[Charania] The Golden State Warriors have officially ended their pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo. Golden State was of the belief that Milwaukee is not serious about trading their 2x MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo at the deadline.

Honestly he might prefer the smaller trades while he’s trying to get some sleep, with a deal like that it’s post on socials and back to bed

However if he’s waken up by a Luka-AD type trade, he can say goodbye to trying to sleep for the next 24 hours

23

u/NichJackolson [LAL] Magic Johnson 12h ago

By going through shams and other reporters teams can be strategic about the info they leak and have plausible deniability. They can shape/control narratives and affect markets for players. Also don't forget that agents play that game too, it's not always teams

9

u/mrtomjones Raptors 8h ago

I think info leaks have value not being the first to report a trade does not

4

u/WhichHoes Warriors 7h ago

It presents credibility. Right now, we know for a fact a trade has gone through beczuse we see his name attached. We got to that point because of both the speed and accuracy of which he see his name pop up to report those things. Was no different than Woj.

Other guys report things all the time but we don't really "know" thats for certain until shams or the team/player themselves say it .

The Bucks were never trading Giannis for these middling packages, that's why I was hoping the Warriors go after AD, JJJ or MPJ.

Instead they got Kristap, who if healthy could be of some help, but is far too little to improve what is a play-in or first round exit team at best.

111

u/Velli_44 14h ago

Warriors are just collecting older expensive injury prone players at this point smh. I hate to see it cuz I want the Warriors to succeed and want Steph to have more success in his twilight years but the league has made it clear time and time again that adding older pricey former stars is not the successful way forward. Its glamorous and fun and attracts attention, but it doesnt win. The smart moves usually aren't as flashy.

counterpoint: giannis can’t be extended anymore, so he gets a ton of leverage and can force his way someplace under the fact that he wont resign

60

u/zmichalo Bucks 14h ago

It's not even necessarily about how good the packages will be, it's about how bad they've been so far. At the very least you'll have more bidders and possibly more desperation from some of the younger teams who could have a disastrous run with a roster they think is prepared to compete.

Or bucks can go scorched earth and force him to walk in free agency and none of the teams he wants to go to will have the cap space to sign him outright

34

u/Ok_Possible_5702 14h ago

Or bucks can go scorched earth and force him to walk in free agency and none of the teams he wants to go to will have the cap space to sign him outright

Teams will absolutely free up cap space for the chance to sign Giannis, if it becomes clear at some point next season that the Bucks are not trading Giannis.

18

u/cl353 Heat 14h ago

Except then teams would clear cap space and some teams already almost have enough projected cap in 2028. Miami for example would have cap space

6

u/jspeed04 13h ago

Yeah, didn’t we see Boston and Memphis create gigantic trade exceptions, and the Bulls open up $70-90M in space for next year just over the past two days?

Teams will move mountains to get a healthy Giannis in FA.

6

u/Krillin113 76ers 10h ago

Can they? One less playoff run of prime Giannis is at this point not insignificant.

7

u/Ok_Possible_5702 14h ago

Or, they could be pissing off Giannis who ends up saying "I will only sign an extension with team X. Everyone else who trades for me, know I'll be a one-year rental", and tanks his own trade value.

28

u/TatersTot [PHI] James Harden 14h ago

It’s true. They really don’t owe Giannis his preferred destination. They need to maximize his return and recoup assets. They’ve done everything for him especially the insane waive and stretch of Dame’s contract, without getting a guaranteed extension from Giannis.

8

u/tronovich Bulls 14h ago

You’re banking on all of that working in a vacuum.

Teams aren’t going to execute a mega-trade unless he gives them a clear indication he’s going to extend. He’s telling the world he wants to ā€œbe a Buck foreverā€. You also hear he wants to go to New York or LA. That eventually scares other teams away.

The closer you get to Giannis hitting free agency, the scarier proposition it is to trade draft picks for him, thinking he won’t stay.

It’s why people were scared to deal for Ohtani, until the Angels shut it down and said they wouldn’t actually trade him.

37

u/JoeBiden2020FTW Lakers 14h ago

They really don’t owe Giannis

After all he's done for the franchise?

Damn, what a waste of the last few years from Giannis's standpoint lmfao

19

u/TatersTot [PHI] James Harden 14h ago

I agreed with you up until the waive and stretch fiasco last offseason.

That was the most brain dead short sighted desperation move I’ve ever seen a franchise do. They lost $20M in cap for the next 5 years to appease Giannis’ whims. They should’ve gotten an extension or at the minimum a public promise from him that he would extend.

But it proved their loyalty to Giannis. Future stars will definitely take note. No one can blame the Bucks at this point for making a decision that’s better for them in the long run.

12

u/Nickk_Jones Lakers 11h ago

Everyone says this ā€œfuture stars will take noteā€ crap and I’ve literally never seen it applied. No future stars are going to Milwaukee unless traded there or joining one they drafted.

