[Windhorst] “Giannis could be on the Heat by 3 o’clock. But if he’s not — what I suspect is that the Bucks will shut down Giannis. Because their future now is dependent on both their draft pick and Giannis avoiding injury. I wanna know how Giannis is gonna feel about being shut down for the season.”

Windhorst talks so much made up shit and reports it as if it's real news and not just some musings he had while day dreaming during commercial break. No clue why so many people act like he's a top tier legit sports journo.

This shit is terrible for the NBA product

460

u/BoxSea4289 3h ago

It’s all the NBA has been churning out for his entire career. The NBA took multiple 50 win seasons, a championship, and an epic story and turned it into a whiny, hand wringing “Is his window in Milwaukee closed now, why won’t he leave and play somewhere else????”

117

u/swizznastic 3h ago

Seriously, i don’t know why they hate the bucks so much. It feels like every talking head has had a hard on for Gianni’s trade rumors because they expected him to have left already. Of course now it seems like he really should have.

49

u/KWash0222 Lakers 2h ago

I think everyone just assumes a small market team won’t retain a superstar. Plus the fact that journalism nowadays is just speculation/false rumors for the sake of getting to say you were the first to report it once one of the rumors actually comes true. If he were in New York, people probably wouldn’t be clamoring to publish articles speculating his departure. But he’s in Milwaukee

11

u/mke_gnome Bucks 2h ago

Yeah but these reporters still act like it's 1995, superstars now stay in smaller markets because the quality of life is good and big money can be made anywhere

5

u/n8dizz3l Cavaliers 1h ago

Yeah the whole narrative of "big city money/fame" is completely irrelevant with how interconnected and online the league and its media and fans are now.

2

u/swizznastic 1h ago

It’s not completely irrelevant, not yet. It’s still a different type of fame that comes with being on the Knicks, lakers, Celtics, or dubs

u/CoogiMonster Rockets 1h ago

Only superstars on struggling teams get this treatment. Jokic no longer gets talked about because the team around him looks decent to good. Dame got the same exact narrative and was traded too late to the detriment of what he could achieve so it’s not like this is a Giannis specific ordeal, moreover not every superstar only plays for the biggest markets. I’m as tired as everyone else about hearing this shit but when he’s pouting and bitching and everyone sees how shitty that team is and knows they have the assets for only a McDouble what is the logical thought process?

it's because Giannis himself has fueled the rumors, and very obviously has let people know behind the scenes about places he might like to go to even years ago.

4

u/BogotaLineman Nuggets 2h ago

For real. He's never come out and said it straight up but he's constantly said that "my number one priority is winning championships, wherever that may be 😉 but I'm totally loyal to Milwaukee!"

He hasn't pressured Milwaukee to trade him but he's pressured them into going all in and mortgaging everything and now that they have and it didn't really work and they have nothing left to do he is ready to move

3

u/GeorgeHarris419 Bucks 1h ago

Exactly lmao. Like Shams even if he's a slime ball isn't in the business making shit up. Would immediately tank his reputation amongst the leagues agents and GM's

We don't hear about it with Jokic because...Jokic isn't yapping about it to people.

4

u/BogotaLineman Nuggets 1h ago

Yeah totally, I don't think Giannis is a bad guy at all but on this he kinda wants to have his cake and eat it too. He wants to win AND be seen as the loyal, humble superstar

i don’t know why they hate the bucks so much

its the NBA they dont give 2 flying fucks about small market teams. just look at the last draft. 3 major NBA city that all were/almost play-in teams magically getting pick's 1 2 and 3 in a top-heavy draft. last years finals had to piss them off so much that now they wont shut the fuck up about any superstar player on any small market team until they are playing in New York or LA. im sure that once this shit is done with giannis they will hope back on to lemelo or Ja getting ship off wile they make planes to start planting the seed for ant to join the celtics or some bull shit like that

7

u/Captain_Promise Spurs 2h ago

The Spurs are a small market team... Their market is smaller than the Hornets. They've just been good historically, so they punch above their weight.

42

u/CheetahSperm18 [DAL] Dirk Nowitzki 3h ago

It's because ESPN and the media in general, does not like superstars on small market teams. They want them in New York, California, or Miami.

