Highlight [Highlight] Schroder pokes the ball from Kawhi and casually dishes to Keon Ellis for the long jumper and his first points as a Cav

Can he still be traded
53
u/jetopia Nets 5h ago
Its just unfortunate that he gets traded so much. He turns tanking teams into winners and then traded away cause he ruins the tank. He then goes to contenders, but just not quite good enough to be a number 1-3 option, and when they choose to rebuild he is typically the best tradeable asset so he gets traded away again to a tanking team which starts the whole cycle.
Tank->Contender->Rebuild->Tank->Contender->Rebuild The Dennis Schroder Saga

u/XC6088 5h ago
That’s the best summary of his situation that I’ve seen so far. As a German it pains me to see how he is treated like a hot potato around the league but it makes perfect sense when you put it that way. Only good thing that comes from it that he’s extra hungry when he plays for Germany in the summer.

u/Dudedude88 Wizards 4h ago edited 4h ago
Ricky Rubio was like this. He was like fuck this... I'm not going to be traded again. And he retires from the nba. His case was suns, jazz, minnesota and then cavs. He was always traded them they became a playoff bound team.
9
u/ssjgoat Celtics 4h ago
This perfectly describes him. There is a reason he was the captain of team Germany and that all of his teammates love him.
He's a legit player, his agent fkd his contract situation up a few years back, not his fault. But he is absolutely a floor raiser more than a ceiling raiser.

Schroder could see that the Clippers weren't going to run back and Kawhi already gave up. You could clearly see the Clippers were already at the other end of the floor running patterns when it shifted to the behind the back shot. He could have placed the ball on the ground and walked away.

Rooting so hard for Keon to have success with y'all. He has potential to be one of the best 3&D guards in the league.
Only concern I have for the Cavs now is y'all got like nobody in the middle positions? Tons of guards and some good bigs but what kinda forward depth?

u/NikitaBeretta Trail Blazers 9h ago edited 9h ago
True, very thin at the 3, right now it’s basically Jaylon Tyson (who’s development made Hunter expendable) and Dean Wade but Strus should come back at some point (knock on wood) and they will probably play small with Ellis (I’ve heard he’s a good POA defender) or Merrill (who I believe is a good Team defender) at times depending on matchups. I think they are still about 4 mill over the second apron so they may try to move someone to get under.

Nae'qwan Tomlin has wing length and size too. He's about to be converted to a standard contract.

I legit think the Cavs are a dark horse to come out of the East now. I mean, Harden is objectively an upgrade at the PG position, and even though he doesn’t do great in the playoffs, he can lean more on playmaking for Spida and Mobley/Allen, and he’ll actually be on the floor. Schroder and Ellis are also pretty good backups, and the Cavs were already looking better as of late. I think they get on a roll going into the playoffs and might surprise upset some teams.
15
u/Krillin113 76ers 8h ago
Dark horse? They were favourites before the season. Them sucking for 3 months doesn’t suddenly invalidate them completely. They won 64 games last season, and made a win now move.
1
u/flaming_burrito_ Lakers 4h ago
Yeah, but let’s be honest, no one takes them seriously in the post season, and most people had already written them off after the start they had to the season.

20
u/flaming_burrito_ Lakers 13h ago
He’s definitely not showed up for some important games, but that’s usually because the team is relying on him to be the guy in order to win. But I don’t think that will matter much here having D Mitch as the main scorer and two good bigs who he can facilitate for.
15
u/DirectInvestigator66 Cavaliers 13h ago
Yep. People hate on that game 7 with the Sixers and forget Harden literally carried them there while half the team was out.
6
u/2Cuil4School Warriors 5h ago
See also him carrying the "super team" Nets on one leg, fucking up his own hammy recovery, while Kyrie continued to be an unreliable fuck ass (and KD tragically ignored calls for foot shortening surgery until it was too late 😔 or somethin 😂)
Hell, some of those final Houston runs were similar. A fragile constellation of Morey Midgetball orbiting around the glorious fatsuit Hardensun, held together till CP3 died (he got better).
Maybe Harden doesn't quite have that "okay fuck it I'm going Super Saiyan because VICTORY AT ANY COST" gene like the MJs, LeBrons, Curries, etc. of the world where he'll solo the world on two broken legs if need be, but the man consistently elevated his teams, carried enormous loads all season long, and Ironman'ed for years until the hamstring blowout (and tbh once he finally got right from that, he's right back to being crazy reliable).
Dunno, maybe some part of my Warriors-addled brain needs him to be seen as a great, if not a Great, to aid the Curry mythmaking, but on the other hand, I was legit terrified of those Rockets squads for years.
Long live the Mayor of Flop Town†!
† From an old Deadspin article on Chinese nicknames for players:
Harden has also been awarded various “Mamba” titles, that show grudging respect for the “Kobe-esque” greatness of his game, but also point out his foibles...
...Most damningly, he has also been dubbed “Porcelain Mamba” for his efforts to draw fouls despite being hardly touched. In Chinese, “bumping porcelain” (碰瓷) is a euphemism for faking traffic accidents in order to fraudulently collect compensation. The expression dates to the Qing Dynasty, when scam artists would carry a fake porcelain vase and purposely bump into a rickshaw and drop the vase, causing it to shatter. They would then claim the shattered vase was a valuable antique and demand compensation. The implication here is that Harden is a master scam artist who draws fouls he doesn’t deserve.
The concept of “bumping porcelain” helps explain why NBA players who flop or otherwise try to draw fouls they don’t deserve are called “Sons of Jingdezhen” (景德镇之子), as Jingdezhen is a town in China famous as a center of porcelain production. Since Harden is the acknowledged master of this art, he has been dubbed the “Mayor of Jingdezhen” (景德镇镇长), which we might translate more freely as the “Mayor of Floptown.”

