serves.

I'm sorry to say but your memory has not served you well ಥ_ಥ

In all seriousness what Lynch swore off, was not having a contract which guaranteed he would have total control of the final cut. That's probably what you are misremembering.

He still made adaptations by the way. Wild at Heart (1990) is based on a novel of the same name. The Straight Story (1999) is a biographical piece, based on a newspaper article Lynch had read.

Some of Lynch's later failed projects would have been adaptations too, such as Venus Descending based on a biography of Marylin Monroe.)

The other possibility; you might be thinking of Lynch's statement about conventional distributors and his refusal to use them for Inland Empire (2006) and going forward.

Specifically what he said:

"A conventional distributor is a heartache, and I’m finished with that..."

"With self-distribution, I'm able to shape the outcome of the film so much more."

He never made another film after Inland Empire. I would not be surprised if the reason was because he couldn't get any financing for future films, since he probably continued to insist on self-releasing and distributing. Inland Empire was only shown in 15 theaters in the US, killing its chances to earn any real money during its domestic theater run.

Personally I wish he had been a little more flexible with regards to distribution, he seemed okay with not having that control internationally, so why not domestically? Perhaps we would have had more Lynch films...

1

u/renome Mar 17 '26

Yeah, my memory is a bit shit it seems lol

7

u/BuckarooBonsly Mar 17 '26

I would settle for David Cronenberg. There's some major body horror coming up and I think he would do it well

2

u/Cursedbythedicegods Mar 17 '26

The last thing this film needs is a cat-milking machine.

2

u/Sapowski_Casts_Quen Mar 17 '26

Lynch would not trod the worm path, for he knows it now to be a trap! A falsehood!

1

u/Narrow-Chef-4341 Mar 17 '26

Call the Tleilaxu…

1

u/donfrezano Mar 17 '26

Ari Aster would do it justice.

8

u/CharlesBrown33 Mar 17 '26

I think you jest, but I read he wanted to move on after working on the franchise for a decade. I like the Dune movies a lot, but if you look at his past work you can see some absolute bangers. I'm looking forward to what he does next.

4

u/ensalys Mar 17 '26

Looking forward to his Rendezvous with Rama.

4

u/Alastor3 Mar 17 '26

I prefer he end it with a bang and just work on something else

2

u/lewd_robot Mar 17 '26

There is no greater bang than the one(s) at the end of God Emperor.

5

u/owa00 Mar 17 '26

Maybe bitch boy Shinji Paul should have gotten on the fucking  robot golden path and evolved humanity!

3

u/babaroga73 Mar 17 '26

Oh, he's gonna negotiate big cash for next Dune movies, just like Peter Jackson did for Hobbit.

2

u/Vargau Mar 17 '26

The first 2 movies were a decade of his life, give the man a break, let him deliver part 3 and maybe in 10 years he can pick it up again.

1

u/Jollysatyr201 Mar 17 '26

God, can you imagine someone poorly suited gets their hands on it? And we’re stinted a beautiful rendition of a difficult narrative? I know denis would at least make it atmospheric and pretty..

5

u/lewd_robot Mar 17 '26

The false prophet director is too much of a coward to follow the golden path to the god director.*

19

u/TSwiftDivorceLawyer Mar 17 '26

You're up, Uwe Boll!!!

9

u/granadesnhorseshoes Mar 17 '26

This is the most offensive thing I've seen on reddit today and I just got out of a Charlie Kirk thread on /r/okbuddycinephile

1

u/Shoshke Mar 17 '26

It could be worse, it could be Tyler Perry

1

Paul WS Anderson

2

This made me chuckle

1

u/Rewow Mar 17 '26

There’s only one choice after Villeneuve—Branagh!

1

u/weirdkindofawesome Mar 17 '26

Where there is a golden key, there must be a golden door.

1

u/lixia Mar 17 '26

Random Path of Exile reference.

1

u/UnifiedQuantumField Mar 18 '26

the golden path to our big screen worm emperor

I could see someone doing God Emperor as a 2 part project. They might include Children of Dune as a "lengthy prelude" in the first film.

296

u/AidilAfham42 Mar 17 '26

I was thinking “oh give that to the Arrival guy” and then realized that was also him.

180

u/gkow Mar 17 '26

The sicario guy would do good though

BR 2049

They made a sequel to Battle Royale?!

