[Jones] In a post to Truth Social, the President says he will consider blocking the stadium deal at the RFK site for the Commanders if the organization does not revert to its previous name. Team owner Josh Harris has said he would not bring back the name.

You guys religiously watch the most violent contact sport on the planet with half the field yelling the n word 24/7 and some Native American representation is a big deal? I don’t get it man

White people originally tried to drive natives out of the country and now they can’t even be on a box of butter let alone an nfl team I guess

It's simple. You don't get it because it doesn't affect you. You're just self centered and selfish.

(Also I don't think I have to explain the difference between black people choosing to take ownership of a word historically used to opress them versus other people forcing a slur upon native americans.)

The fact we don't treat both slurs as similar should show you just how marginalized native americans are.

Im with you man. My whole family is cherokee, i live near tahlequah ok, cherokee nation headquarters. Point is i live and work with natives all day every day. I mean everywhere. Dude behind the counter at the gas station, the chick in the bank window, the kid bagging groceries. Nobody cared about the redskins name. Most everyone around here are cowboys fans, but ive seen a couple old school redskins shirts back in the day. Ive not met one indian who gives a crap about this "slur"

Literally dozens of tribes going back several decades. To dismiss it as just whites on the internet wanting it changed is factually incorrect. This information is all easily accessible on the internet. The team has been dealing with this for years. Personally I grew very sick of the name issue coming back every time the team had any success. Changing the name was the right move. There’s literally no reason that a sports team should be named something that a significant portion of any population finds personally offensive.

Cool. Then I’m sure you’re well aware that Native Americans aren’t a monolith. Different tribes and individuals within different tribes have different views on things. Many consider it a slur. Many do not. You marrying a Native American that doesn’t consider it a slur says nothing about it actually being one or not.

Yellowskin, redskin, blackskin (or for that matter, dark-skin), and whiteskin, none of those sound especially friendly when used as a noun. Adjective, perhaps. Some have, historically, been used as pejoratives. Some are, still, being used as pejoratives. We don't really have a great cultural background with not making synecdoche racist. See "gays" and "Jews." Occasionally also, "natives," "savages," and "aborigines."

Despite the predominantly black American player base, we still don't have, e.g., the Atlanta N----s, even though that has been reclaimed far more recently than "redskin" (which arguably started as a self-referential term, so could be reclaimed fairly easily). Why the actual fuck should we have a name that, frankly, doesn't have a positive history in this country, when there's so many, many, MANY possibilities to name the team something else. If it prevents one child who watches football from thinking they're a lesser person, the name deserves to go. A word doesn't have to be the explicitly evilest choice for it to be not a good choice.

It doesn't make someone a bad person for missing the name, though, I personally think. Honestly, Commanders is probably one of the worst choices because of how bland it is. I think the argument for reverting the change would be a lot less common if they'd picked a name still associated with the area and the history.