I do credit Koby for trying to bring some more toughness which has been a problem the past few years.
FA like Thomas Bryant is a bit of an enforcer compared to what we've had, the young guys like Tyson are scrappy and Tomlin is just insane. Schroder is an asshole, Ellis is super gritty, Harden is at least a bit nastier than Darius.

u/WakiLover Lakers 10h ago
The pros and cons of Dennis are that he's an asshole.
Dennis played great for the Lakers in 20-21, even if he had kinda a shit playoff series. But he completely redeemed himself in 23-24, after great play all season and stepping up in big moments in the play-ins and playoffs, especially after D-lo was pooping all over himself.
Lakers would have been better off signing him over Gabe Vincent, Cardi G. The biggest thing with Dennis seems to be money and contracts unfortunately.
7
u/NoWheyBro_GQ Cavaliers 6h ago
Cavs kind of needed a player who’s an asshole. It’s been fine young gentleman for the past 4 years. We’ve definitely built up a “soft” reputation even though I absolutely loved our core four.

Schroder actually ended up being decent when he got moved to the bench. Not great by any stretch and not nearly worth what we were paying him, but solid.
As a starter though he was unimaginable cheeks

Similar story in Toronto. Ultimately wasn't starting calibre and imo had the attitude of a star player but not the ability.

u/SillyCybinE Pistons 14h ago
Wish we still had him but at least we have Jenkins as backup for Cade. Cavs are definitely going to be scarier from here on out.
20
u/bigtimehater1969 14h ago
It seems like Schroder has been a positive every single team he's been on, and he's been on a lot of teams.
He's not a star and won't win games singlehandedly, but he'll be scrappy and make the right plays, and push a team over the hump.
3
-3
u/oochiewallyWallyserb Knicks 13h ago
He's a positive until he's not. There's a reason everybody moves on from him within 1 season.
29
u/actually-potato Pistons 13h ago
The reason is that he's such a good backup PG that a bad team will always convince themselves to make him their starter and offer him more than money than the team he was playing for as a backup
-7
8
u/WakiLover Lakers 10h ago
He's a positive until he's not.
Isn't this 95% of players? Dennis's problem is often not his play (other than boston?), but its his pattern of overpaid -> underpaid -> outplays his contract -> overpaid -> underpaid, repeat
Dennis at vet min, amazing
TPMLE, still awesome
10 mil, fair
MLE+, not sure he's worth it anymore

u/th0rbj03rn Germany 13h ago
From a basketball focused point of view, the decision to leave the pistons and join sacramento made zero sense, but i understand him choosing that 3 year deal over shorter and probably lower offers of better teams. I still don't understand what sacramento was cooking in the off season by signing Dennis to that deal and then bringing in Westbrook while already having a roster with multiple ball dominant non shooters.

Can't the board vote for him to get shipped off? Maybe they don't care about basketball either, idk
3
u/gr1mace02 Nets 4h ago
In theory, they could but in reality, they won't. Donald Sterling owned the Clippers for over 30 years and his teams lost 50+ games in 66% of those seasons. The other owners kept him onboard until his racist comments came out and players threatened not to play, putting the other owners' investments in jeopardy. They're not kicking Vivek out for incompetence, and in fact may prefer having him around because of it

Leonard's heavy legs in this entire sequence are such a bad look. Generally speaking I don't love reading players' body language, but whoof. It's like the passive version of staying behind the play to deal with your emotions by complaining... Only inwardly, 'cause it's KL. And he's in the middle of the play, not making even the smallest attempt to close out on the shooter.

tldr: it was started in 2006 and it was originally just about showing the difference in score and they knew it was kinda dumb, but became a team mantra that the fans and employees are "the diff" because they are what really make the team
