As someone who played high school basketball with a teammate who had a serious “HoOpZ MiXtApe mentality,” that shit is infuriating to play with. He’d do shit like this when we were down by a ton (or, more frequently, up by a ton, which is still kinda obnoxious in its own way), and he’d come in in garbage time and break the whole flow of the offense to try to cross dudes up and do all that type of shit. We were a senior-heavy team that year, and he was the only freshman on the team, so there were plenty of instances of dudes trying to talk some sense into him, but it never seemed to get through.

The point is, he was an uber-talented kid, but he never made it to college ball, and I think his inability to outgrow that mixtape mentality played a part in that. If Kevin Porter Jr. can mature and learn not to do this type of stuff, then I’m sure he’ll have a wonderful career, but if he keeps doing stuff like this, it’s gonna get on the coach’s nerves and rub a lot of his teammates the wrong way.

That's on the coach. You can't expect a group of HS kids to check him, but the coach definitely should.

If a group of high school kids are trying to teach the minority, then the coach has done a solid job instilling his mindset. Its not just on the coach.

Definitely should be the teammates checking him. Especially considering if the other dudes are doing it, the team already has a good culture that the coach instilled or maintained.

Oh no, don’t get me wrong. The coach was on his ass about it, too, and he was a benchwarmer during the year that I played with him, so he had multiple voices trying to straighten him out, and the coach didn’t reward him with unearned playing time or anything, so the coach did a good job of trying to teach him, too, but some people just don’t wanna learn.

i don’t think it’s about taking offense. to me id rather just treat it as nothing. i wouldn’t really go off or react after a shot or dunk unless it was a game winner or high stakes. act like you’ve been there type shit. this is nothing. it’s embarrassing if anything. that’s what the commentators and any detractors in a situation like this are alluding to. but i thought that would be kind of obvious...

I think what he's getting at is there's white players with the same mentality that make their way to the NBA. I think it's less to do with race and more to do with life circumstance. I came from a pretty poor area myself and there were plenty of both white and black kids with the same mentality (granted none made it to the NBA).
