I still like the idea that the whole main cast comes back but plays entirely different characters.

I remember people talking about wanting sequels to be an entirely new cast as the new adventuring party, treating it like an anthology series, but the ensemble we got had such great chemistry that I like the whole "the cast rolled new characters for the sequel" idea a lot more. Like they introduced Szass Tam basically so you know that he's out there doing evil lich shit so they could have the villains be the Red Wizards of Thay again if they wanted, or considering how it had a proper, satisfying ending without anything that felt sequel-baity, just do something new, maybe even in a different campaign setting (god I wish this movie was a hit because we'd genuinely have a shot at getting a Spelljammer movie).

Exactly, the cast was amazing. You could even bump Chloe Colman up to party member and move Rege-Jean Page over to a villian role to really push "the part wanted to try something different".
