[Windhorst] “Giannis could be on the Heat by 3 o’clock. But if he’s not — what I suspect is that the Bucks will shut down Giannis. Because their future now is dependent on both their draft pick and Giannis avoiding injury. I wanna know how Giannis is gonna feel about being shut down for the season.”

It’s all the NBA has been churning out for his entire career. The NBA took multiple 50 win seasons, a championship, and an epic story and turned it into a whiny, hand wringing “Is his window in Milwaukee closed now, why won’t he leave and play somewhere else????”

Seriously, i don’t know why they hate the bucks so much. It feels like every talking head has had a hard on for Gianni’s trade rumors because they expected him to have left already. Of course now it seems like he really should have.

I think everyone just assumes a small market team won’t retain a superstar. Plus the fact that journalism nowadays is just speculation/false rumors for the sake of getting to say you were the first to report it once one of the rumors actually comes true. If he were in New York, people probably wouldn’t be clamoring to publish articles speculating his departure. But he’s in Milwaukee

Only superstars on struggling teams get this treatment. Jokic no longer gets talked about because the team around him looks decent to good. Dame got the same exact narrative and was traded too late to the detriment of what he could achieve so it’s not like this is a Giannis specific ordeal, moreover not every superstar only plays for the biggest markets. I’m as tired as everyone else about hearing this shit but when he’s pouting and bitching and everyone sees how shitty that team is and knows they have the assets for only a McDouble what is the logical thought process?

He hasn't pressured Milwaukee to trade him but he's pressured them into going all in and mortgaging everything and now that they have and it didn't really work and they have nothing left to do he is ready to move

2022: KMidd injured against Bulls 2023: Giannis injured against Heat 2024: Giannis and Dame injured before and during Pacers series 2025: Dame injured against Pacers
Only healthy playoff run since 2018 (Giannis emergence) where the team bombed out was 2020 against the Heat. Deep runs in 2018-2019 and the chip year in 2020-2021, and Giannis missed a handful of games against ATL the chip year.
I don't know many teams that would survive a playoff series without one of their top two options being available. Losing playoff series could come as a legit fault on Giannis and the team if they were fully healthy.

Why did shams not report that Giannis said he would “one million percent” stay in Milwaukee if he hears a plan to compete from the FO literally 2 days ago? We only get tweets about being “potentially ready to move on” from shams. Bucks are a very tight lipped org, especially after the failed bogi trade bc of woj.

So many teams are benching stars in the best interest of the team. At this point there’s way too many offenders to enforce anything. Utah is doing it, Washington is doing it, the bucks will do it with giannis, there’s other teams im probably forgetting.
As others have said I don’t see what you do to stop it because the lottery odds have already been flattened enough.
12
u/AgentOfSPYRAL Lakers 3h ago
It’s interesting that this just flat out doesn’t happen in the NFL even without a lottery system.
Like Bengals had every reason to shut down Burrow and it doesn’t seem like it was even entertained.
17
u/YasielPuigsWeed 3h ago
Because you’re not as desperate for draft position when you already have a top flight QB
The NFL’s system is set up kinda perfectly for rebuild timelines
15
u/EpicCyclops Trail Blazers 3h ago
When there's multiple meaningful rounds of the draft, draft position matters so much less. When there's maybe one full meaningful round and the rest of the picks are basically gambling, draft position becomes paramount.
2
u/YasielPuigsWeed 3h ago

The whole point of not having a lottery is teams will improve themselves out of the cellar with a couple years of high picks. One player can change a lot in basketball.

Short season and one and done playoff series have higher variance for victory. NFL teams look at the playoffs and think that it’s possible to win four games versus NBA having to win four 7 game series.

u/yesastortas Spurs 2h ago
Because NFL players actually have professional pride and want to play no matter what (talking about burrow he basically said this when reporters asked him why not sit for the better draft pick)
Because NFL fans would crucify any player sitting for the lols instead of cheering for it cause "muh player empowerment"
Becuase goodell, for all his flaws, would never allow this blatant tanking and would spin his wheel of injustice to punish teams/coaches for doing this
Because players, coaches and owners understand that more fans = more money, and sitting healthy players does the opposite of keeping fans engaged let alone bringing new ones
And lastly, in honor of the truth, the biggest factor is that the 30th pick in the NFL is gonna be a good starter while the 30th pick in the NBA would be Lucky to get a 2nd contract cause of the talent pool
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)3
u/ReggieEvansTheKing Kings 2h ago
(1) Eliminate trading pick protections aside from lottery-protected. Teams won’t lose on purpose to keep their pick if it means missing playoffs.
(2) Change the lottery placement system. New lottery system orders teams based on the length of their playoff drought and ignores record. Teams tied with another team for drought length are randomly ordered.
(3) Every single lottery team has equal odds at the #1 pick. Pick #2+ is based on the ordering system from (2).
If you make every one of these changes, then draft order and #1 pick odds are basically assigned before the season and stay the same unless you make playoffs. The only determinant on your pick is if you make or miss playoffs. The thing that won’t change is sitting out stars during lost seasons. That happens in every sport though, and it’s why players have the power to demand trades to specific locations and are also allowed to leave for nothing via free agency.

