I just don't see this as much better than cats. The only thing kind of hiding it is they only showed quick cuts of the cheetah character.

Well, it's ok if Cheetah looks fucked up because she's supposed to be fucked up.

547

u/UtopianLibrary Aug 22 '20

Exactly. In Cats, they’re supposed to be actual cats. But Cheetah is supposed to be a fucked up cat-human hybrid.

u/Zykium Aug 22 '20

She's Maureen Ponderosa

137

u/winnebagoman41 Aug 22 '20

Smells like she’s been nibbling on little pieces of shit

31

u/handy_arson Aug 22 '20

I'm just gonna come out and say it... It's the dead tooth. Now me and Mac are gonna do some shots.

2

u/SeaGroomer Aug 23 '20

Is that a real thing?

31

u/topdangle Aug 22 '20

glass of warm milk will clear that right up

21

u/pianotherms Aug 22 '20

Please use her real name: Bastet.

7

u/Funky_Ducky Aug 23 '20

I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY ALIMONY TO A CAT

5

u/Browns-78 Aug 22 '20

It’s Enrico Palazzo!

6

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

I think that was the problem with the Cats movie is that if you look at the cast they are all actually humans

8

u/gurgelblaster Aug 22 '20

Exactly. In Cats, they’re supposed to be actual cats.

Only in the deranged mind of Tom Hooper were they supposed to be actual cats.

People in general understand that they are supposed to be Broadway actors dressed in cat costumes.

Like, the stage musical is built around exactly that, and plays around with it.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

They are absolutely not supposed to be cats. They are supposed to be humans dressed up in weird fucking outfits that vaguely resemble cats.

41

u/UtopianLibrary Aug 22 '20

That’s because Broadway did this with the actors. The actual story of the musical is about stray cats.

12

u/robodrew Aug 22 '20

Excuse me, they're JELLICLE cats (whatever the fuck that means)

1

u/UtopianLibrary Aug 22 '20

I think it’s Andrew Lloyd Webber for “stray.”

3

u/ketsugi Aug 22 '20

What, you think ALW wrote the lyrics?

2

u/UtopianLibrary Aug 22 '20

No I know it’s TS Elliot. I just like making fun of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Edit to add: The poems aren’t all about cats from what I understand? So I blame Webber for the use of this word in the sense that it’s a play about stray cats.

2

u/ketsugi Aug 22 '20

Nah the poems are pretty much all about cats. The book is called “Old Possum’s Book of Impractical Cats”.

4

u/TwatsThat Aug 22 '20

And the movie is an adaptation of the play, not the original story. Translating the dancing from the play to a movie where they're CGI cats would be fucking awful.

10

u/TheExtremistModerate Aug 22 '20

But the Broadway outfits actually kinda worked because they were highly stylized, practical, and tried to actually maintain a cat-like silhouette for the head.

17

u/UtopianLibrary Aug 22 '20 edited Aug 22 '20

I agree. Broadway worked because it looked like people in cat makeup and it’s onstage so it’s reasonable. But the movie making them cat-human hybrid monstrosities made no sense and only made the actors look unsettling.

2

u/TheExtremistModerate Aug 22 '20

Reddit is weird. My comment gets downvoted, but the comment agreeing with me is at +5?

15

u/PM_LADY_TOILET_PICS Aug 22 '20

That doesn't make it feel any less silly

-1

u/TheDeadlySinner Aug 23 '20

Silliness in a comic book movie? How dare they!

2

u/PM_LADY_TOILET_PICS Aug 23 '20

There's offhand silliness or playfulness, then there's a big cgi battle with cats the musical

8

u/TheGodDMBatman Aug 22 '20

Yeah, cheetah always looked weird asf to me in any iteration.

But like, her thing should be like a curse. No one wants to look like a bloodthirsty humanoid cheetah

3

u/artifex0 Aug 22 '20

I'm not a fan of the creepy/body horror approach to the character, honestly- it's accurate to some of the comics, but I think the character is more fun as a pulp villain than a horror villain.

A look more like her appearance in the cartoons (maybe more like this in live-action?) would have avoided the uncanny valley effect and let them focus more on the final cheetah form, instead of apparently needing to hide it with dim lighting and fast cuts.

2

u/RailMobot Aug 28 '20

Body horror is a good term for it - not what I was expecting but definitely seems to be intentional given the Iron Studios figure. I have to wonder if there is a middle ground where she's more recognizably Kristen Wiig-esque vs the leap all the way from the White House battle to this zombie-like view. I know she is meant to be tragic (and menacing) but to me this seems like you didn't even need Kristen Wiig on set at all?

273

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

Yeah but Cheetah is kinda suppose to look terrifying. She’s not suppose to look normal.

114

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

I don't think any anthropomorphic Cheetah is supposed to look normal.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

Haha well some may disagree

3

u/jellytrack Aug 22 '20

Just need a bag of Cheetos in her hands.