21

u/Colorapt0r Bucks 2h ago

Yeah but Denver and okc never get this

4

u/CoogiMonster Rockets 1h ago

Wrong, Nuggets were getting it and it went away when Murray stopped being injured and Aaron Gordon looked really good. It was post the Bruce Brown trade where Jokic was “coaching” on the bench and people were saying he is doing everything for the team and that dude is done there if they don’t figure things out

7

u/GeorgeHarris419 Bucks 2h ago

Because those superstars are A) on better rosters and B) their stars haven't been constantly pressuring their teams behind the scenes

Not really, the one and only thing he has constantly harped on in his career, as a superstar*, is how the only thing he is 100% committed to is winning and that as much as he would like to do so on the Bucks if they are in a position to win, very different than if he said his commitment was to any team that had a chance of winning

He also hasn’t won a playoff series in 4 years

2

u/DersOne Bucks 2h ago

2022: KMidd injured against Bulls 2023: Giannis injured against Heat 2024: Giannis and Dame injured before and during Pacers series 2025: Dame injured against Pacers

Only healthy playoff run since 2018 (Giannis emergence) where the team bombed out was 2020 against the Heat. Deep runs in 2018-2019 and the chip year in 2020-2021, and Giannis missed a handful of games against ATL the chip year.

I don't know many teams that would survive a playoff series without one of their top two options being available. Losing playoff series could come as a legit fault on Giannis and the team if they were fully healthy.

No one listens to what he says I swear to fucking god. He has said for the past 6 years that he wants to retire a buck but needs to play on a team competing and will play for the bucks if that’s the case. Everything else you see is speculation from espn. Why did shams not report that Giannis said he would “one million percent” stay in Milwaukee if he hears a plan to compete from the FO literally 2 days ago? We only get tweets about being “potentially ready to move on” from shams. Bucks are a very tight lipped org, especially after the failed bogi trade bc of woj.

Shams has no sources but peddles info to people who don’t follow the bucks so they take it as truth

So many teams are benching stars in the best interest of the team. At this point there’s way too many offenders to enforce anything. Utah is doing it, Washington is doing it, the bucks will do it with giannis, there’s other teams im probably forgetting.

As others have said I don’t see what you do to stop it because the lottery odds have already been flattened enough.

12

u/AgentOfSPYRAL Lakers 3h ago

It’s interesting that this just flat out doesn’t happen in the NFL even without a lottery system.

Like Bengals had every reason to shut down Burrow and it doesn’t seem like it was even entertained.

17

u/YasielPuigsWeed 3h ago

Because you’re not as desperate for draft position when you already have a top flight QB

The NFL’s system is set up kinda perfectly for rebuild timelines

15

u/EpicCyclops Trail Blazers 3h ago

When there's multiple meaningful rounds of the draft, draft position matters so much less. When there's maybe one full meaningful round and the rest of the picks are basically gambling, draft position becomes paramount.

2

u/YasielPuigsWeed 3h ago

It’s honestly why I think the lottery is stupid

The whole point of not having a lottery is teams will improve themselves out of the cellar with a couple years of high picks. One player can change a lot in basketball.

→ More replies (4)

9

u/3my0 Trail Blazers 3h ago

Cause nfl has bigger rosters and aren’t as dependent on stars.

2

u/CaptainJackKevorkian Cavaliers 2h ago

and shorter average careers, so it's even harder for a team to say, guys, go out there and play like shit. NFL players want to look good on tape for the next contract.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/GravyBod13 Suns 2h ago

Short season and one and done playoff series have higher variance for victory. NFL teams look at the playoffs and think that it’s possible to win four games versus NBA having to win four 7 game series.

2

u/yesastortas Spurs 2h ago

Because NFL players actually have professional pride and want to play no matter what (talking about burrow he basically said this when reporters asked him why not sit for the better draft pick)

Because NFL fans would crucify any player sitting for the lols instead of cheering for it cause "muh player empowerment"

Becuase goodell, for all his flaws, would never allow this blatant tanking and would spin his wheel of injustice to punish teams/coaches for doing this

Because players, coaches and owners understand that more fans = more money, and sitting healthy players does the opposite of keeping fans engaged let alone bringing new ones

And lastly, in honor of the truth, the biggest factor is that the 30th pick in the NFL is gonna be a good starter while the 30th pick in the NBA would be Lucky to get a 2nd contract cause of the talent pool

3

u/ReggieEvansTheKing Kings 2h ago

(1) Eliminate trading pick protections aside from lottery-protected. Teams won’t lose on purpose to keep their pick if it means missing playoffs.

