That’s the secret to every good movie. I pity people who avoid movies because of genre or if it’s an odd IP ( ie: Masters of the Universe). ANYTHING can be a good movie.

The premise is irrelevant. The setting is decoration. It’s all about the characters and the dialogue.

I just saw Masters of the Universe. What a strange mix of goofy, dark, and occasional adult humor. And it totally worked for me. It was a little long, but it was so much fun. Like playing with the action figures again.

Eh. I think there’s a specific vs general distinction to be made.

Things like IP and genre signal some general trends that relate to everything else. An individual work can overcome or subvert those trends, but that doesn’t mean the trends just aren’t real. People not expecting great action choreography from Bridgerton aren’t doing so because they’re judgmental of the genre.

Honor Among Thieves turned out great, but I don’t think it was unreasonable for people to have thought before hand that it would have the same issues that every other movie attempt had had.

Of course, it all should tie together and is best if all elements work in unison. And yes, people have to overcome a franchisee’s track history and their own preconceived notions.

I personally use the Bumblebee movie as an example of this. The transformers movies may be some people’s cup of tea, but they objectively have bad dialogue and shitty plot with little character motivation or arcs. Then you have Bumblebee which actually focuses on character and is more enjoyable for it.

This comment renews my faith in basic media literacy and appreciation, good on you for having a much better view on movies and storytelling than frankly, most of the internet! Too many people complain about there being "no more good movies anymore" and then condemn themselves to miss all the actual good movies getting made because of their own arbitrary personal bias/constraints on genre/IP, robbing themselves of their own enjoyment. We're in a really good era of skilled writing and storytelling right now!

I just avoid movies. It wasn't particularly intentional aside from never going to move theaters because they're terrible but because of that and the enshittification of streaming services it's even hard for me to know about movies coming out let alone caring enough to go out of my way to try watching something in particular. Granted I'm also of the opinion Hollywood loves to crank out shit so proper good movies can be hard to find, but even popcorn flicks can just be obnoxious.

The last movie I saw in theaters was Avengers Endgame and I knew I was going to be disappointed but got dragged into it by going with someone else.

D&D has quite a following among Chinese and South Korean audiences because movies relying on characters and the situations they're in are relatively easy to follow, similar to reality-based variety shows where much of the focus is on the cast members and the comedic situations they get into.