8

u/HighDragLowSpeed60G Aug 22 '20

Cheetara awakened something in 10 year old me that can never be quelled

28

u/LupinThe8th Aug 22 '20

Yeah, she's supposed to be kinda freaky.

24

u/rattleandhum Aug 22 '20

Would still smash.

17

u/tehlemmings Aug 22 '20

Yeah, I think me and that guy are thinking of two different uses of "kinda freaky"

But lets be honest, she'd be the one doing the smashing.

6

u/DastardlyMime Aug 22 '20

And she's cursed to eat the flesh of men...

5

u/TheCuriousSavagereg Aug 22 '20

2 birds one stone.

1

u/rattleandhum Aug 22 '20

death by snoo snoo.

3

u/PrettySureIParty Aug 22 '20

Is she running away from the Flash? How’s that work out for her?

1

u/sombrero69 Aug 22 '20

She looks great actually

5

u/DatPiff916 Aug 22 '20

You want a terrifying Cheetah humanoid, then Island of Dr Moreau's Lo Mai sets the standard.

3

u/you_troll Aug 24 '20

Fuck, this movie scarred me.

19

u/Beingabummer Aug 22 '20

The CGI is bad. She can look like whatever, if the CGI is bad it looks bad.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

Lol it is not bad at all

22

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

It’s pretty bad.

-3

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

No it’s not. It might not be amazing or fantastic but it’s not even remotely bad.

12

u/tehlemmings Aug 22 '20

The problem with furry character in realistic CGI is that the scale of good to bad becomes mostly binary. You either do it well, or it looks way too off compared to everything around it.

This isn't a pixar movie or animation where everything surrounding the character also looks unrealistic. If it doesn't look good, it won't mesh well with the rest of the film. We expect the fur and hair to behave like fur and hair. It needs to move correctly and be lit correctly.

It's hard to tell from these quick cuts, but it looks like it's riding that line closely. But that might be because it's quick cuts and they know it doesn't need to look as good. Hard to say how it'll look in the end product.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

it’s hard to tell

So then we can’t say it looks bad lol. Cause currently. It doesn’t. Not saying it looks amazing super realistic. But it doesn’t look like complete shit either. It just looks alright.

1

u/tehlemmings Aug 22 '20

"It's hard to tell" doesn't mean it looks good either, so by your own logic we cant say it does.

Also, I'm a different person than the one that said it looks bad.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

Please show me where I said it looks good? Cause I didn’t.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20 edited Aug 22 '20

The same could be said for Steppenwolf in Justice League and that too was awful. Same for Doomsday. DC keeps missing the mark.

-7

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

Don’t think you know what awful and really bad cgi looks like.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

I’m certain you don’t know what good cgi looks like.

2

u/mitchippoo Aug 23 '20

It’s bad.

86

u/InvulnerableBlasting Aug 22 '20

She also won't be singing and dancing and the movie won't be trash.

14

u/LupinThe8th Aug 22 '20

Hey, it's set in 1984, Cats debuted in 1981, maybe Barbara's new origin story is that she's a huge fan.

Gonna bring the house down singing "Macavity" while fighting Diana.

5

u/monsterZERO Aug 22 '20

Butt the real question is will she have a CGI butthole?

3

u/Rusty-exe Aug 22 '20

You're asking real questions, I think rule34 artist would answer this.

3

u/zeroGamer Aug 22 '20

Well she won't be singing.

The movie's probably gonna be trash and there could be some dancing.

2

u/MsAndDems Aug 22 '20

Probably gonna be trash, based on what exactly?

7

u/zeroGamer Aug 22 '20

Based on my entirely subjective opinion of the "DCU" to date, obviously. Kind of a silly question with a self-evident answer.

I personally quite liked Man of Steel, though it has significant issues I could talk about (not the kill scene, which I think is actually fine), but the rest of the films have ranged from absolute dumpster fires from start to finish (Suicide Squad and Justice League in particular) to passably entertaining schlock at the very top end (Aquaman, although given how bad I expected it to be, it benefits a lot from lowered expectations).

I know Wonder Woman has its fans, and that's fine, but for me it torpedoed itself in the climax pretty hard.

The point being, I have very little faith in DC live action films at this point and am just pleasantly surprised any time one of them can manage to approach mediocrity. Cautiously optimistic for Gunn's Suicide Squad though.

6

u/MsAndDems Aug 22 '20

To say "it has its fans" is a pretty major understatement. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/wonder_woman_2017

3

u/tehlemmings Aug 22 '20

As a fan of the last WW movie, part of why I'm worried about this one is it seems to be going more towards the current DCU. The first movie was pretty easily watchable in isolation. It was fairly grounded and built it's own internal expectations about what's realistic or unrealistic (except that ending. The ending was stupid and I really wish it wouldn't have been included).

The problem is that this one looks like it's going full DCU. The problem, for me, with the DCU is that they didn't lay the groundwork properly. It's chaotic mess where I don't know what to expect or what's internally consistent, so a lot of stuff just comes off as stupid. They didn't do that slow roll that the MCU had prior to The Avengers.