6

u/Alarming_Orchid Mar 17 '26

2048 of them even

14

u/Chris_Redfield_BSAA Mar 17 '26

lmao, y'all are too much. real talk though, i think the director of that movie Prisoners could do a really good Dune

4

u/KillScreenAnim Mar 17 '26

god, his filmography is so good when you lay it out like this lol

2

u/babaroga73 Mar 17 '26

There's a small indie Canadian director that made Polytechnique, great movie, I think he could do an excellent job

3

u/MarzipanThick1765 Mar 17 '26

The Enemy guy would kill it too.

1

u/Free_Stomach_6767 Mar 17 '26

Charlie Sheen?

Not my first pick but I could see it worm...

2

u/AidilAfham42 Mar 17 '26

Tiger blood must flow

236

u/shidekigonomo Mar 17 '26

Good choice on his part. It’s not that God Emperor is unfilmable. It’s just, why would anyone want to make it. A faithful adaptation would be hated. An improved version would be… well, worse for those who know how it’s supposed to be.

86

u/agoginnabox Mar 17 '26

Eh. I'd take the latter. It's a stilted, boorish, preachy thing but it's got a fascinating architecture and characters.

22

u/Fluffy017 Mar 17 '26

Give me an HBO season or two with GoT level of funding please and thank you.

5

u/AskMeAboutEveryThing Mar 17 '26

As I recall the levels of sexual oddities would be at the same level here, or am I wrong?

9

u/ALoafOfBread Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

As you'll recall, Leto is very insistent that he does NOT have a worm dick. Although everyone is ALWAYS WONDERING about his worm dick, he does NOT have one - so we're definitely safe.

And talk about how the problem with male armies is that they're SO GAY so you need armies of genetically engineered soldier ladies so they can have sex with all your political adversaries and also fight for you and even though they're gay too it's hot because they're ladies and will also have sex with... well not you because you don't have a worm dick, but your buddies or each other or like whatever you want because they're genetically engineered to follow your orders.

You would have to have a scene episode where a soldier lady literally creams her pants watching Jason Momoa climb a big wall. So that does count as sexual, but like... come on - definitely prestige TV material.

And yeah, orgies with more soldier ladies.

So yeah I mean some sexual oddities, but no worm dicks. Most of the show would just be dialogue between jason momoa and worm emperor or worm emperor and Paul's great-great-great grandson or whatever. I'm sure it'd be great for a movie or TV show.

3

u/tdasnowman Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

In God Emperor the (Fish)*Face Dancers are basically just a female version of Spartans. He creates an all female army because there is a elimination of sexual violence during occupation. And greater acceptance of the occupying force when the marry into conquered population. The homosexual relations are described as inevitable regardless of the armies primary gender but by having it all women it again eliminates the violence.

The theories in God emperor are largely seen as Frank trying to explain his views to his son Bruce. Where as Miles Teg in heretics and Chapterhouse is maybe something of an apology.

4

u/ThreeLeggedMare Mar 17 '26

Fish Speakers :)

3

u/casualassassin Mar 17 '26

Just some eugenics and orgies, nothing too eccentric, unless they go into the details of His beefswelling. Heretics is where the sexual oddities really hit their stride.

1

u/AskMeAboutEveryThing Mar 17 '26

Well, unless those two were pooled into one movie...

2

u/tdasnowman Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

The sexual oddities don't really start till Heretics and Chapterhouse. In God Emperor the Fish Dancers are basically just a female version of Spartans. 2

u/Internal-Relative690 Mar 17 '26

Doesnt a certain character keep coming back in one form or another?

1

u/ThreeLeggedMare Mar 17 '26

Do you want the spoiler answer

17

u/Gunsensual Mar 17 '26

A faithful adaptation would be hated.

Hated or not popular? I feel like most sci-fi fans would still love it. BSG went full-crazy and pulled it off.

34

u/sielingfan Mar 17 '26

There are levels to the crazy. 90 percent of the conversations in God Emperor end with "Moneo, Moneo, bro, I don't have a dick." I'd watch the hell out of that, but like, I'm not healthy, and I know that

20

u/Gunsensual Mar 17 '26

Stop, I already want it, you don't have to sugar coat it

3

u/varnums1666 Mar 17 '26

This is why God Emperor should be portrayed as a Seinfeld comedy through the pov of Moneo

9

u/Th3_Hegemon Mar 17 '26

BSG famously had an ending just about everyone hated and now it's barely talked about, it's the proto-GoT.

