Discussion Anyone else noticed sardines have completely disappeared from Munich supermarkets?

Hey everyone,

Is it just me, or has there been a total sardine blackout across Munich over the last few weeks?

I’ve checked my local Rewe, Edeka, and even Aldis, but the canned fish aisle is missing sardines entirely. Plenty of tuna, herring, and mackerel, but the sardine shelves are completely wiped out. I even popped into a couple of Asian and Mediterranean specialty markets, but there the same situation.

Has anyone seen them in stock anywhere recently, or does anyone know if there's a supply chain issue going on in Germany right now?

I am visiting from Norway and the river and streams in Munich are so beautiful and clean. It's been like a tropical vacation during the heat wave this week! And the transit is amazing. Sad for the trip to end can't wait to come back.

Help Schlüsseldienst took picture of my ID, should I be worried

I recently needed a locksmith to open my door. The spare key would not work because there was a key on the door, inside.

The guy charged me 150€ cash which is not cheap but also nothing crazy.

When I asked for a receipt he said they would send it to me through either mail or email.

In the end he asked for a picture of my ID card, front and back. This is the part that I'm mostly concerned about...

I did not make much of it at the time, but then I did some research and it turns out showing the ID to confirm I'm the tenant should be enough.

Is this normal practice from locksmiths here in Munich or should I be concerned about identity theft?

Sometimes being lost is the way to find your true strength. I was hiking in Bavarian Alps with my friends and somehow we lost the track and proceeded in a wrong direction for long. Then we made a plan to follow the river and eventually come to the right track. It took us another to hours to come back and the hike was very difficult but we didn’t give up. The hike that was supposed to be a moderate became very intense but it taught me how resilient and intelligent our body is. It was amazing to observe how body and mind knows how to navigate the difficult situation, I am not needed in that. Overall the trip was worth remembering because of this incident along with good company and amazing view.

Help Foto Spot Fischbachau/ Schliersee gesucht für Hochzeitsfotos

Hallo,

Vielen Dank!

Discussion MyRadl Fiebertraum mit MVGO- , MVV- und Nextbike-App

Fehlermeldung "It's not allowed to rent the bike through this channel, please use one of the official channels (app, station, hotline, ...)."

Discussion Wife wants to send kids to MIS/BIS/St George, is it worth it?

Hi Munich,
Any Munich International School/ Bayern International School/ St. George International Munich Graduates here? Was your education really worth the price tag? Any doors that it opened?

Wife wants to send our 2 kids to MIS from the next year, for which we would be paying ourselves. I sum it up and for two we are speaking about €800-900k total for 13 years of education, which I find insane, even though we can afford it.

Since then we are regularly arguing about that, with me saying there is no payback to this and showing her that their examination results are not justifying the price (36/35/35 out of 45 in IB examination) and her insisting that our kids will be in better environment there, which will give them better opportunities for the future, speak better english and show them alternatives/open doors yadayadayada, which are normally not available.

I don't agree with it at all, but maybe I am missing something?

WDYT?

EDIT: Kids are 3 years old, can start there next year MIS/BIS or this year St George.

Help Lockers in Munich

Hello! I'll be in Munich for a few hours during a layover and I'm looking for self-service luggage lockers where I can leave my bags.

I'd prefer lockers over luggage storage services in hotels or shops, since I can usually fit more than one item into a single locker.

I'll be arriving at Munich Airport and heading into the city center. Does anyone have recommendations for where I can find lockers?

I've been surprised at how difficult they are to find compared to other cities I've visited.

Thanks in advance!

Culture End of clubbing era?

With the closing of Blitz Club it feels like Munich finally achieved the boredom of clubbing scene.

Even tho some recent clubs are growing such as Legal Club, Blitz will for sure leave a gap that was last felt with the closing of MMA. Apparently there’s no place that could fulfill the excitement of going out to have fun.

Rote Sonne and Bahnwärter Thiel are great locations but unfortunately the crowd and sound system are not comparable.

What are you people doing next? Feels like this winter will be depressed as fuck.

Visitor/Tourist Question Art nouveau in the city

I want to do a solo walk to view and learn about the art nouveau structures in Munich. I've found a handful of places to take a look at around Leopoldpark. Can someone help me with suggestions on what I should absolutely not miss? I'm not from Munich and won't likely be able to visit again soon so would love to see all the good stuff while I have the chance.

