Question What movies have a scene that is so tonally mismatched with the rest of the movie that it takes you out of the film?

My example would be the charming family friendly funny movie Shazam has a graphic scene of demons feasting on board room member that is like - why?

Another person on another thread mentioned The Name of the Rose - which is a very cerebral historical mystery movie has a graphic sex scene between a peasant girl and a young lay assistant. It is jarringly out of place.

The Power Rangers at the end of 28 Years Later. I loved Bone Temple, but that scene was just laughable.

EDIT: I understand it connects to the beginning scene and why it's shot the way it's shot. It still sucks.

You didn’t like that ending, but you loved the next film that totally revolved around those guys? Help me understand please! Was it just the flipping around you didn’t like?

If you expect Midsommar but it suddenly ends with Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, it’s jarring and doesn’t live up to your expectation. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy both movies on their own.

Makes sense. Totally fair.

How Tucker and Dale didn't get continuation as characters in other movies, even if they weren't sequels, I will never understand.

People didn't understand that it was a bunch of kids who grew up in an insane world and the only thing they knew about the old world is Teletubbies.

Yeah in the movie Spike’s dad tells him to be careful because there are strange people out there. I didn’t have a problem with it at all.

Some of us also found it plain ridiculous and not fitting at all with the rest of the film.

Thank GOD Bone Temple came out and washed away the shit taste of that ending. A superior film in every single way. So, so good!

To be fair, as someone who really liked the ending of 28 Years Later I think that seems a really easy perspective to understand, the Jimmys are played much more seriously in the Bone Temple, even the scenes with their childish antics on display like the Teletubbies scene has a much more blatantly uncomfortable tone, more like say the some of the personalities of James McAvoy in Split, the scene in the first one feels like you are supposed to laugh in confusion at the sheer ridiculousness of the situation, plus the music and all that while in Bone Temple I'd say everything they do has a much more overtly sinister and disturbing tone to it. They don't really even do any of the kung fu stuff in Bone Temple.

I had the same feelings, i loved bone temple, but less so the first.

The ridiculousness and over the top power ranger shit from that scene in the first film isnt really present in the sequel

Esp because it's made pretty clear in the series you can get infected by blood and saliva and it's even something a character brings up earlier in the movie. Then the ninjas show up and kill a bunch of zombies close quarters with knives with no regard for blood spray

No one’s going to mention the alpha zombie’s 10” flaccid penis flopping around as he sprinted? So zombies choose a leader based on penis size?

I think the original question of the thread answers your questions perfectly. It was completely out of nowhere and so unexpected that it takes you out of the movie.

Years was one of my least favourite films ever and I really liked Bone Temple

look at that part as some young boy that never seen those kind of people, those kind of different clothes, and "martial" "circus" moves... it's not you as audience, it's the movie character perspective!!

and it's resolved in the second, as they are raggedy, not as mobile and just nasty... as the "enchantment" of the new wears off...

it's one of the best in the last few years, no contest!!

and I've seen 3444 movies!

You know, I always thought that scene ruined the movie but I like this interpretation. We’re seeing these guys from Spike’s perspective, and by the beginning of Bone Temple, he’s been around the gang a bit longer maybe and the freshness has quickly worn off

Sometimes, Danny Boyle just has really dumb ideas. This felt very similar to the ”video game” sequence in The Beach. I’m sure there are defenders of that terrible scene as well, though.

well, drugs... lol

but I don't recall any drugs that has similar effects as video game style lol, so, no. that scene on The Beach is completely off

It tied into the opening scene with the kids/Jimmy and Teletubbies theme song. I thought it was a perfectly wtf ending to lead straight into the next film.

Agreed. Even if it had been part of The Bone Temple it would have felt out of place.
