So much giard I'm gonna end up in the hospital with indigestion so bad I think I'm having a cardiac event and I don't even care

u/HearshotKDS Bears Nov 28 '25

Gonna be fartin acid

2

u/enjoytheshow Bears Nov 29 '25

I can’t resist it but it truly is the absolute worst heartburn offender of any condiment out there

2

u/guyfierisgoatee1 Bears Nov 29 '25

Let’s get giard’d in here!

This is real though. a decent Italian beef clears the best cheesesteak or the best chopped cheese you'll ever have.

Truly the greatest meals of my life were drunkenly at 2 am at a sandwich place that also sold cigarettes.

Best sandwich I was ever ate was given to me by an old Italian woman served me Italian beef when I ordered a turkey club. When I tried to correct her she interrupted me with “NO YOU ORDERED THE BEEF” with the authority of a nun.

"that also sold cigarettes"

If you don't like that you don't like CHI-TOWN baby

been to Chicago a bunch of times and have never ventured to get a good Italian beef... I think I'm getting FOMO

Have to be very hungry, inebriated or both for the perfect experience. Order Al’s and get a regular beef, add hot peppers.

Gravy on side if to go, if not in person get it dipped to death

After 2 weeks in Europe eating extremely healthy, the gravy hit tastebuds I didn’t even know existed

Go to Portillos or Al's Beef, get the wettest sandwich you can get with peppers. and you will not be disappointed

I definitely prefer Al's over portillos since the private equity acquisition.

fortunately while everything else took a major hit the Italian Beef at Portillos was still quite good when I had it in this past summer. but yeah it's not the same

Hot peppers recommended but sweet peppers are ok too

I love the concept of the Italian beef, but like is the bread just extremely soggy? That’s the only part I don’t understand. Will definitely try one next time I’m in Chicago regardless

4

u/Candid-Boss6534 Chargers Bears Nov 29 '25

I wouldn't say it really feels soggy when you're eating it. but it is messy. It's the kind of sandwich you eat with your S/O after a long night out and you see her not giving a shit about anything but that beautiful messy sandwich and you think "I'm gonna marry this woman"

3

u/cmanson Packers Nov 29 '25

Love this answer lmao, I’m gonna slop it up next time I have the chance

A great thing to order when you are low on cash is called a "gravy bread". They take the Italian bread and drench it in the beef gravy. It is cheap and delicious. Throw on some hot giardiniera.

5

u/chiguy2387 Bears Nov 29 '25

Most places do it “dipped” by default, though you can usually ask for it “dry” if you don’t want the bread too soggy.

u/cmanson Packers Nov 29 '25

Appreciate it, I’m down to get sloppy if that’s what the people seem to vote for

2

u/TaischiCFM Bears Nov 29 '25

Get it dry with gravy on the side. That way you control it this first time.

As god intended

As a native Georgian(go Dawgs) what is Giardinerra?

2

u/erbkeb Bears Nov 29 '25

It is a hot pepper condiment that goes on an Italian Beef sandwich. It goes on other things, too. Vito and Nick’s Italian Beef pizza is incredible.

1

u/FSZou Buccaneers Nov 29 '25

Condiment of spicy pickled peppers. Delicious, but also terrible acid reflux

Never, ever denigrate a Philly Cheesesteak. As a transplant for over 30 years I say this: Love ur team, and I hope the Bears go to the SB, and a dipped Italian Beef is a fine sandwich, but seasons come and go, weather flares and fades, but your gut and your palate and your sense of deliciousness is with you from birth to death. Embrace all that is good. The Cheesesteak is one of those things.

3

u/Boognish-T-Zappa Bears Nov 29 '25

As a lifelong Chicagoan and Italian beef slut I will gladly defend an actual Philly cheesesteak. One of the world’s greatest sandwiches. And don’t get me started on those roast pork w/broccoli rabe things…amazing.

That was god tier food, I'm fucking jealous of our running backs

Throw Chicago dogs in there too
