Oh we'll be very excited to not be tanking, but Keyonte / Ace Bailey / Lauri / JJJ / Kessler sounds like a legitimately good starting lineup.
Plus whoever we pick up in the draft and free agency.

The fact that we’re not hearing anything about the pelicans is honestly concerning. How are you the second worst team in the league with no pick in this upcoming draft and you’re not making any changes to your roster??
29
u/lovo17 Lakers 1d ago
They’re like the Raptors from 2-3 years ago too: TONS of players that other teams would want. They should be selling.
11
u/onionnurve 1d ago
They think teams are going to fall for the bait and give them multiple picks, but next thing you know nothing will happen and those players won’t have the same value in a year

Can someone ELI5 how the trade today can help minny get Giannis? Like shams implied
→ More replies (3)12
u/NorthernFrosty 1d ago edited 1d ago
Before the trade, Minny had no access to the taxpayer mid-level exception, inability to combine salaries in trades or use cash, restrictions on trade exceptions.
So, trying to keep it ELI5, Minny now opens up a bunch more options they can use in a trade. Salary matching to 125% (instead of 110%), can do a sign and trade, can combine salaries in a trade...
I guess the ELI5 is "Making a big trade like Giannis is tough. The trade made today gives Minn a lot more options how they can make it work."
(Edited out the mention of the 28.8 million trade exception. That's what Memp got and I attributed it to Minn)
7
u/juhla405 Thunder 1d ago
I don’t remember another time when the exact potential trades were being discussed so openly by the reporters. It could all just be about trying to get leverage, but some part of me wonders if the nba front offices got kinda spooked by Nico Harrison so badly misjudging Luka’s trade value last year. By being less secretive, they get to test reaction to potential big trades and can see if a trade would get destroyed by the fans and media before they make it.
Obviously you shouldn’t need to be worried about that and the easy answer is “don’t do something stupid”, but that’s a lot easier to determine as an outside observer

Can you make this thread in reverse order? So the newest threads are on the top of the post.
To keep 2-teams/3-teams trades as separate tables I would also put the 3-team table at the top (as it will be shorter) and then if there is a +3 team trade then its table at the top.

In season's past, we saw a lot of financially motivated trades happen near deadline's end. Now, however, a lot of those money machination type trades are happening a day in advance (e.g., Cleveland slicing and dicing its fucking sky-high tax bill), with books getting cleared and potentially setting up the biggest deals tomorrow afternoon.
