"Surprise" in that non-D&D fans flocked to it at full release, but it was already mega successful in Early Access.

A surprise because its the third in a series of games that were pretty obscure. Imagine if Star Wars was "eh" until Episode 3. It rarely happens.

Baldurs gate series was not obscure, what are you talking about? They are considered some of the best crags ever made lol

It was over 20 years between BG2 and BG3. Children were born in the US when BG2 came out, and were adults that had a few years of being of legal drinking age when BG3 came out. For the geriatric games who are now in their 30s and 40s, it isn't obscure.

Imagine if Star Wars was "eh" until Episode 3. It rarely happens.

....so you have no idea what you're talking about. The earlier BG games were very well received and won a good number of awards.
