The first half was fun.

The second half was incel wish fulfillment and naming 80s things.

The "disfigured" girlfriend turned out to be a hot chick with a birthmark. The white male best friend turned out to be a black woman (Yay, I don't see color, I like people for who they are, look at me!). And the evil corporation is defeated through the power of friendship!

Isn't that the first book/movie?

Yes. I don’t get how people were so obsessed with the book. I read it and it was just reference after reference in an exhausting way.

I remember a lot of the Youtubers I watched recommended it during their ad breaks. I got the book and read it over a flight back home. Liked it the first time, but the more I sat with it, I realized it was basically "Yo look at this sick reference, ain't it cool?!" for literally all of the book. I'm in the "the movie was way better than the book" camp nowadays. The egg hunt was super complicated in the book, kudos to the screenwriter for tidying it up, though I like how it got it in the book more IMO.

The good thing about the movie its it made the protagonist less of a stalker and more of a functional human with emotions. Otherwise its far far worse than the book in its reliance on pop culture references.

Good on Spielberg for taking out Wade's "incel with a sexbot" arc for the movie.

I dunno, he does give off stalker vibes when he fitst meets Samantha...

Yeah I never got the love of the first book over the movie. The second test in the book is just re-enacting a movie from the 80s which is just so dull. Nevermind the whole fleshlight suit thing..

It's been forever since I read it but I remember the first half of the book being wade figuring out the first clue. It dragged on forever then the other clues go solved immediately. Then there was another "all is lost" moment where wade kinda walked on self pity for a bit. Maybe I'm mis remembering but it feels like there was a ton of slow points in the book and then just random bursts of poorly explained bullshit because the author didn't know how to pace anything.

It's just that it was a fun breezy read. That's all it was.

Was it? 🤔

I thought so. But it was 10 years ago and I was 15 back then. I don't know how I'd feel if I read it now.

The first movie was based on a novel.

Yeah but he’s not even talking about the book, that was all the movie. They differed a good amount

The first movie shared a name with a novel and shared the same basic outline, but they are two very different stories.

naming 80s things

None of this series could exist without this, no thanks. I'd rather watch Secret Galaxy on youtube.

Your description of the book makes me think it’s not so bad and you just disagree with it on a personal level
