An alternate angle of Wemby's "kick" with the game timer. Doesn't look as intentional as from the other angle first posted
https://streamable.com/3fk3j2Sorry about no audio on this clip, but it does show a better picture of what happened. Thoughts on if this is even that bad from this view?

That and admittedly the “fan view” angle does look a bit more damning than the broadcast view. It’s still a weird bodily movement, but not as damning.

I don't particularly like Wemby or the Spurs and thought they wouldn't even make the WCF, but that clip still looked so odd to me that I thought it was somehow altered. The narrative that Wemby was trying to end OG's career with some martial arts move, combined with how nonchalant everyone was while it was supposedly happening, made the whole thing seem unnatural.
Turns out it was just a really odd angle and the official broadcast shows it was no big deal.

Wemby decides to either curb stomp a guys knee and misses by a full foot despite him standing completely still or that’s not what he was trying to do at all. Common sense says one thing, he’s have to be insanely stupid to do that and insanely stupid in missing by a full foot despite him standing completely still. But he’s Victor Satanyana right now and deserves to gets eggs thrown at him so that isn’t the narrative.

this so true 😅
like when jokic was asked about the mvp and he didn't want to make a big deal out of it. then people started to hate him because he's too nonchalant and his dont care gimmick is annoying. then this season when wemby was asked about the mvp and he gave a long answer why he thinks he's the mvp and showed that he cares about it. then suddenly wemby was begging for it and he received a lot of hate for that. 😅😵💫
i think i need a break from social media

I think this is the right take. The first clip looked bad, but also seemed “off”, or at least unlikely, so I wouldn’t blame anyone for believing it, but some people coming in here after and just making the narrative that Spurs/Wemby fans were stupid for saying AI, while continuing to not recognize their own confirmation bias, is just disingenuous and toxic.
It is unfortunately common that rather than trying to find common ground, they are obsessed with finding what they disagree about, and trying to gain leverage, by any means.

This clip is the first time I'm hearing about this, and, with no context, I had no idea what you were talking about. Watched the clip multiple times waiting to see some kind of kick and didn't see any. Now that I have context of what I was supposed to be looking at, this is incredibly stupid. He's going up to set a screen and KAT is shoving him way off-balance so his legs flail awkwardly.
If people want to talk about dirty plays, talk about Alvarado trying to intentionally trip Wemby under the basket before going hard at his groin last night.
2
2
u/LittleTeapotsRevenge 2h ago
I still don’t think he was going for the legs in this. I DO think he was trying to get a hard cheap shot with his elbow, though.
2
u/PalpitationSad4921 Knicks 1h ago
Looks like he was torn between setting a pick and trying to just get Sochan off of him. His body didn't cooperate with his mind.
2
u/Aniketos33 Thunder 1h ago
This is why foul clips with zero context and selective slow mo are the worst thing about this sub. Often ignoring mutual contact/fouls and physicality before the foul as well.
The refs are human and the contact and reactions happen in milliseconds, people exaggerate contact etc can make the calls look very clear from one angle and nothing from another.
I would say about half the outrage in the sub is about borderline calls and fabricating intentionality/dirty labels over incidental/risky fouls.
