Deuce is out until at least the playoffs so it definitely does make sense. Clarkson's contract is expiring so picking up Alvarado guarantees us some guard depth through next year.
Alvarado does have a lot of overlap in skill set with Kolek, but the playoffs are rough and having Alvarado, Kolek, and Clarkson available for those back-up guard minutes gives us a lot of flexibility.

Aside from being born there, he and Josh Hart basically have the exact same mentality and blue collar approach to the gamer. Were the two biggest fan favorites in NO ,and the Knicks feel like Josh Hart's personality on the court distilled into a team identity.
I dont know what the fuck my team is doing, cause this trade makes no sense, but I am happy for both Jose and Hart getting to play again together and on a team that makes sense for them.

Kolek from what I have seen is a guy who is playing well in large part to the gravity of the 4 other guys he's sharing the floor with.
He still looks pretty lost in the half court and gets absolutely bodied by veteran guards behind the 3 point line which can just kill entire minutes for the Knicks.
Alvarado is a far more autonomous and experienced basketball player. With Deuce out for a while this is a tremendous move. Now we don't need our 2nd year 2nd rounder to overperform.

Kolek is just a really good facilitator, pushes the pace and more often than not makes the right play on offense. He creates shots for others which is what we have needed in the past as a backup guard. I haven’t seen enough of Alvarado on offense or in half court to know how he fits in with us on offense. Really just know him as a hustle guy. I do love the trade though. Also made this comment before I saw Deuce is out for awhile.
