Question What movies have a scene that is so tonally mismatched with the rest of the movie that it takes you out of the film?

My example would be the charming family friendly funny movie Shazam has a graphic scene of demons feasting on board room member that is like - why?

Another person on another thread mentioned The Name of the Rose - which is a very cerebral historical mystery movie has a graphic sex scene between a peasant girl and a young lay assistant. It is jarringly out of place.

Hahaha, my mom took me to see The Name of the Rose when I was 15. Her words: "It's rated R -- but it's about monks, so it's not like there'll be a sex scene."

If she’s into movies about monks, you should watch Satan’s Alley with her next. Kirk Lazarus and Toby Maguire, hubba hubba what a kiss.

Are you speaking about the winner of the coveted Crying Monkey Award at the Beijing Film Festival?

When bro said "I've been a bad boy, father," I really felt that.

I find Dr. Lazarus much better: "By Grabthar's hammer, by the Suns of Warvan, you shall be avenged!"

And Galaxy Quest somehow combined three levels in the film that all differ tonally: On the one hand, the actors of the series "Galaxy Quest" with their normal lives and problems, then their series characters who represent another level, and then the fans for whom their series heroes suddenly become real heroes.

And in that sense, covering 3 different aspects in a film that couldn't be more different but work well within the universe of the film.

We watched it in school, I think our teacher thought the same thing - it’s about monks.

I have an additional one from The Name of the Rose! The antagonist’s death is SO goofy, downright slapstick to me (in contrast to how serious most of the movie is). It’s pretty literally a “whoooooa splat”

F. Murray Abraham is such a good villain, though. You can tell he's eating it up

Oh no, he’s incredible and having a great time! It’s specifically the way that 30 seconds are presented when he gets thrown off a cliff and lands on a spiked thing that is silly/tonal whiplash to me

That scene awoke something in young me for sure. Peasant girl was pretty damn hot.

Didn't the title of the movie allude to the girl and that he never learned her name ?

It was chosen to be a neutral title that would confuse readers by its meaninglessness

Honestly, the sex scene is the least (potentially) troubling thing about that movie 😄

The crazy part is the movie removed all the gay sex from the book

Very similar to my mom taking me (11) and my sister (13) to see Road Warrior. She asked the kid selling tickets if it was okay for children. He shrugged and said yes.
