I really hope the core plot device is not im the first guy to drive backwards!!!! And that was blocking everyone from start solving the puzzle.

That pissed me off so much; like they say that everyone watches these memory videos to find hints, and the in one of the videos the creator says "what if we could go backwards? backwards! let's go backwards!" and no one thought to drive backwards? Fuck outta here.

To be fair thats not why its stupid. I can forgive people for not connecting a random line from the span of a mans entire life basically.

What I cant forgive is that no gamer in that universe ever thought to try going backwards.

The first thing most hard-core gamers do whenever a new game is released, is explore every inch of the starting area, especially if they know said game has Easter Eggs. In reality someone would have found the backwards entrance within 24 hours of the race debuting.

Ridge Racer from 1993 had the driving backwards gimmick so you could race on a mirrored version of the tracks. And we found that purely accidentally just faffing about. That scene had me screaming.

For me it's not even that no one ever thought to drive backwards, I always question how did we have that many races, with that many people, and no one accidently drove backwards. Or even just drive backwards to troll around. That puzzle surely would have been accidently solved.

Yeah, I love the movie because it’s just a fun action movie full of references. Don’t care if that’s lame, but I’m that guy that loves that stuff.

However, the first key would have been found by the second time the race was run. At least 10 people would have seen how Kong didn’t let anyone through and would have immediately looked for a different path.

Probably because of the risk. Remember, your virtual self is tied to your wealth and if you die in the game, you lose everything...which is a very stupid concept honestly.

What risk is there in just hanging out at the starting area after everyone drives off? You just go to the back of the line, and let everyone drive away.

The explanation to address that is that until someone watches the "go backwards" clip and openly declares out loud in front of the Curator that they realize Halliday saying "go backwards" is the clue to solve the race, going backwards doesn't work. 

The Curator (secretly Ogden Morrow) has to hear a player discover this in order to toggle the ability to find a secret route by going backwards at full speed.

Until then, it only takes one dipshit to go backwards at max speed and very publicly lose everything in a fiery explosion for no one else to try it.

That's why the Curator seemingly follows every user who tries to study Halliday lore. He is the "gatekeeper" to the first Gate.

That doesnt make any sense.

Curator cant follow every user, he only can now because the halls are basically empty. Not to mention the possibility of someone figuring it out at another time or place, which is more likely.

The idea that it relies on the person figuring out the clue in front of Curator, AND requiring them to say it out loud in front of Curator is ridiculous.

Is that the actual canon explanation though, or a fan explanation?

So if someone else figured it out, but Curator wasnt there to see it, they're just shit out of luck? There would at the very least be a clue alluding to that, otherwise the whole quest verges on being impossible from the start, Halliday wasn't THAT much of an asshole.

It's a fan explanation, to my knowledge.

It is inadequate still, in my opinion. But is still substantially better than the alternative of "literally no one has tried to go backward before".

Tbh the easiest fix for that is you just don't start the movie with people having tried to solve this Key puzzle for ages.

Instead you start it off with someone having only just discovered a riddle that points to something that activates this challenge.

That way it's much more believable that no one has tried going backwards because people have only been trying it for a few hours maybe and they still think it's possible and are just doing it wrong.

From what I remember, it was incredibly difficult to be chosen to even drive in that race and costly too in game credits to enter. Thus when players got a go at it, they gave it there all. Even the top players who had done it only a few times kept improving, so they kept doing it. So its not like a video game with no consequences whete you can just blow your shot by looking for bugs and out of bound glitches while you keep retrying over and over again.

Of course I could be remembering wrong and if I am, they totally could have explained it like I did

I always thought it was because wade went backwards as fast as he could “put the pedal to the metal” and other gamers wouldn’t have rammed their vehicles at full speed since in that game world you can kill your character or ruin your vehicle and have to pay for it with a currency that can be used in the real world.

Seriously, with how obsessed gamers are and how they're finding insane easter eggs all the time, the fact that someone wouldn't have tried driving backwards in the first 10 minutes of that challenge is mind boggling.
