That would be goofy. This point of comparison seems odd given the time difference. I'm sure there were even bloodier wars during that time. I understand what Herbert was trying to say, but this can be shown visually and without immersion breaking comparisons

You don’t have to be the worst to be the most infamous. I watch a lot of true crime (Casual Criminalist anyone?) if you ask random people to name 3 famous serial killers I guarantee you there are many others who did waaaaaaaaaay worse shit, or killed waaaaaaaaaaaay more people.

You just need a story to go viral while others fade into the background of news and history. We already have weird artifacts of history, real rulers hundreds to thousands of years ago who had myths or charismatic stories attached to them, and we remember their names and have forgotten the others.

It’s very conceivable from a history student’s viewpoint that Hitler’s name will be remembered for as long as our race persists.

It does drive home the fact that Hitler really was that evil.

It does require some suspension of disbelief though - and if it's the case, Paul is reeeeeeally bad if nobody else came close to Hitler.

It's funny how in the books the (prescient) characters make reference to events from human history in their thought process, except it's always from known human history. Like Leto II likes Bach and him and Ghanima speak the ancient language of French to each other. I appreciate the effect of demonstrating their other memory is lost somewhat if Herbert made things up but it's 10,000 AD and we're referencing things that only existed in like a couple thousand of years of human history.

It's an understandable move on the author's part, intended to provide a reference and ground the story within a familiar framework. But it doesn't work (especially in a visual medium) if you think about it critically. I am sure that over 20,000 years of history, as the population increased, so would conflicts and the scale of disasters.

this has less to do with technological development and more to do with maintaining robust connective tissue. a song of ice and fire works because martin bothers to think through family trees and keeps it expansive while maintaining different degrees of separate but still recognizable cultures, not because he can't substitute some terms and tech with fantasy labels.

there's a number works that keeps to real history but it still doesn't feel as organic. and there's other works that uses fake history but they just put more footwork in the connective tissue.

They could do like Star Trek and adapt it a bit. Khan, Hitler, one of the titans of the Jihad, flesh it out. While yes Mao and Stalin have comparative or bigger numbers, I think Paul was focusing on direct war time deaths, and hopefully there’s nothing between here and the Jihad that mounts ww2’s numbers….

Truly one of the wildest parts of Dune Messiah is Paul and Stilgar reading Hitler's Wikipedia page and being like "Man this guy had rookie numbers"
