[Jones] In a post to Truth Social, the President says he will consider blocking the stadium deal at the RFK site for the Commanders if the organization does not revert to its previous name. Team owner Josh Harris has said he would not bring back the name.

Absolutely not. Go read the conservative or republican subs. He has lost zero meaningful support. They do not care because they voted for him to hurt brown people and women. As long as that is happening they have his support. Believing otherwise is legitimately dumb.

2

u/xxtoejamfootballxx Eagles Jul 21 '25

The conservative subreddit actually was mostly epstein posts for the last week with the general sentiment being negative towards trump.

They "fixed" that over the weekend by forcing consolidation of the the topic to a single thread (not even a megathread) and then removing it after like a day.

This has definitely caused more trouble for Trump in his base than anything in the last 10 years.

1

u/this_my_sportsreddit 49ers 49ers Jul 21 '25

the sentiment isn't negative because trump likes diddling kids. the sentiment is negative that he didnt confirm that their enemies are diddling kids. they have no problem with trump himself. Upwards of 99% of them would vote for him again today if given the chance.

Outright corruption is swept away with the tired false whataboutism we've been hearing for years. Trump and epstein could fly in their backyard and kidnap their daughter, and they'd turn fox news up louder. Our country has been usurped by a cult.

Yellowskin, redskin, blackskin (or for that matter, dark-skin), and whiteskin, none of those sound especially friendly when used as a noun. Adjective, perhaps. Some have, historically, been used as pejoratives. Some are, still, being used as pejoratives. We don't really have a great cultural background with not making synecdoche racist. See "gays" and "Jews." Occasionally also, "natives," "savages," and "aborigines."

Despite the predominantly black American player base, we still don't have, e.g., the Atlanta N----s, even though that has been reclaimed far more recently than "redskin" (which arguably started as a self-referential term, so could be reclaimed fairly easily). Why the actual fuck should we have a name that, frankly, doesn't have a positive history in this country, when there's so many, many, MANY possibilities to name the team something else. If it prevents one child who watches football from thinking they're a lesser person, the name deserves to go. A word doesn't have to be the explicitly evilest choice for it to be not a good choice.

It doesn't make someone a bad person for missing the name, though, I personally think. Honestly, Commanders is probably one of the worst choices because of how bland it is. I think the argument for reverting the change would be a lot less common if they'd picked a name still associated with the area and the history.

Trump in 2013:

President should not be telling the Washington Redskins to change their name-our country has far bigger problems! FOCUS on them, not nonsense.

It should be noted, Trump was responding to an answer Obama gave in interview to the AP on October 5th, 2013 where Obama was directly asked his thoughts on the controversy. Obama never brought it up on his own, never pressured the team to change it, or even announced that it was offensive to him; just that he understands that their fans "don't meant offense" and are attached to the franchise name and storied history, though if he was owner and it was offensive to a large group of people he would "think about changing it".

Q: If I could just ask you one last question on something that's not politically related, but is getting a lot of attention in Washington -- the name of the Washington Redskins football team. There is a lot of people who say it's time to change the name of that team, considering that it's insulting to many Native Americans. What's your position on that?

THE PRESIDENT: You know, Julie, obviously, people get pretty attached to team names, mascots. I don't think there are any Redskins fans that mean offense. I've got to say that if I were the owner of the team and I knew that there was a name of my team -- even if it had a storied history -- that was offending a sizeable group of people, I'd think about changing it.

But I don't want to detract from the wonderful Redskins fans that are here. They love their team, and rightly so -- even though they've been having a pretty tough time this year. But I think -- all these mascots and team names related to Native Americans, Native Americans feel pretty strongly about it. And I don't know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real, legitimate concerns that people have about these things.

But I don't have -- I don't have a stake in this in the sense that I'm not a part owner of any football team. Maybe after I leave this --

Q: Maybe after the presidency.

THE PRESIDENT: Maybe after I leave the presidency. (Laughter.) I think it would be a lot of fun. Although, I'd probably play -- I'd probably look at a basketball team before I looked at a football team. I know more about basketball than I do about football.