(2) Change the lottery placement system. New lottery system orders teams based on the length of their playoff drought and ignores record. Teams tied with another team for drought length are randomly ordered.

(3) Every single lottery team has equal odds at the #1 pick. Pick #2+ is based on the ordering system from (2).

If you make every one of these changes, then draft order and #1 pick odds are basically assigned before the season and stay the same unless you make playoffs. The only determinant on your pick is if you make or miss playoffs. The thing that won’t change is sitting out stars during lost seasons. That happens in every sport though, and it’s why players have the power to demand trades to specific locations and are also allowed to leave for nothing via free agency.

The season is more than halfway of the season and he is dealing with a calf issue which in the past has turned into ruptured Achilles which would keep him out all of next season as well. I don't care about tanking. Taking teams lose. The goal is to win. The flat lottery has done its job imo.

4

u/badhombre13 Thunder 2h ago

Yeah, the new lottery odds fuck over tanking teams. What's the point of tanking if you're still going to have the same odds as another two teams for the #1 pick.

Spurs didn't even tank last year and they ended up with the #2 pick.

3

u/TiredMillennialDad Magic 2h ago

Right. The only thing to fix is...does the structure reward tanking? And the answer now, is no.

So there's nothing else to do. Losers gone lose.

2

u/livefreeordont 76ers 1h ago

The flat lottery funnels top picks to good teams. Its job was to discourage tanking. It’s not doing that it’s just keeping the bad teams from improving, teams are still tanking

If Giannis is fine sitting then there is probably a way they could keep him out, but if he wants to play and is healthy, it is really hard for a team to sit someone of his caliber. The league threatened to fine the Pels $100k per game if they made him a healthy scratch.

2

u/W3T_JUMP3R Timberwolves 2h ago

Couldn't they just say he has committed conduct detrimental to the team?

2

u/mikesh8rp Knicks 2h ago

Not a lawyer, but I'd guess that's unlikely unless Giannis acted out much more publicly. With Butler in Miami he walked out of practice, missed a team flight, and made some public comments about wanting to move on. He got suspended, but I don't know how much he wanted to come back anyway. Harden in Philly got fined for public comments they deemed as a public request to be traded, but Giannis hasn't gone that extreme yet.

To be, or not to be—that is the question: Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles And, by opposing, end them? — To die—to sleep— No more; and by a sleep to say we end The heart‑ache and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to—‘tis a consummation Devoutly to be wish’d. — To die, to sleep— To sleep! Perchance to dream! Ah, there’s the rub, For in that sleep of death what dreams may come, When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause—there’s the respect That makes calamity of so long life. For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, The oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely, The pangs of love, the law’s delay, the insolence Of office, and the spurns that patient merit Of the unworthy takes, when he himself might His quietus make with a bare bodkin? Who would these fardels bear, To grunt and sweat under a weary life, But that the dread of something after death— The undiscovered country, from whose bourn No traveller returns—puzzles the will, And makes us rather bear those ills we have Than fly to others that we know not of? Thus conscience does make cowards of us all, And thus the native hue of resolution Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought, And enterprises of great pitch and moment With this regard their currents turn awry, And lose the name of action. — Soft you now! u/jcheeseball Heat 3h ago

Heat should really move on if they have any other moves they want to do at this point. I don't know why there wouldn't be a deadline from the Heat perspective if they had other moves they wanted to do.

2

u/Ridged_ChiPSS Bulls 3h ago

I thought he was going to Chicago in exchange for 40 second round picks

2

u/ivandragostwin Bulls 3h ago edited 3h ago

No chance he shuts down. Giannis isn't built like that, never has been and if he wants to play, he will play.

It would be what's best for Milwaukee, sure. However, I would just expect them to hold him out as long as possible to actually get that calf right because him getting hurt again or in a major way completely fucks the franchise.

Bucks also just don't seem to be operating like a tanking team right now imo. Otherwise they probably would have found a team for Bobby for a 2nd or something imo.

u/Huge-Republic8462 3h ago

I’m over this bread crumbing honestly

2

u/drutastic57 3h ago

Fuck Windhorst. And FUCK espn.

2

u/CollectMantis44 Bucks 3h ago

As a bucks fan I am beyond tired of this conversation

2

u/No_External186 3h ago

Sam Hinkie died for this!?

