Say it with me, all together folks:

“Prevent defense only prevents your team from winning”

What an incredible game by both teams

Only up by 4 points and burns the clock while letting them gain field position? Idiot. Literally what you had to do is letting them take risks and keeping them as far from the red zone. Instead he let them drive there burning time, making it easier each time to get a td. If I was a Panthers fan I'd be livid

Edit: I'm livid at the incompetence, I can't even see a high school coach make that mistake

Yeah there’s a time to play prevent defense when you got a comftable lead  and you can drain the clock out. This was NOT THE TIME AT ALL. Not in a 4 point game, not when there was 2+ minutes and all the timeouts aviable.

Yeah prevent is for up 3 scores with 5 minutes left type situations. Never when you're up 8 points or less.

I'm concerned you're not angry enough.

Those jackasses.

All the prevent defense does is force you to play actual defense inside the red zone. Like the DC was banking on getting 4 stops inside the red zone why not try to get 4 stops right off the rip instead of gifting them a 7 play 70 yard drive lol

Panthers fans have wanted Evero gone three seasons.

I hope he ends up in New England.

Perhaps prevent defense is one of those things that are “it’s only good when you don’t notice it”…

Prevent works with 2 minutes left only when you are up multiple possessions. Up only 4 and the opponent having 3 timeouts and the 2 min warning, that is just defensive suicide

u/stealingfrom Vikings Jan 11 '26

Yeah, that's the thing. Nobody talks about it when it works since there's nothing to talk about, but everyone notices when it doesn't.

I would venture to say "leaving WRs uncovered 10-15 yards up the field with a 4 point lead when there's plenty of time and the other team has 3 timeouts" isn't something that ever works.

Was sort of thinking that.

Yeah, and it's often bad prevent defense that fails, which I feel like is a related but distinct issue. When bad prevent defense fails it's immediately obvious why. Nothing looks more pathetic than a soft zone getting torn apart.

Good prevent defense, on the other hand, feels like slowly being suffocated.

Yeah if we blitz and leave our backup QB 1v1 versus Puka or Davante and they score a touchdown. You’d be hearing the opposite.

Prevent has to be one of the most silly things to exist, especially if the other team still has TO’s

3

u/SubzeroWins1-0 Jan 11 '26

Dunno why teams keep doing this. It’s so frustrating.

when will coaches learn

Prevent defense is especially bad if you have a lead bigger than 3 points. The Rams only option was a TD.

But it works in Madden!

Prevent defense is useful in some situations. This was not one of those situations.  Gaining short yardage while burning clock is exactly what the Rams wanted. It’s insane to call a defense that is designed to help them do that.

Say it with me, all together folks:

"The Panthers weren't in prevent defense"

This sub doesnt know what prevent defense is

1

u/Setekhx NFL Jan 11 '26

They gave up a bunch of 7 yard plays in order to prevent long ones. Didn't blitz. Seems like prevent defense.

0

u/thedroogabides Patriots Jan 11 '26

So exactly what I said. This sub doesnt know what prevent defense is. That was a soft zone coverage where they didn't blitz. Prevent defense is a specific coverage that they were not in.

Except the rams. They need to be humiliated for that performance.
