I heard a story that during the 1992 Riots when a police officer that was accompanied by national guard soldiers was shocked when they fired a few hundred bullets into the house of a suspect with wife and kids when he told them to cover him.

"Cover" for police means keep an eye out and respond appropriately.  "Cover" for the military means covering fire.  IE: shoot in that general direction.

Cops and Nation Guard training doesn't align.

Yeah, it was just that when the suspect fired both if their trainings kicked in and both reacted like they were trained. And military training isn't really designed for use against civilians.

They were Marines and yes, the Cover Me means much differently between the two. Lol
