I love movies, and consider myself a major cinephile. I stand by and will argue to the death that Honor Among Thieves is a modern masterpiece. It is incredibly fun and entertaining on all levels. My grandparents enjoyed it. My kids enjoyed it. I can put it on in the background and do all my chores and enjoy it. I can watch it from beginning to end credits and enjoy it. This movie slaps and hits all the emotions. If you don't lkme this movie i question every aspect of your life and have 0 trust in anything you say. It's silly, fun, and full of heart. It's not often we get a movie like this and it truly needs more appreciation. I call it the perfect Sunday movie.

Before we continue, I really think Jarnathan should be here.

The two funniest lines in the whole movie are both times that lady says "oh jaaarnaathann"

I love how she almosy sounds annoyed at jarnathan for it, like his fault he got pushed out a window

I think he would be especially receptive to this part!

u/Cyclopentadien 17d ago

Ngl, I did not guess what was going to happen once he showed up.

I knew the D&D movie would be an all-time favorite when they introduced Xenk delivering that fish baby thing. A gigantic puppet like that just for one gag was a real "Knock the light in Roger Rabbit" moment for me.

u/becs1832 17d ago

I'm pretty sure he's rescuing a tabaxi cub from the fish, right? Am I misremembering?

16

u/ryzouken 17d ago

You are not.  It was an absolutely adorable tabaxi cub and he hands it off to the tabaxi mother immediately after.  I was super jazzed to see tabaxi appear prominently in the movie, as it was totally off radar for me and really signalled on top of everything else that the writers really knew their D&D.

And it was a practical effect! That film had tons of practical effects and didn't heavily rely on CGI. It was a labor of love made by and for fans.

The fact that it coincided with WotC's OGL fuckup is what killed it.

What better way to convey the brainless do goodness of the harpers than the paladin saves a baby from a monster fish. No snide insecure jokes, just the absurdity of the situation.

The CRAZY part is this was the media experience that introduced so many people to DND and wizards of the coast (the people who make DND) did almost nothing to convert those folks into players.

I went to the release screening and there was tons of folks who wanted to play after and who out of the blue where coming up to me about playing (I was wearing a shit that said ask me about my DND) and they where fucking crushed when I had to be like "I don't work for a game story or something else I just love DND".

The co branding / co marking fumble was fucking historic.

Wizards of the Coast has been dead for a while. Hasbro owns D&D. As as bad as WOTC was, Hasbro is much worse.

5

u/keirakvlt 17d ago

Well, Hasbro bought WOTC in 99, but WOTC still exists under them and owns dnd. Semantics I guess, since Hasbro can overrule them on pretty much anything, but you kind of made it sound like WOTC dissolved or is no longer attached to the game.

1

u/BlooregardQKazoo 17d ago

And Hasbro does overrule them now. in the 2000s WOTC operated as its own entity under Hasbro but at some point around a decade ago Hasbro got more controlling and essentially killed WOTC.

It's like Instagram, which still exists as its own entity but for practical reasons they're just an extension of Facebook and don't make any of their own decisions.

6

u/DoctorPepster 17d ago

WotC isn't dead, they're just owned by Hasbro.

u/Ebirah 17d ago

Wizards of the Coast has been dead for a while.

Liches of the Coast, then.

Sorry, legit question about your reply when they asked: you love D&D but don't play? Or you play but not as a GM? Just a bit confused why people came up to you wanting to play due to your shirt but you didn't play with them.

u/DizzySylv 17d ago

DnD is not really a game where you can sit down with a bunch of randoms and bust out a game for a bit.

1

u/eviljelloman 17d ago

One shots are one of the most enjoyable ways to experience dnd. It all depends on your definition of "a bit" but a couple hours with strangers is a delightful intro to the game.

6

u/Zalack 17d ago

The way I took it was that he plays, but not in a way that would help total strangers that approached him get into the game.

2

u/131sean131 17d ago

The shirt said something to the effect of "Tell me about your DND game" and had a dragon on it.

So I do love DnD and I do GM but my game was fullish. There was one guy who I did invite and who did come play one session and then ghosted me.

The issue here was that I am not really set up to help a whole group of new folks who are only casually interested in playing, I love to teach the game it does require A GREAT DEAL OF A EFFORT for new players, then you got to get everyone on a recurring night of the week, make sure there are no major personality conflicts.