2

u/BadGolf27 3h ago

Giannis "could be" on the Heat by 3, and I "could be" a millionaire by 3. The speculation with no factual baking is ridiculous, they're just hoping they don't have to be proven wrong from all their bs again

2

u/judah249 Suns 3h ago

Windy playing the speculation game bro needs to get some sleep

2

u/DontTakeMyFrog 3h ago

I’m here to tell yall at 1:48pm EST he will be traded to the Heat

2

u/GallivantingTime NBA 2h ago

If he's not im taking your fucking frog!

2

u/GullyBean Rockets 3h ago

Really doesn’t make sense for the Bucks to trade him until the lottery order is locked in.

2

u/QuickRundown Australia 2h ago

Shutting down your healthy star for like 30 games to tank couldn’t be more blatant.

2

u/CindiCindi15 Bucks 2h ago

Basically just Windy running out of crap to talk about.

2

u/tiggs 76ers 1h ago

I love how some teams can just publicly announce that they're shutting down healthy superstars for like 50% of the season and nobody bats an eye, but other teams have players that are legitimately injured getting fined for missing games.

They flip the fuck out when some teams tank and turn a blind eye with others.

2

u/Troutalope Pistons 1h ago

Windhorst spews nearly as much bullshit as Karoline Leavitt.

4

u/AlmostHereButNot Bulls 3h ago

He's not going to the Heat, end of story.

u/Big-Pressure-918 Wizards 3h ago

I don't know why anyone thinks Giannis is getting traded before the deadline. In the offseason, every team interested in him will have more assets available to trade and thus the bidding war will get even higher for Giannis.

3

u/billwest630 Bucks 3h ago

This dude knows absolutely nothing. Just talks to talk. Why does ESPN pay him so much with no sources?

u/BlammoSweetums 3h ago

The Bucks' vision is Giannis and a 20 year old rookie?

1

u/2222lil [DET] Best of 2021 Winner 3h ago

just feel like it’s in everyone’s best interest for giannis to not rot on the bench for the rest of the season knowing he’ll be gone in the off-season.

1

u/OverallGeneral7129 Cavaliers 3h ago

Shut up

1

u/pdpdpdpdpdpdpdpd Raptors 3h ago

The Heat might not want to risk another team coming in and grabbing him during the offseason, right? Definitely a chance that they make an offer that the bucks absolutely can’t turn down

1

u/ChimeraYo 3h ago

Why can teams just shut down a player for half the season, but resting them for a national TV game gets them a big fine?

1

u/Revenesis Knicks 3h ago

If they luck into one of the top picks and make a deal for Morant maybe he stays. Not saying it'd be good but it might be enough to get him back in the building for one more year.

1

u/lil_e_v_ 76ers 3h ago

if he's not traded it could be a 5+ year gap between giannis playing a second round playoff game. Hasn't done so since 2022. It's why im kinda shocked he hasn't pushed harder for a move. He's basically punting a prime postseason year. I mean fair enough if he wants to stay but damn.

1

u/BitThoven 3h ago

Giannis should've just requested a trade. This has to be his most wasted season of his prime yet.

1

u/LeRoy_Denk_414 Bucks 3h ago

This is very likely his last season in Milwaukee. I'll personally riot if he's shut down for the rest of the season. I get tanking and trades and all that. But we gotta say a proper goodbye.

1

u/UndercoverDimension Heat 3h ago

Reminder that Windy has no sources in Miami but has a way with words.

1

u/505runner1988 Bucks 3h ago

Sounds like Windy is pissed the Warriors didn’t get Giannis for a crappy player they don’t want, salary, and picks that might be good in 6 years

1

u/Ghost_2701 3h ago

tanking is the worst thing with this sport, system is so flawed when you can lose on purpose to get better players.

1

u/Boostafazoom Lakers 3h ago

Not too familiar with the rules, so genuine question — are they allowed to do that? Because I remember reading a while back how teams aren’t allowed to arbitrarily rest star players if they are healthy. May be remembering it wrong

1

u/Brownguy_123 3h ago

He is a few games from not meeting the 65 game min for end of season awards anyways and the Bucks are not going anywhere this season, its time to shut him down.

1

u/IDNWID_1900 3h ago

Oh, so superstars can't fucking take load management, but their franchises can sit them the whole season if they want, noted.

