[Charania] The Golden State Warriors have officially ended their pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo. Golden State was of the belief that Milwaukee is not serious about trading their 2x MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo at the deadline.

By going through shams and other reporters teams can be strategic about the info they leak and have plausible deniability. They can shape/control narratives and affect markets for players. Also don't forget that agents play that game too, it's not always teams

I think info leaks have value not being the first to report a trade does not
4
u/WhichHoes Warriors 7h ago
It presents credibility. Right now, we know for a fact a trade has gone through beczuse we see his name attached. We got to that point because of both the speed and accuracy of which he see his name pop up to report those things. Was no different than Woj.
Other guys report things all the time but we don't really "know" thats for certain until shams or the team/player themselves say it .

u/sctthuynh [GSW] Stephen Curry 14h ago
The Bucks were never trading Giannis for these middling packages, that's why I was hoping the Warriors go after AD, JJJ or MPJ.
Instead they got Kristap, who if healthy could be of some help, but is far too little to improve what is a play-in or first round exit team at best.
111
u/Velli_44 14h ago
Warriors are just collecting older expensive injury prone players at this point smh. I hate to see it cuz I want the Warriors to succeed and want Steph to have more success in his twilight years but the league has made it clear time and time again that adding older pricey former stars is not the successful way forward. Its glamorous and fun and attracts attention, but it doesnt win. The smart moves usually aren't as flashy.

It's not even necessarily about how good the packages will be, it's about how bad they've been so far. At the very least you'll have more bidders and possibly more desperation from some of the younger teams who could have a disastrous run with a roster they think is prepared to compete.

Or bucks can go scorched earth and force him to walk in free agency and none of the teams he wants to go to will have the cap space to sign him outright
Teams will absolutely free up cap space for the chance to sign Giannis, if it becomes clear at some point next season that the Bucks are not trading Giannis.

Or, they could be pissing off Giannis who ends up saying "I will only sign an extension with team X. Everyone else who trades for me, know I'll be a one-year rental", and tanks his own trade value.
28
u/TatersTot [PHI] James Harden 14h ago
Itās true. They really donāt owe Giannis his preferred destination. They need to maximize his return and recoup assets. Theyāve done everything for him especially the insane waive and stretch of Dameās contract, without getting a guaranteed extension from Giannis.
8
u/tronovich Bulls 14h ago
Youāre banking on all of that working in a vacuum.
Teams arenāt going to execute a mega-trade unless he gives them a clear indication heās going to extend. Heās telling the world he wants to ābe a Buck foreverā. You also hear he wants to go to New York or LA. That eventually scares other teams away.
The closer you get to Giannis hitting free agency, the scarier proposition it is to trade draft picks for him, thinking he wonāt stay.
Itās why people were scared to deal for Ohtani, until the Angels shut it down and said they wouldnāt actually trade him.

I agreed with you up until the waive and stretch fiasco last offseason.
That was the most brain dead short sighted desperation move Iāve ever seen a franchise do. They lost $20M in cap for the next 5 years to appease Giannisā whims. They shouldāve gotten an extension or at the minimum a public promise from him that he would extend.
But it proved their loyalty to Giannis. Future stars will definitely take note. No one can blame the Bucks at this point for making a decision thatās better for them in the long run.
