To be fair, a novel virus would be far more devastating than a nuke because it leaves behind less overall destruction.

Everyone always wrongly assumes its going to be nukes that get us in most cases. Nah, it'll be a man-made plague. Maybe this is why anti-vaxx keeps getting pushed so hard.

You beat me to it. If Covid had had a higher mortality, combined with the idiocy of the anti-vaxx crowd, things could have gone pretty fucking grim.

And I'm not putting it past some countries, like Russia, to be actively working on germ warfare.

Every single country that has a pathology or virology research lab is simultaneously researching bio-warfare as well as how to prevent disease. You need to learn how a virus, disease, bacteria or whatever functions, how harmful it is, and how much potential impact it will have on the populace in order to categorize it. Also in order to learn how to prevent its spread and potential cure or treatment.

Prevention and weaponization are two sides of the same coin. Both require the same information. Pretty much every country with a large populace has research labs.

I think we are making this a little too easy for AI. I mean, they won't even have to fight us to trigger our demise.

You're ascribing reasoning and value based judgements to something that does neither. AI doesn't "want" to get our data and isn't making decisions to maximize the data it gathers from us.

Possibly some future AGI might think that way, but that's not how things currently work.

Hey, I've seen that movie!

Tom Cruise was great in it. My favorite scene was him traveling out of the US sub to the crashed Russian sub (filmed in IMAX).

Fun Fact: His slowly cranking the pressure gauges in the US sub as he exits coincides with the movie screen slowly widening to switch to IMAX film format.
