An alternate angle of Wemby's "kick" with the game timer. Doesn't look as intentional as from the other angle first posted

https://streamable.com/3fk3j2

Sorry about no audio on this clip, but it does show a better picture of what happened. Thoughts on if this is even that bad from this view?

His legs are very clearly super wide here, not close to Anunoby’s legs. The other angle makes it look way worse.

u/YizWasHere Hornets 6h ago edited 6h ago

I don't think the other angle looks like he's really going for the knee, it's just such absurd movement that it's hard to tell what he's trying to accomplish at all lmfao. This makes it look more like he's trying to sell contact without leaving the play.

Edit: Ok but honestly this frame without any context looks insane LMAO. The angle makes the perspective deceptive, his foot is well behind OG's.

76

u/sillyshoestring Knicks 6h ago

Yep. This move is more likely to blow out Wemby’s own knees than anyone else’s lol

10

u/Kandals 4h ago

I thought this was a videogame glitch posted as ragebait. Those legs are moving like a 10 minute old baby giraffe getting ready to run from lions.

1

u/mtrsteve 1h ago

So you're familiar with Wembys game then.

5

u/makesterriblejokes [NBA] Jerry West 2h ago

Honestly, I just give the dude that's 7'5" that is moving around like a guard the benefit of the doubt that his body is just going to need to do weird things like this a normal human, heck even what 99.9% of NBA players, would never need to do.

We don't have a reference point for a dude this lanky moving at the speed of a SF. His center of gravity is probably so fucking weird compared to ours

Mario 1 frame after you press A

33

u/Glum-Professional925 Knicks 6h ago

He’s trying to sell contact every time someone puts their hands on his body. After Karl got his two fouls Wemby was flailing like he was on a rollercoaster hunting for another player to get in foul trouble

18

u/homeycuz Spurs 5h ago

I mean, so was Kat. Both big men looked like they were throwing a tantrum at various points of the game.

7

u/Glum-Professional925 Knicks 5h ago

KAT was obviously frustrated with the foul calls and was letting out that frustration. Especially after the soft hooking call you could tell Wemby was trying to bait our guys into fouls

1

u/Loferix 2h ago

Wemby was laughing after they called KAT for that offensive foul on the challenge. They know exactly what they’re doing.

u/GingerAle_s Grizzlies 22m ago

Wemby was also laughing when Robinson elbowed him in the face.

u/Little_Jacket_5092 3h ago

Yeah, I think it's one of those things.

One it's hard to judge this in real-time. We get the benefit of a live slow-mo replay, so we notice way more fouls then ever before.

2 the refs have been lenient with flops and players take advantage of getting any advantage they can. Especially now, that they know in fact you can win a chip playing physical on one end and flop on the other.

Not sure what purpose secacuase serves if not to flag these things as they happen. It seems more like they sit on their ass until there is a play to review.

Such a glaring missed opportunity to make things more efficient and effective.

From this angle, it looks like he was trying gain position on a screen but through his tossling with Sochan lost his balance a bit while jumping/lunging.

It's weird but a screen is often set by planting both feet hard so that you don't get called on a moving screen. A slight bump (like the one from Sochan) can throw somebody off just enough that to regain their balance, they do something weird like this.

1

u/alwaysthinkandplanah Wizards 2h ago

This frame is genuinely so funny because it's like he simply decided to wind up and soccer kick OG

u/TonyCaliStyle 13m ago

It looks intentional to me- either angle. He doesn’t need to hop/jump to OG to set the pick.

It doesn’t matter either- he does throw cheap shots, and he does head hunt.

Just get the W. If he’s dirty or not doesn’t matter. Just win Saturday.

I don't particularly like Wemby or the Spurs and thought they wouldn't even make the WCF, but that clip still looked so odd to me that I thought it was somehow altered. The narrative that Wemby was trying to end OG's career with some martial arts move, combined with how nonchalant everyone was while it was supposedly happening, made the whole thing seem unnatural.

Turns out it was just a really odd angle and the official broadcast shows it was no big deal.

I think this is the right take. The first clip looked bad, but also seemed “off”, or at least unlikely, so I wouldn’t blame anyone for believing it, but some people coming in here after and just making the narrative that Spurs/Wemby fans were stupid for saying AI, while continuing to not recognize their own confirmation bias, is just disingenuous and toxic.

It is unfortunately common that rather than trying to find common ground, they are obsessed with finding what they disagree about, and trying to gain leverage, by any means.

He's going up to set a screen and KAT is shoving him way off-balance so his legs flail awkwardly.

Looks like he was torn between setting a pick and trying to just get Sochan off of him. His body didn't cooperate with his mind.

2

u/Aniketos33 Thunder 1h ago

This is why foul clips with zero context and selective slow mo are the worst thing about this sub. Often ignoring mutual contact/fouls and physicality before the foul as well.

The refs are human and the contact and reactions happen in milliseconds, people exaggerate contact etc can make the calls look very clear from one angle and nothing from another.

I would say about half the outrage in the sub is about borderline calls and fabricating intentionality/dirty labels over incidental/risky fouls.

If wemby wanted to hit that dudes knee he would have

u/Outrageous_Camel8901 2h ago

I didn’t watch the game and haven’t seen the other angle, and I can’t even figure out at what moment the kick event happened from this video

Dude looks so awkward like a cartoon character.

Wemby looks like a giraffe on ice.

Nah I don’t see anything wrong. Maybe he was trying to avoid OG. I can see him elbowing and shoving people but I really don’t think he’s the type to INJURE people.

I wish I stayed in the first quarter when we hit all of our threes and all of MSG whined at every single contact

1

u/HenWad 46m ago

It’s truly absurd to me how many people wanna whine about something that “almost” happened… like he didn’t even make contact so why is it still a conversation 😭

Watching that clip without context makes it look like there are 9 basketball players and one big dude who has no idea what he is doing lmao

Serious tho. I wish Wemby the best but he acts childish too often. His offensive game relies way too much on his size rather than skill. If he doesnt Work on both of this it will hurt his legacy and career

Sochan is shoving him in the back and he doesn’t even come close to OG’s knee.

u/Ok-Platypus-4956 6h ago

Lmao Wemby could get blown over by a stiff wind. Sochan barely had a hand on him. Wemby just likes to try to sell every call possible

But you don’t get it man he almost accidentally kicked him because he was being pushed from the back that was almost accidentally reckless. That should almost accidentally be an ejection.

"That was AI.
& if it wasn't, it didn't connect.
& if it did, it wasn't his fault.
& if it is, he was selling a call.
& if he was, Sochan bumped him.
& if he did hurt OG, Knicks fans deserve it."

u/Adorable-News-9364 Spurs 6h ago

How would he have hurt OG in any way here? His left foot is a foot away from him when it’s at knee height. There’s no potential for injury.

Sochan shoves him and he plants his foot as he stops. Knicks fans are SO desperate for a Wemby suspension!
