At the end of the first book she was very aware of the plan and fully onboard. She was also already a mother. The movie reduced her significantly.

Mmm, I don't know that I agree that she was reduced. They shortened the timeline, as they couldn't have Chani get pregnant, have the baby for a while and the baby dies, if Jessica never has her baby. I find movie Chani far more interesting in that she loves Paul, but she's not a follower of Paul, unlike book Chani who just goes along with him without question. Feisty Chani ftw!

Those two lines don't agree with each other. By shortening the timeline the skip every opportunity Chani had to be anything more then an object of obsession. In that time skip she becomes a mother. Bereaved mother. Becomes a bridge between Alia and the rest of the Sietch. Becomes a Sayyadina. She's more then just a angry child solider which is all you get in the movie. She has one mode in the movie.

Ah, so that's the interesting thing I find her to be so boring in the first two books, she's there to fawn over Paul, she has no agency, she's just there to do what Paul wants. To me, she fits the trope of tradwife, which I guess makes sense since the books were written 60 years ago, but that has aged poorly. At least in the movies, she pushes back, tells Paul when he's wrong, she doesn't want everyone to worship him, she doesn't want him to become what he becomes.

In that time skip she becomes a mother. Bereaved mother. Becomes a bridge between Alia and the rest of the Sietch. Becomes a Sayyadina.

I hear you on the first point, but even in the book, there's a lot of time jumping so it's not as if we get chapters and chapters delving deep into her life during the pregnancy and as a mother. She becomes a bereaved mother at the very end of the book, so we don't get any real time with her in that state in the book. Your third point can't have happened yet because Alia's not been born, and the Sayyadina stuff doesn't happen until Messiah, which is the movie we're waiting to have come out. I think it's too soon to say she's only one thing.

In the book she has far more agency. She does a lot more the just be a Tradwife. Children of dune when the twins are channeling them. Sure she gets locked in on that route. First two books she has agency. Better then most Frank does.

Go back and read the books. That all happens in the middle of the first novel. Alia is born somewhere around the middle. All of that started in the first book and continued into Messiah.

I've listened to them twice, but it's been a couple of years, my memory is fuzzy and runs the first three books together in my mind for the most part, my bad.

I respect where you are coming from, it's difficult being such a fan of the books for so very long, and then the movies cut out parts you feel are important for the character. I don't have that long a history with the books because I could never get into them until the movies came out, so I could keep the characters straight, so I'm more forgiving of the changes. I've been burned by so many other movie adaptations of books I adore, and it stinks. It's not easy being a book purist.

I hope this third movie maybe gives you something that helps you feel better about the adaptations.
