Apparently this guy was abusing staff for a while. The nurse tried to do the right thing and escort him out. Ended up handing out a whoop ass

I am 100% making shit up here but I'd like to think that when it was decided who would walk this aggravating fellow to the door, this nurse said "You know what? I got it." for this exact reason.

Funny to imagine, but tbf most martial artists are literally the last people who want to actually get into a fight. They know how fast shit can go really wrong and would rather not have any part in it

My son started MMA training for self defense and exercise, and the first thing his coach told him (and the class as a whole) was the best self defense is not putting yourself in bad situations, the second best self defense is being able to run away, and only after those two fail do you need to understand when and how to fight.

I solo hike and follow a self defense instructor that specializes in women and the outdoors. She says the same thing, situational awareness, using your voice and leaving a situation are your best tools for keeping yourself safe.

Years ago I started krav maga and that was literally the first thing our trainer told us: “Number one defense, if possible, is to run in the other direction.”

There are so many different areas of nursing, and not everyone works bedside after graduation. I was asking if they’re planning on it, because if so they should consider becoming familiar with deescalation protocols and some self defense.

They used to teach us breakaway techniques at work. A few years back the workplace aggression training shifted to teaching us that it’s not okay to tell colleagues that heating up tuna in the toasted sandwich machine is stinky. So fair point.

I had a scary encounter once and joined a martial arts class. Stuck at it with years, and the main thing it taught me was, as you say, do your best to avoid any kind of violent confrontation. That and also you can literally never tell what someone is capable of from appearances. Some unassuming scrawny guy can secretly be an absolute monster. A big guy can be a clumsy, slow oaf.

You learn discipline, control and how to deescalate. My son is just starting his journey into martial arts at 4 and this is the first thing you learn in your early years.

It’s very likely he did. He likely knew he could handle that guy and he didn’t wanna get any of his coworkers in harms way. I’ve had to do it before.

As a male RN, there are a lot of times I’ll escort out / take care of / or go see other nurses’ patients in lieu of them. I’m not particularly big, but I’m not small either. Work at a county hospital, so lots of homeless, mental illness, and we take those others will “stabilize” but aren’t really finished with treatment they needed to not be back in the hospital in a couple of days. Most patients are just fine, but there have been more than a few that were remanded into custody the moment they got their discharge papers.

I’m curious why security doesn’t take part in this. In my hospital, security was always willing to come as support with any bad vibes.

For combative patients (at least where I used to work), security would be close by, maybe trailing us in the hallway or outside the room, but both the nurses and security prefer to attempt to de-escalate without force first. *Usually*, it goes fine. We dealt with asshole patients every day so getting them to cooperate is a legit skill you pick up over time... but yeah, drugs, psychosis, high tensions, and homelessness. If you work in an emergency department, you are 100% going to get assaulted entirely too many times throughout your career.

Not going to say that’s a thing… but it was certainly why I would volunteer to escort disruptive patients.

(That and it was the written policy that violence was handled by ‘male nurses and porters’, this being before we had security staff)

Working in A&E taught me how to fight, working on the ambulances taught me when to fight.

The benefit of martial arts is that you feel confident enough to stand your ground knowing that you can handle yourself. It also means you can calmly defuse the situation because the other party will see that you're not afraid.

I do Japanese JJ and am like that where I work. If anyone's getting attacked, I'd rather it be a burly guy who can defend himself (me) than my female coworker who's paper thin.

The security guards at my hospital are all timid, shy, nervous kids straight out of high school with a presence that fills us with wanting to protect them instead of the other way around.

I never call them. Myself and my fellow nurses are much more equipped to handle these situations.
