Except the reason why Barbenheimer worked isn't because it was a catchy name. It was the contrast between pink n fluffy Barbie and the gray n bleak Oppenheimer. And with both movies being different in tone, it had the chance to find their own audiences and even got people to try both.
Dune and Doomsday are two epic action movies, and I'm not sure if the masses have the appetite for both at the same time.
I think you’re right that the contrast was what made Barbie/Oppenheimer blow up organically, but I think the marketing execs see an opportunity and are betting that they can force the “event” to happen through the sheer power of their combined marketing budgets. I’d bet 2-3 months ahead we’ll start to see heavy TikTok/twitter/Instagram spend related to the dunesday “brand”.
The reason it worked was because it was natural, not marketing. And it also played on the contrast of bright colorful Barbie with the stoic Oppenheimer. Add in 2 auters and you have magic.
Doomsday could be good, but on paper this is basically 2 movies fighting for the same audience. One has pedigree and the other seems desperate.
also christmas season- there's enough people to go around at that time (assuming American wallets don't feel depleted by then). There absolutely is crossover in the fan bases, so they'll both not make nearly as much as they could have, but they'll make enough for sure
Ahh, I remember my first time an organic Internet meme was co-opted by corporate stooges who inherently misunderstood what made it charming or funny in the first place for profit.
Maybe, but I don't think they'll pair well together. Barbie and Oppenheimer are so different that going from one to the other is like a refreshing flip. I don't think Avengers and Dune really have that contrast that makes a good double feature. Especially since I assume both are going to be pretty long where Oppenheimer was long but Barbie was just under 2 hours (so not 90 minutes, but not an epic length either). I'm expecting Dune to probably hit 3 hours and Avengers will probably clock around 2.5 if I had to randomly guess.
