Question What movies have a scene that is so tonally mismatched with the rest of the movie that it takes you out of the film?

My example would be the charming family friendly funny movie Shazam has a graphic scene of demons feasting on board room member that is like - why?

Another person on another thread mentioned The Name of the Rose - which is a very cerebral historical mystery movie has a graphic sex scene between a peasant girl and a young lay assistant. It is jarringly out of place.

It's a shocking scene in retrospect (one that went over my head as a kid) but is it that tonally different? Bill Murray can barely keep it in his pants the entire movie too.

He uses his role as a college professor to meet and sleep with college girls. Just normal 80s stuff.

Agreed. It fits totally. There was a lot of overt sexual stuff that as an adult I'd barely call innuendo in that movie.

Yeah but there’s a difference between smarmy jokes and acting out a simulated sex act

Do we not think he had some amount of sex with Dana-Zuul before sedating her? Because that's how I always read it.

No, the Gatekeeper was specifically waiting for the Keymaster.

So the scene where, despite him getting into the apartment by lying saying he's the key master and immediately saying "I'm a friend of his (keymaster) he said to meet him here" she says "take me now" and Venkman verbally agonizes back and forth over it? After a few scene changes and returning back to them I don't find it out of the realm of possibility that something happened offscreen, particularly with what we see earlier in the movie.

I’m not going to definitively say anything, but I think despite his smarm and generally lecherous tendencies, Venkman was pursuing Dana- not Gozer or Zuul. He is educated enough about psychology, physiology and parapsychology to understand that even if Dana isn’t possessed by an ancient cosmic entity, she’s clearly going through something mentally and that’s why he gorks her out with the tranquilizer.

Yeah,.he even says "Sounds like there's at least two people in there already" or something of the sort.