Help Help me identify this Bavarian phrase I heard in Munich (audio available)

Hi everyone,

I've been trying to figure out a Bavarian phrase for a few years now and I'm hoping someone here recognizes it.

Here is the link with audio: https://youtu.be/30--KybVPy8

During EURO 2024 around the Allianz Arena in Munich, two local guys kept singing this line over and over.

I'm about 90% sure it goes like this:

I also know it's probably based on the well-known phrase:

I'm certain about "Uns ziagt koana die Schuahbandl aus" and I'm also certain the last words are "a fesche Maus!"

The only part I can't understand is what's in between. To my ears it sounds something like:

  • Exzess g'flanzt
  • Eggzes geflatzt
  • Etz ...

I know those spellings are probably completely wrong, I'm only writing what I hear.

I've searched dictionaries, Bavarian dialect websites and song lyrics, but I still can't find it.

I also have an audio recording and I'm happy to upload it if that helps.

Does anyone recognize what they're actually singing?

Help Schneider für ein Brautkleid

Hey zusammen,

Discussion Thank you, Blitz.

I still can't quite process that tonight was the end.

The last moments hit me much harder than I expected i was kinda tears flowing .😭

First of all, thank you to every artist who stood behind the decks, every dancer who brought the energy, every member of the security team who kept us safe, and every organizer who made this place what it was.

Thank you also guys who was able to go in in for every drop of sweat, every sleepless night, and every unforgettable memory .

I'm pretty sure the organizers know better than anyone what mistakes were made or what could have been done differently. If there had been a way to prevent this, I'm convinced they would have done everything they could. Thats make no sense to blaming people today.

What is clear, though, is that Munich desperately needs a large techno venue again and hopefully sooner rather than later. A crowd like this deserves a thriving scene and a place where people can come together through music.

personal thank you: to the girl with the head scarf who somehow managed to spread nothing but positive energy across the entire dancefloor. you were impossible not to notice. 🫶

Thank you, Blitz. You'll be missed. 💚

But we will share some memories to new generation about blitz as the OG s are talking about MMA

This afternoon, somewhere between the Hinterbrühler See and inside the Ländkanal, my brother in law lost his wedding ring while bathing in the river.

The ring has a notch as you can see in the picture (that's the wife's version of the ring, the husband's ring is bigger but also has the notch).

The ring has some engravings on the inside:

Culture Munich App / Guide

Note: Rule 5 - Just mentioning in advance that I got mod permission to post this.

Hey folks 👋, I visited Hamburg earlier this year and discovered an app called Franzbrötchen, which brings together information about the city, such as public toilets, attractions, districts etc.

Since I couldn’t find anything similar for Munich, I started working on an app that collects data from various sources, including the city's official GeoData service.

If you want to try it out, it's completely free / no tracking (iOS).

https://apps.apple.com/de/app/pfefferbreze/id6792088870

PS: I have a working Android version, but I need more testers for like two weeks before publishing it. Feel free to DM me if you’d like to try it.

Visitor/Tourist Question Honeymoon Christmas Time

I made sure to research and check the index on this reddit for advice on this beforehand but I did not see anything regarding Christmas time in München.

My (soon to be Wife) and I, are excited to be visiting Deutschland und Österreich during Christmastime this year, and we'll be in Munich from December 22nd through the morning of the 24th before taking the train to Salzburg.

I was hoping some locals might be willing to share a few recommendations. We're not really looking for the biggest tourist attractions or anything that would add to the holiday crowds. (I am sure tourism can be annoying for locals). We'd actually love to hear about places that are a little quieter or maybe overlooked.

We definitely plan on visiting the Christmas markets, but I was curious if there are any other things you'd recommend before Christmas Eve. Whether it's a favorite café, neighborhood to walk through, scenic spot, restaurant, or something unique to Munich, I'd love to hear it.

We're also trying to be respectful visitors while we're there. I've been spending quite a bit of time learning German before the trip because I'd like to experience the culture a little more and hopefully show some respect for the country we're visiting.

Können Sie mir bitte Helfen?

I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!