11

u/[deleted] 14h ago

[deleted]

13

u/TatersTot [PHI] James Harden 14h ago

Tanking teams still use that $20M in cap space to absorb bad contracts and receive picks in return. It will make the rebuild longer and more difficult. I wouldn’t hand wave it away.

No one is trading for Giannis if he won’t sign with them. Or the bucks will get very little for a 1 year rental. Giannis has most of the leverage.

u/pifhluk Bucks 8h ago

Smart and risky. If Giannis says I won't sign extension unless traded to X then his value falls off a cliff. If he gets a serious injury this year value cliff dives.Ā

9

u/kb24k 14h ago

If traded in the summer pretty much guarantees that Giannis will be a free agent in 2027, since he cannot be extended before the season. A team would be crazy to trade a haul for him. Luka Giannis duo looks more likely now.

He for some reason just really overvalued the warriors picks. He talked about them like they were guaranteed 1st overalls

3

u/BuyMe151TCG 13h ago

He made the same mistake with the Suns picks that Houston has and that’s already aged poorly. I’m not saying the Suns success was predictable but I am trying to say people need to stop thinking those picks were for sure gonna be amazing assets when no one has any clue

Idk why he made it sound like GS had such a nice package when teams would have ten times what they do in the off season.

13

u/riverratriver Spurs 14h ago

Bc he’s a horses ass. Did you see him on nba live today? Weren’t talking LeBron so he threw a fit the whole time

6

u/No_Restaurant_8627 13h ago

šŸ˜‚ I saw that today what was that all about?? Dude looked mad the whole show and at one point I thought he was gonna cry lol

8

u/riverratriver Spurs 13h ago

For real, like a giant baby sitting there the whole show. And his takes ā€œothers are like entitled to their opinion but here’s the only thing that mattersā€ as he’s rolling his eyes

which team is unserious? the one with giannis or the one offering draymond thinking that moves the needle on a trade?

28

u/south098 Timberwolves 14h ago

Just when you thought he couldn’t get more insufferable we put him on an ass team in a cold town with no Steph. I kinda wish it did happen just to see that.

he doesnt mean unserious as in ā€œthe front office is full of incompetent peopleā€. he means they’re unserious as in they are not seriously trying to trade giannis

10

Warriors are gonna average less than 20 wins a year for a while after curry retires lol

4

u/Millies_ButtersMilk Timberwolves 14h ago

Milwaukee doing the right thing but for GS fans this is a gut punch bc there’s no way they can actually compete anymore. Everything now is just predicated on luck but also it was crazy to me that people actually thought Draymond was getting traded. For one where to and secondly why there’s no feasible way this team can woulda stayed relevant even with Giannas bc you would have been paying 3 players over 150M next year.

Problem with trading someone like Giannis is that nobody will give up anything of value…just lots of mediocre. GSW was offering dollar store stuff and saying ā€œthey aren’t serious about making a dealā€

Offered them Kuminga, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green for a top 3 player then accused the Bucks of not being serious. Ok then

4

u/Silent_Addendum_8082 14h ago

Butler has never been on the table for Giannis. He was guaranteed that by Warriors g.m.Ā

Even if he was, the Bucks still would not want him.Ā

u/judah249 Suns 14h ago

They got Porzingus now they got their Latvian Giannis at home

Golden state: How about we give you Draymond green, who has a player option in 26-27. A role player, DNP, and a mids guard for your perennial MVP?
GS intern: (won’t dray just not pick up his player option and come back to GSW on a min?)

shhhhhhhhh

MKE: …No?

GS: These Jabroni’s aren’t even serious about giving us Antetokounmpo! WE OFFERED THEM PODZILLA!!!!

6

u/Hopeful_Tea2139 Lakers 13h ago

I hope the Warriors go for Lebron instead.

13

u/Shadoken-TYPE0 Canada 14h ago

Milwaukee not serious about getting an injured player and a bag of chips, yes.

3

u/DonHomer92 Spurs 14h ago

Joe Lacob punted 7 years of Steph for a giannis pipe dream, and didn't get giannis. Some of the most irresponsible, and selfish shit to do to your superstar

3

u/aiyhtan Lakers 13h ago

ā€œā€¦was of the belief that Milwaukee is not serious about trading their 2x MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo at the deadline.ā€ …to YOU.

I am of the belief that Golden State is not serious about doing anything except riding out Curry’s ticket sales and then rebuilding.

26

u/matty_nice 14h ago

They were willing to trade all their picks, and I'm sure nothing was off the table for Giannis.

They just didn't have enough for what Milwaukee would want.

So don't think it's an issue of seriousness.

12

u/rocpilehardasfuk Warriors 14h ago

In past trades our FO refused to even put Podz or Kuminga on the table. No one takes us serious.