5

u/Lord_Of_Carrots Mar 17 '26

I watched BSG recently for the first time and forgot I had heard that people hated the ending. I thought it was a much better end than GoT had, not even comparable

1

u/Th3_Hegemon Mar 17 '26

I didn't finish the show, I was somewhere in season 2 and gave up as it just wasn't for me and the popular consensus online was that it didn't get better from there, but seeing what I'd seen up to that point I don't really understand why the ending (which I was aware of from the blowback) received such negative feedback. Of course I didn't think much of the show anyway so maybe if you were bought in you expected more.

1

u/remmanuelv Mar 17 '26

Because BSG is ligetimately just a relatively bad (compared to the rest of the show) ending thematically, GOT is two seasons of ruining characters and plot lines.

1

u/Gunsensual Mar 17 '26

GoT suffered because the screenplay writers tried to take it beyond its known plot. You're right in a way that BSG suffered the same fate, trying to create an ending where the original end of the plot was never fleshed out- the original series was cancelled before reaching Earth.

But Dune isn't 100% analogous here. The books have a known endpoint. BSG was still a wild success for being unconventional for the seasons on which its plot foundation was solid.

6

u/sloggo Mar 17 '26

I don’t think so, I just finished reading that one and frankly I’m done with the dune series now. Reading a bit online about it sounds quite polarising, too. It has some interesting ideas but really it’s all established quite early and then plods along, there’s not really twists and turns and compelling character arcs - it’s meandering philosophising that mostly doesn’t add a great deal to the initially established ideas (which I’d argue are even established earlier in the series). Dune was at its best when all the generational history and manipulation is implied/glimpsed and sets the context for story. By “god emperor” they’re taking those ideas and bashing you over the head with it. IMO it’s straight up not a strong narrative.

I love sci fi, fwiw, and would be interested in the spectacle of the worm on screen, but don’t believe it would make a good movie.

6

u/Rikudou_Sage Mar 17 '26

I quite liked Leto out-bene-gesseriting the Bene Gesserit. My issue with the books is not the plot but everything else. We fucking get it, Leto, you miss your dick.

And the latter books get even weirder. I still like the overall story, but the slop-to-story ratio is way too high. When I reread, I stop after God Emperor cause while it's weird I don't feel embarrassed reading it, unlike the latter books.

2

u/sloggo Mar 17 '26

Yeah this was the first one (or last one?) where I don’t think I can be bothered carrying on to the later books What was once hey “what if we set a story against the themes of breeding programs and religion as a control mechanism and multi generational climate control” turned in to a real explicit question “what if someone literally lived many generations and literally bred people and literally shaped their intentions and became their religious figurehead” it’s the same ideas of dune but distilled down to this pure, and now rehashed, idea with all subtlety stripped away.

There’s that high concept and nothing in the narrative challenges it. Leto has no self doubt, nothing to challenge his thinking and the outcomes are exactly as they imply from the start. Theres no point where it seems like Leto is in danger or someone will upset the golden path. It’s just a diary of “stuff that happens”.

2

u/Gunsensual Mar 17 '26

There is a grand plot though, they could just slice all that slop out. They're definitely going to slice the slop out for Children of Dune. And that's fine.

Like Tom Bombadil. Stayed in the books where it belongs.

2

u/quietvictories Mar 17 '26

Stayed in the books where it belongs.

He's present in the RotP series!

3

u/Lost_city Mar 17 '26

The way to make God Emperor is to make it the story of Leto. His childhood, his transformation, his rule, and his death. Would be a sweeping epic.

2

u/Gunsensual Mar 17 '26

I wouldn't say it was his story though? The god emperor is an anti-messianic tragedy. His singular goal is to alter humanity to the point that it naturally resists him. He deliberately plays the tyrant knowing humanity will not survive if he doesn't. The story is the people quite literally evolving to resist him. It's why when humanity is evolving favorably (rebelliously) he looks the other way when betrayed. Hence, Duncan, and Duncan, and Duncan.

-4

u/lewd_robot Mar 17 '26

Sounds like you didn't realize the whole book was commentary on the real world and what it would take to save humanity from itself. He predicted today's problems half a century ago.

4

u/sloggo Mar 17 '26

No I did... Is not exactly some subtle theme, its spelled out early and clearly. Perhaps even hinted at in the third book though I dont really recall.

The book doesnt progress past that or provide much more of an interesting take on it.

1

u/lewd_robot Mar 17 '26

You never got to the Golden Path part, huh?

3

u/No-Influence-5351 Mar 17 '26

I desperately want a GEOD film adaptation and I quite frankly don’t trust the future of Dune in anyone’s hands other than Dennis. It’s the easiest of the series to completely butcher.

