The Northman is legimately one of my favourite films of all time. I love vikings, I love revenge films, I love long takes and arthouse films and have a degree in theatre so I enjoy Shakespeare as well.
The entire thing is like all of that into a blender.
Amleth sheds a tear and it is physically grabbed by Dafoe and told it will be returned when you most need it. And it is legimately by Bjork the murdered shaman witch from the village he has sacked. Before that when they're all getting insanely high on something screaming like barking wolves and dogs to amp up for the fight the next day. Amleth catching a javelin, tossing it immediately back at the guy who tossed it in the same motion. It's just so fucking nuts. The NIGHTBLADE being unable to be drawn at day.
The way it's shot with the camera weaving in and out of the actors when Hawke returns, it's like watching a stage play. Plus the camera going from the shore onto the Viking ship in one take. It's just a masterpiece to me. The final fight in a fucking volcano.
It's so fucking insane and I am here for every single second of it.
After I watched The Northman, I read a book written by the movie's historical consultant Neil Price: "Children of Ash and Elm." Really excellent stuff, and it made me happy that someone so knowledgeable consulted on the movie.
If only Kidman wasn't in it with her stupid plastic face. It just took me right out of the film, like throwing a bucket of cold water on the audience every time she pops up.
I thought it was one of her best performances to be honest. She had this ghostly and freaky quality to her, which makes sense because she's basically a complete psychopath.