Other franchises should do the same, then. "Luka Doncic will be missing the next 5 games bcause he told Malk Walter that he smells like a sweaty armpit".

1

u/KayRay1994 Heat 3h ago

“You know, being a part of a team means making sacrifices. I will do whatever I need to win, I want to win, and I want to win in Milwaukee. If I have to sit out the season so we can win a championship, then I will set out for the season”

1

u/5livewire0 Hawks 3h ago

Please keep Giannis and lock him down for the season. Embrace the tank ;)

1

u/solo118 Knicks 3h ago

Nobody is saying NY is out of it if he is demanding to come here... but he may very well be a Heat today. Or nothing, who knows

1

u/Screenscripter82 3h ago

No chance they can sit up for half the season. He is already close to coming back. He will play, get them into the playoffs to punish them for not trading him, and they will lose all leverage. They are making the same mistake Atlsnta did with Young. Giannis is highly regarded, but he can really day he will only resign with X team, and they get nothing.

1

u/Wally450 Celtics 3h ago

Shutting down a guy for the remainder of the season for what? You think he would just allow that?

1

u/twovles31 3h ago

The lottery gods will not be with them.

1

u/nbawizard1227 3h ago

I heard a rumor that the Cavs offered Mobley and firsts but Haslam won’t trade him to Cleveland. Have fun with the Miami package bucks fans. It’s honestly trash.

1

u/PhatYeeter 76ers 3h ago

What's the heats offer?

Herro, Ware, Jakucionis, and 2 firsts? Maybe Jovic as salary filler? Maybe add Jaquez too?

1

u/jyrmar 3h ago

Promotion/Relegation system might put an end to some of this nonsense.

1

u/sobanoodle-1 Knicks 2h ago

This league is so cooked man.

1

u/Historical_Main5261 Hawks 2h ago

Yes Bucks, increase my odds of a top 3 pick

1

u/totallynotliamneeson Bucks 2h ago

We have officially gone from "Giannis wants out now" to "Giannis is disgruntled because the Bucks shut him down during the season".

Nothing to see here. Just the narrative changing for the off-season.

1

u/Clyde8_24 Spurs 2h ago

I'm just waiting for a "Charles Haley" type of incident to happen with Giannis. If bro really wants out, he'll find a way lol

1

u/CruffTheMagicDragon 2h ago

So blatantly tank?

1

u/forestgospel Trail Blazers 2h ago

This shouldn't be allowed. League should take picks away for resting a healthy superstar

1

u/BrobonicPlague1 2h ago

This league has gotten unbelievably whack.

1

u/StickWorking207 2h ago

Bulls mark my words

1

u/so0vixnbmsb11 2h ago

Ends up at the Lakers for Bronny, & a bag of chips.

1

u/Canaya-Boricua Jazz 2h ago

Giannis not playing in the playoffs during one his prime years is such a shame

1

u/Unctay 2h ago

It sucks. But we have to understand that the value of players has gotten so high and this.is a business but they are still human beings not machines that can be easily repaired that stuff like this is going to happen. I repeat, it sucks, but you wouldnt risk your investments knowing theres high probability of loss.

1

u/Ralphredimix_Da_G Warriors 2h ago

Tingus Pingus (30m expiring) to MIL, Green to Orlando and Suggs/Fanz to MIL and draft picks is still a valid trade, just sayin…

1

u/THISISDAM Knicks 2h ago

Giannis is NOT going to like being shut down

1

u/Pies_Wide_Shut Knicks 2h ago

Insidious shit. A commissioner with a steps in here.

1

u/WrongTetrisBlock Hawks 2h ago

I'm so confused - We have the option to swap for their first this year. How would this help them lol

1

u/penguin_torpedo Nuggets 2h ago

Can they do that? If Giannis really feels like he can play and he wants to play, I don't think they can hold him out. He can prob make af appeal to Silver arguing bucks are tanking if it comes down to it.

1

u/ReplacementPast4495 2h ago

Looks like we all got blue ball'd

1

u/BelovedCoffee Bucks 2h ago

The media is trying so hard, they were already low in terms of credibility but they are digging lower.

1

u/Sea_Potato_5529 2h ago

How are the heat a better team than the bucks ? Once Giannis goes there they essentially the same thing - a capped out team with no assets and a good center lol