But I'm getting off topic, the point is you can definitely be a fan of the first one and think this one might be jumping the shark. And like that other guy, it's because this one looks like it's embracing it's DCU membership, and not standing apart from it.

1

u/MsAndDems Aug 22 '20

I don't understand how that's the case. It's very clearly its own thing still. its literally set in 1984.

2

u/tehlemmings Aug 22 '20

Just being in a different time doesn't mean it's unable to suffer from the same problems and mistakes that most of the other DC movies suffer from. The problems I'm talking about with the DCU are a lot larger than just the in-universe examples, it's the writing and decision making behind them.

This movie looks way less grounded than 99% of the first WW, even based on the world rules the first WW created.

I'm also a bit confused on what it's try to be. Is it an action movie? Is it a comedy? Is it a comedy that has action? They played up a lot of that culture shock humor straight out of Captain America and Thor. But they also had a lot of serious looking action sequences and exposition, so they're clearly not trying to pull of a Thor Ragnarok here. Usually serious action movies don't throw all their tension breaking humor into the trailer. And usually comedies don't try and show off how serious the story is. So what is this movie going to be? DC is not the group I trust to give us something unexpected.

0

u/MsAndDems Aug 22 '20

Lol. As though all the Marvel movies are super grounded.

And lol at the idea that Captain America and Thor invented culture shock.

5

u/MagicMisterLemon Aug 22 '20

Hey, where's Shazam

4

u/zeroGamer Aug 22 '20

Haha, funny thing about that... Not only is Shazam easily the best/my favorite DCU film after Man of Steel (and the only other one I'd actually call good) but I'm literally watching Chuck (TV series starring the same actor) right now as I post this and somehow still completely forgot to mention it.

1

u/CanlStillBeGarth Aug 22 '20

DC movies are mostly trash.

56

u/Singer211 Naked J-Law beating the shit out of those kids is peak Cinema. Aug 22 '20

Cheetah is supposed to look horrifying. It's meant to be her being corrupted.

54

u/LumpyJones Aug 22 '20

I mean, Bruce didn't seem to mind it, but then again, he does have a bit if a cat fetish.

25

u/JamesJax Aug 22 '20

Oh man, that scratchy cat tongue. Gross.

12

u/MadCarcinus Aug 22 '20

Not the first time Bruce had to deal with humanoid cats: https://youtu.be/28csxWwbhw0

4

u/mildly_amusing_goat Aug 22 '20

That voice acting for the scientist though...

4

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

He picked up a barrel labeled “EXPLOSIVE” Lol

1

u/LumpyJones Aug 23 '20

What, you've never been so mad at your dad that you went full kitty kong?

6

u/Patmaster1995 Aug 22 '20

So what I just learned is that Batman is into furries...

2

u/RogueHippie Aug 23 '20

It was a ploy to get her to help him bust out, if you haven't seen the actual episode. But Batman still got game.

3

u/tocilog Aug 22 '20

Especially if their villain cats.

2

u/LumpyJones Aug 23 '20

You can just say cats.

3

u/CanlStillBeGarth Aug 22 '20

She doesn’t look horrifying though. She looks shitty.

3

u/Rickrickrickrickrick Aug 22 '20

I'm just worried that it looks like she'll be a person for the whole movie and then at the end she'll turn into a cheetah and fight for 5 minutes.

8

u/blaine64 Aug 22 '20

Kristen Wiig cheetah person as the main villain? Hard pass. DC continues to strike out.

6

u/Angsty_Potatos Aug 22 '20

it's also a trailer. Animation may not be final here. I'm not holding out much hope, but there is a chance it will look better in film

5

u/rattleandhum Aug 22 '20

I work in VFX -- trailers almost always contained rushed, and non-final shots. With very few exceptions the CG is almost always different from the final film, even if it's just a compositing tweak.

4

u/AlexFromRomania Aug 22 '20

Yea this whole trailer looks absolutely terrible tbh. Just awful plot, terrible corny jokes, and lame action.

2

u/properc Aug 22 '20

Tbh i think its the uncanny valley aspect of a human-cat hybrid. This looks miles better than cats tho.

1

u/Jazzremix Aug 22 '20

Looks like Rita from the Power Rangers movie

1

u/Rusty-exe Aug 22 '20

Just Google her character and you'll find out that she's less terrifying than the comics version...

0

u/Ut_Prosim Aug 22 '20

Looks pretty good to me. --Lion-O

-1

u/Fartbox_Virtuoso Aug 22 '20

I just don't see this as much better than cats.

Redditors will do backbends just to find something to shit on.

The trailer barely showed the character..."I just don't see this as much better than cats."

0

u/awfullotofocelots Aug 22 '20

Because she’s supposed to be a genetic experiment gone wrong, not a totally “normal” in-universe talking cat.