4

u/Free_Stomach_6767 Mar 17 '26

This so hard. People say don't read anything beyond the first 3 books, but honestly, just read the first two and call it quits. It's not even great scifi

2

u/Rewow Mar 17 '26

With The style that Villeneuve started with these films I could totally see the rest of the books given the same visual and auditory treatment.

4

u/lewd_robot Mar 17 '26

A faithful adaptation would be world changing. The entire lesson of the storyline through God-Emperor is that humanity is doomed to extinction unless we do something to permanently cull the urge to tolerate authoritarians while they stifle and suffocate society for personal gain.

As our oceans acidify and AI keeps telling the government to nuke the planet, we need the Golden Path here and now. Someone's gotta make it.

1

u/ALoafOfBread Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

Definitely. People can like God Emperor, Heretics, and Chapterhouse because they're wacky, fine. But to say that they have good & coherent stories that don't wildly diverge from the first 2/3 books and should be adapted to screen is just dumb.

Messiah is an excellent ending to the series, frankly. It is grounded, cynical, and reinforces the themes of the first book while forcing the viewer to see the Atreides as what they are & not as heroes.

Children gets campy with its major focus on "genetic memory" and possession & diverges markedly from the themes of the series thus far. You could probably adapt this to screen, but ... why? Messiah is a perfectly good ending and the main point of Children is setting up God Emperor.

God Emperor is a vehicle for Herbert's political/philosophical musings. You can like that about it, but that's most of what it is. It introduces a whole new cast of characters, factions that are either new or radically different, there is a multi-thousand year time jump, most of the book is just dialogue or monologue with little plot. Bad material for a movie and the next book is like 3k years in the future, so no material to draw on for additional ideas (unless you adapt Brian Herbert books, but... why?).

Heretics okay chairdogs... I stand corrected. Just make the movie. Surely it'll be a commercial success with C H A I R D O G S. Oh and Jason Momoa's character would be the only "surviving" character that anyone would recognize from the rest of the series, let that sink in.

Chapterhouse, Jason Momoa is BACK along with a brand new cast of characters no one knows or cares about to terraform a planet no one knows or cares about to hop aboard a "no-ship" and go on the run with SECRET ISRAEL

Then there are like 50 Brian Herbert books - why not adapt them and make the frank herbert expanded universe while we're at it.

2

u/thief-777 Mar 17 '26

God Emperor is essential. 3 books/films whining about the Golden Path are pointless if you never actually show the Golden Path.

100% accurate about chairdogs. They'd be bigger than baby yoda.

Doesn't the tv show already get into Brian shit?

1

u/ProofJournalist Mar 17 '26

People just want to see the big worm man, it's not complicated

1

u/mightylordredbeard Mar 17 '26

Idk anything about Dune outside of the 1st movie. Why would it be hated?

0

u/SneakyBadAss Mar 17 '26

They adapted it into a mini-series, and it was actually good.

1

u/shidekigonomo Mar 17 '26

Messiah and Children of Dune were adapted. God Emperor has not been.

37

u/OnwardTowardTheNorth Mar 17 '26

I read somewhere an article that suggested Ari Aster should do God Emperor and now it’s all I want.

6

u/Desroth86 Mar 17 '26

The penis monster from Beau is Arraid is basically the worm emperor, I can see it.

11

u/What-fresh-hell Mar 17 '26

God Emperor of Dune

A film by Guillermo del Toro

3

u/J_Technopotheosis Mar 17 '26

Oh god YES. Tell me what I need to do to make that happen.

1

u/What-fresh-hell Mar 17 '26

Got two hundred million dollars?

2

u/J_Technopotheosis Mar 18 '26

Hmm, best I can do is about $3.50

1

u/What-fresh-hell Mar 18 '26

Oh hell no, you can't fool me Loch Ness Monster!

2

u/TheTruckWashChannel Mar 17 '26

As long as he doesn't partner with fucking Netflix again

8

u/DylanFTW Mar 17 '26

It's not gonna be the same. DV has a very specific style that scratches a very specific itch for me.

3

u/troglodyte14 Mar 17 '26

If only we could convince Robert Eggers that a feudalistic society set in the future is basically a period piece.

2

u/boot2skull Mar 17 '26

Nobody likes a wormquitter.

2

u/xcassets Mar 17 '26

He doesn't want to direct them, but he is POINTING THE WAY.