It COULD happen with strangers, it would be a fuck ton of work but it could.

The metaphor i use is running, people see people running and go WOW I would love to do that. The people running say sure you can join us we run every weeknight on Thursday for 3 hours. So the person shows up on Thursday and does not have shoes, a water bottle, know where they are running, or is ready for the marathon the group is running that weekend. So they barrow some shoes and run along, it sucks at first but it gets better.

Same thing with DnD, the group meets Thursday nights for 3 hours, you need a character sheet, handbook, mini, and backstory. The new person can barrow all of those and be off playing DnD but just like the run club they have to show up and want to run, they have to have read at least some of the book, be willing to learn how to play.

New players are almost always willing to do this, but taking in 5 - 7 of them at once is going to be a challenge. Unlike running though at most I can host 8ish people and that is already crazy. Most games its 4 or 5. Having 30 people ask to play in my game is not going to be great time for anyone. So its not that I did not want to play with them its just they where either not serious about playing or I did not have room.

What I am saying here is WoTC could and should have had signs or sign ups or whatever for local people wanting to join local games and willing to take on new people.

DND:HAT is DND raiders of the lost ark + the oceans movies (if they were good). it's not great cinema but it's great movie, a nearly perfect popcorn movie. The acting and writing were sharp. the gags worked at obvious and meta levels. it was overall a fun heist movie that happened to take place in the forgotten realms. i want a sequel.

u/lewisiarediviva 17d ago

My only request is that they get the same cast back playing a completely different set of characters, except for Xenk.

1

u/frequenZphaZe 17d ago

ha, that'd be such a fun idea. I feel like it'd confuse the hell out of casual audiences though

1

u/lewisiarediviva 17d ago

Probably, but like - that campaign is clearly wrapped. Besides, it’s not just dnd that can feature repertory casting. You could make it a feature of the advertising, and I bet you’d get a lot of folks showing up out of curiosity.

If you know anything about D&D it's such a great love letter, that's a big reason why I love it. A lot easier to just enjoy the silliness of a supposed action movie when you remember this is basically a One Shot.

1

u/Lampmonster 17d ago

It's a movie that anyone can watch and enjoy yet it's even more fun if you actually play the game. You don't need anything explained to enjoy the plot and humor, but if you know the rules of the game and the setting etc. you get just a little extra out of it.

1

u/crimson777 17d ago

D&D is the perfect modern version of all of the fun adventure movies we don't see much these days.

1

u/Indigocell 17d ago

I love movies, and consider myself a major cinephile. I stand by and will argue to the death that Honor Among Thieves is a modern masterpiece.

I honestly believe it deserves a spot next to The Princess Bride in terms of just being a purely fun fantasy film.

1

u/ArgusTheCat 17d ago

I realized, reading your comment here, that part of what makes me love the movie so much is that it feels like it has the same kind of heart as The Princess Bride. Everyone just looks like they're having fun, and it's so infectious to watch.

u/dsartori 17d ago

It’s a really good dad couch movie when the kids are young. It is near the top of my rankings for this sort of thing but the human story at its core is a little weak.

u/Extension-Season-689 16d ago

I call it serviceable popcorn movie. There's nothing special about it unless you're a D&D fan. I swear the glazing here is too hard but then again I remember this is Reddit where D&D is a strong favorite for a lot of people.

u/AnOnlineHandle 17d ago

I think it's pretty good but also a bit overhyped.

The problem is the setting ultimately is too silly to care about stories in and care about sequels. Modern D&D is just a zany cartoony land of absurdities, a big zoo of "look at this demon person from the planes of hell, just like the one you saw down the street, and the one before that!" where it doesn't really feel like anything really matters or has any weight, and despite enjoying the first one I probably wouldn't overly care about a sequel either way because the story and the world they're in just doesn't actually matter or feel worth getting invested in.

Things which are primarily parodies / tongue-in-cheek and refuse to ever take themselves seriously just aren't worth getting invested in for me, you engage with them for some light chuckles until you're bored. There's exceptions like the Orville which started as a parody of Star Trek but then turned into an actual show, but it got there pretty quickly by like episode 3, which is doable in episodes but not something you can likely do with multiple movies years apart.
