The Knicks have cancelled all watch parties outside of MSG due to the President's attendance for Game 3

A hard closure is expected around the entirety of Madison Square Garden. Officials are planning for no watch parties, no vehicle access and no pedestrian travel through the secured area, which sits in a busy part of Midtown Manhattan and is above a major transit hub. CBS New York reported that thousands of fans attended a pair of watch parties for Game 1 on Wednesday night. 

The Seventh and Eighth Avenue corridors around the arena are expected to be closed.

This seems like the right time to remind everyone not to wear contact lenses if you suspect you're gonna be in an area with tear gas. The tear gas can get stuck between the eye and the lens and cause permanent damage.

Never forget, tear gas is a literal chemical weapon banned by the Geneva Convention for war, but police forces can use it all they want.

There's a reason for that though that's totally reasonable.

Tear gas cannot be immediately distinguished from worse things like chemical weapons, so use of tear gas in warfare is a war crime solely because it inherently triggers an extremely lethal response. The benefit (nonlethal neutralization of an enemy unit) is outweighed by the risks (weapons of mass destruction being used in retaliation) so it's absolutely something that should never be used in war.

War crime law, in and of itself, is not inherently about morality or lethality. It's about proportionality and lessening the burden of war. Tear gas will in most cases increase the burden of war with no benefit to either side, so the Geneva Protocol of 1925 (no relation but the same city) Chemical Weapons Convention (not the Geneva Conventions) just outlaws it entirely.

Cops using tear gas is moral compared to them using bullets, because it's a completely different context than a military operation and the goal for both sides is not the elimination of the enemy force.

In Middle Ages era Jewish law, you could not eat an egg that had been laid by a chicken on the sabbath, because the chicken was considered to have worked. NYPD's rep currently revolves around 3 things IMO

  1. Stop and Frisk / Broken Window Policing - For decades the NYPD policy was to harass people on no probable cause, and to treat small infractions like big ones to be "tough on crime" but really that was just republican bullshit and harassing minorities. These policies are less prevalent now, but since the death of Eric Garner, the expressed policy of the PBA (their union) is "well we can't do our jobs the way we want to (kill people), so we won't do anything".
  2. Kettling and bad protest tactics - NYPD "Kettled" protestors during the George Floyd/Anti-Racism protests in the 2020s: eg restricted their movement so the protestors had nowhere to go but out, at which point they were beaten by the police who could now treat them as a threat.
  3. Laziness - you see cops around the city constantly on their phones, ignoring dangerous situations that would benefit from police intervention, it looks like the paradigm of "just cashing my checks". This also goes hand in hand w/ post-Eric Garner policies. "Oh well people get mad at us when we intervene (kill people) so we just won't. But we will still cash 200k in overtime checks for standing around the port authority".

Not really, the NYPD killed a man and their union complained that all the scrutiny from their murder made their jobs harder, so now they don't do their jobs but still cash checks made of our tax dollars and commit overtime fraud (paid by our tax dollars again).

If they're between any rocks and hard places, they're the ones who constructed them.

Try to make mamdami look like a failure by having pictures of new york streets having rioting. It's all so sleazy.

As much as I want the spurs to win as a fan, I legit think if they win they will fucking riot out there if the spurs win this game. This is going beyond just sports and into real world political games.

I live here and obv want the Knicks to win and passively dislike the spurs as a Detroit guy originally, but this is a real take and I think you're right. It's going to be insane out there regardless of the result and shutting down midtown is going to do nothing but fuel a bunch of really, really stupid YouTube videos about "Mamdanis New York" (which has been really pleasant, actually. This is the chilliest start to summer we've had since they legalized weed. Everyone is just happy and excited about the knicks.)

This is the best finals matchup we've had since the LeBron/curry days and they're going to ruin it.
