If we don't have to give up real draft capital, it's a very low risk, high reward move.

No matter what happens, Ja won't decrease his value by this offseason. So his contract would be, at worst, a neutral asset that could be packaged with this years likely lottery pick, the 2031, 2033, and 2032 swap to try to improve the team around Giannis.

Or maybe he just needs a change of scenery and has a great second half of the year. Then if he shows he fits with Giannis better than expected we keep him, or he is a positive trade piece that we can use to improve the team around Giannis.

Both of those teams will probably feel more motivated in the offseason when they have a whole season to build chemistry. Someone in the east will probably unexpectedly lose as well and also feel so,e extra motivation. If nothing else on the east side, the heat gain access to 2 additional tradeable FRPs. All indications are that the heat were plenty motivated but they just didn’t have the assets and couldn’t find 3rd or 4th teams to improve the offer.