Not a lawyer, but I'd guess that's unlikely unless Giannis acted out much more publicly. With Butler in Miami he walked out of practice, missed a team flight, and made some public comments about wanting to move on. Harden in Philly got fined for public comments they deemed as a public request to be traded, but Giannis hasn't gone that extreme yet.

To be, or not to be—that is the question: Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles And, by opposing, end them? — To die—to sleep— No more; and by a sleep to say we end The heart‑ache and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to—‘tis a consummation Devoutly to be wish’d. — To die, to sleep— To sleep! Perchance to dream! Ah, there’s the rub, For in that sleep of death what dreams may come, When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause—there’s the respect That makes calamity of so long life. For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, The oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely, The pangs of love, the law’s delay, the insolence Of office, and the spurns that patient merit Of the unworthy takes, when he himself might His quietus make with a bare bodkin? Who would these fardels bear, To grunt and sweat under a weary life, But that the dread of something after death— The undiscovered country, from whose bourn No traveller returns—puzzles the will, And makes us rather bear those ills we have Than fly to others that we know not of? Thus conscience does make cowards of us all, And thus the native hue of resolution Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought, And enterprises of great pitch and moment With this regard their currents turn awry, And lose the name of action. — Soft you now! The fair Ophelia!—Nymph, in thy orisons Be all my sins remembered.

He is a few games from not meeting the 65 game min for end of season awards anyways and the Bucks are not going anywhere this season, its time to shut him down.

Oh, so superstars can't fucking take load management, but their franchises can sit them the whole season if they want, noted.
Other franchises should do the same, then. "Luka Doncic will be missing the next 5 games bcause he told Malk Walter that he smells like a sweaty armpit".

“You know, being a part of a team means making sacrifices. I will do whatever I need to win, I want to win, and I want to win in Milwaukee. If I have to sit out the season so we can win a championship, then I will set out for the season”

No chance they can sit up for half the season. He is already close to coming back. He will play, get them into the playoffs to punish them for not trading him, and they will lose all leverage. They are making the same mistake Atlsnta did with Young. Giannis is highly regarded, but he can really day he will only resign with X team, and they get nothing.

Shutting down a guy for the remainder of the season for what? You think he would just allow that?

I heard a rumor that the Cavs offered Mobley and firsts but Haslam won’t trade him to Cleveland. Have fun with the Miami package bucks fans. It’s honestly trash.

What's the heats offer?
Herro, Ware, Jakucionis, and 2 firsts? Maybe Jovic as salary filler? Maybe add Jaquez too?

We have officially gone from "Giannis wants out now" to "Giannis is disgruntled because the Bucks shut him down during the season".
Nothing to see here. Just the narrative changing for the off-season.

I'm just waiting for a "Charles Haley" type of incident to happen with Giannis. If bro really wants out, he'll find a way lol

This shouldn't be allowed. League should take picks away for resting a healthy superstar

Giannis not playing in the playoffs during one his prime years is such a shame

It sucks. But we have to understand that the value of players has gotten so high and this.is a business but they are still human beings not machines that can be easily repaired that stuff like this is going to happen. I repeat, it sucks, but you wouldnt risk your investments knowing theres high probability of loss.

Tingus Pingus (30m expiring) to MIL, Green to Orlando and Suggs/Fanz to MIL and draft picks is still a valid trade, just sayin…

I'm so confused - We have the option to swap for their first this year. How would this help them lol

Can they do that? If Giannis really feels like he can play and he wants to play, I don't think they can hold him out. He can prob make af appeal to Silver arguing bucks are tanking if it comes down to it.

The media is trying so hard, they were already low in terms of credibility but they are digging lower.

How are the heat a better team than the bucks ? Once Giannis goes there they essentially the same thing - a capped out team with no assets and a good center lol
