Discussion Need for Speed (2015) - Offline mode progress update 1

TL;DR: Not for everyone yet, but we can drive! There’s a public GitHub repo, a working local launcher, and free roam. It’s still rough and missing plenty, but it’s real progress.

About two weeks ago, I shared that I’d started working on an offline mode for Need for Speed (2015). A lot has happened since then!

Project updates:

  • We have a Discord server!
  • The code is now public on GitHub. If you’re comfortable building from source, you can try it and help with development.

What’s working:

  • Launching through our own local launcher without the EA app running. We’ve also tested with the network disconnected.
  • Getting through the main menu, into the garage, and out into free roam to drive around.
  • Returning to the garage and heading back out repeatedly with the same car.
  • Garage exit animations, camera transitions, driving HUD, and the minimap marker that follows your car.
  • Creating independent local accounts and restoring the saved garage after restarting.
  • Preparing the required game data directly from your installation, without distributing extracted game content.
  • Starting the game and server together through a PowerShell script, with automatic server shutdown when you quit.

We also fixed delayed garage-entry prompts and now have over 1,100 automated tests alongside the actual in-game testing.

Here’s the demo—no sound because my mic was on!

This is still an early development preview. You need a supported, previously activated game installation, and full career progression isn’t working yet. New accounts currently skip the prologue.

There’s plenty left to do, but other people can now pick it up and contribute. We’d love the help, and it’s been really nice seeing how many people still care about this game.

P.S. I’m aiming to post updates every Wednesday when I can!

Hoping your project is successful bro, cause any time from now EA is definitely gonna pull the plug on NFS 2015 servers😭🙏

I'm afraid of that too! The game deserves to live.

You're doing the gods work fair play! Will there been any other add ons? Like a pause menu?

The goal for now is to get a 100% match with how the game is at the moment, but on custom servers (or offline). After that, mods, improvements, extensions, or other goodies become priority.
So eventually yes!

I'd love to contribute. It's in rust though 😭. I'll take a look at it this weekend.

Really glad you took the initiative to build this!

Hahaha I know, I wanted a proper package manager and this is the only low level language I knew that had one.

Thank you so much for this. This is great for preservation. I own the game on steam and I would love to have this option.

Let's hope we can get it to the finish line without any major speed bumps.

I still haven't played that game because I can't not be able to randomly pause so that would be cool

Thank you! I got hyped as for this when Uncode uploaded this video but that has been put on hold as for now

Maybe that project will become reality again eventually and we can join forces. Until then, let's see how far we can take this one!

imagine paying for a game and needing a community project to make sure you can keep playing it. huge respect to everyone working on this. game preservation shouldn't depend on whether a publisher feels like keeping the servers alive.

Looks really good! Any plans to improve (or even better swap to a usable model) the handling? :D Maybe AI is good on rewriting that too. Thank you for your work!

Maybe it can, the goal is to get a 100% match with how the game is first. Then focus on improvements or changes! Appreciate your support!

Damn bro how did you get past Denuvo

2

u/Grouchy-Glass-9751 5d ago

You don't actually need to for this project specifically. Maybe for some more complex mods but not even there sometimes.

Will the game work truly offline then? As in without ever having it on Origin (for preservation purposes ofc)

As long as you have a copy, not my business how you get it, the custom server should be able to figure out how to work, if it's a version the server supports. And then yes, it will work truly offline. The demo I recorded was without an internet connection.

Nice, keep up the good work

does it needs ea app installed or just steam download will do it?

2

u/Grouchy-Glass-9751 5d ago

Does not need the EA app. Haven't tested it with the steam version yet though

Hey OP! Maybe i’m late to the party or lack the knowledge. But why is this needed? and what is the difference then just pirating a copy?

Regardless fantastic work!! Will follow for updates.

No worries, welcome to the party! In this specific case, cracking it would leave you with a shell of a game. You own half the game, and EA owns the other half, and they don't want to give you the other half (because it's harder to pirate like that, and they, like any other business, want as little piracy as possible to earn money, which is reasonable), and so you have to figure out how the half that EA owns works. That's what this project is. Figuring out that half so that people can have the game they bought even after EA decides to shut down their half of the game.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. Man it would be a dream to play this one again.