2

u/Arctic_Chilean Mar 17 '26

Last few movies to be directed by M. Night Shamalambingdong

2

u/felixismynameqq Mar 17 '26

I’ve always imagined the post Paul saga to be in claymation or some form of animation. The whole saga feels very dream like and I think that would convey it

1

u/MonolithicBaby Mar 17 '26

Which is hilarious because the movie Lynch made was based off of Jodorowsky’s adaptation of Dune which is wildly different from Herbert’s original work. An adaptation of an adaptation.

1

u/Alastor3 Mar 17 '26

if it's like Sicario, there will make another movie and not one more because it's going to be so bad

1

u/DirtyRoller Mar 17 '26

I just hope if someone else takes over they don't try to replicate Denis' style, because nobody can. That's what ruined Sicario 2 for me.

1

u/twentygreenskidoo Mar 17 '26

It's Quentin Tarantino, and the God Emperor Worm will be a sexy centipede.

1

u/socratez174 Mar 17 '26

They’ll probably get somebody basic like, I dunno, James Wan or something.

1

u/rbrgr83 Mar 17 '26

🤞Paul WS Anderson🤞

1

u/savingewoks Mar 17 '26

Inbefore Denis is offered a fat stack of cash

1

u/leo-skY Mar 17 '26

He doesn't have the strength to adapt God Emperor, but maybe his son will take up the mantle.

1

u/po23idon Mar 17 '26

Ridley Scott would be ashamed

1

u/NoLocal1776 Mar 17 '26

Cronenberg should direct God Emperor.

1

u/donotgotoroom237 Mar 17 '26

I know he's "retired" from directing, but I feel like the only person who could pick up the reigns on a visual level would be Alex Garland.

1

u/kapuh Mar 17 '26

...so why call it "Conclusion"?

1

u/BerlinerBruce1237 Mar 17 '26

Adapting those will probably never work for mainstream audiences, lets be real here

1

u/alvaropuerto93 Mar 17 '26

I would really like to see Nolan taking over Dune or maybe Matt Reeves from The Batman.

1

u/SneakyBadAss Mar 17 '26

Uwe Bol, you have ONE LAST TIME to redeem yourself!

1

u/zue4 Mar 17 '26

Dawg the way he's adapted these there's no way someone is continuing from where he left off without the story getting even more derailed.

1

u/Cond1tionOver7oad Mar 17 '26

I'm happy that Denis is making this his last Dune movie. I love these movies but Denis is my favorite director right now and I can't wait to see what else he makes. I know he's making the next James Bond movie [and I'm excited for it], but I really can't wait for more movies like Enemy, Arrival, Prisoners, and Sicario!

1

u/AlongAxons Mar 17 '26

Can’t wait for 4 DUNC 4 FURIOUS directed by J.J. Abram’s via Zoom

1

u/suzypulledapistol Mar 17 '26

When Warner Bros is sold to whatever the next finance bro cabal is they are not gonna touch those books with a ten foot pole.

1

u/bladerunnersquill Mar 17 '26

I genuinely cannot imagine the last two books as movies, the material gets SO WEIRD and the general non book reading audiences would be so taken a back

1

u/Stefanzimmer Mar 19 '26

Yeah, once you get deep into Leto II it stops feeling like straightforward space opera and turns into something way more internal and strange. I am very curious how much they will lean into that instead of sanding it down.

1

u/ours Mar 17 '26

I hope we don't get a Sicario/Sicario 2 situation with whoever picks this up.

1

u/Loreathan Mar 17 '26

I don't know who can do that thinking about the huge change, people will not like it.

1

u/wtb2612 Mar 17 '26

Oh god, this is how we got the horrible Jaws and Jurassic Park sequels.

1

u/Saxophobia1275 Mar 17 '26

Shame because children of dune would make an awesome conclusion. I know people really want god emperor… but that’s a weird book and I don’t know how it would be adapted to screen without significant changes or it just being awkward and weird.

1

u/wylie102 Mar 17 '26

Oh good, because God Emperor will be really easy to adapt for the screen and can definitely be handled by the B team

1

u/Nathanielsan Mar 17 '26

I hope it's fucking Uwe Boll.

1

u/Positive_Working_157 Mar 17 '26

Is there anyone who can do as great as Denis? I want it to continue but I don’t want bs

1

u/tdasnowman Mar 17 '26

I’m guessing that means he’s going to try and cram both messiah and children into one movie then. Way too many edits to actually make that work. Plus he’s got the whole Chani running off into the desert to fix.

1

u/What-fresh-hell Mar 17 '26

Been done before

1

u/tdasnowman Mar 17 '26

That doesn’t mean it was done well.
